What can I say about this album? Easily in the top 10 of all time, there is no way to pick favorites on this album. Not even one okay track on here. Everything is amazing. When this came out in 94, it was one of the most anticipated albums of all time, taking about two years to finally release. And it dropped with ten songs, no filler, blowing the lid off everybody. Nas wrote the deepest street poetry, touched inner thoughts and demons and still shot his way out his momma's stomach, went to hell for snuffin Jesus. Got the best producers in New York (Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip, Trackmasters, Premier) to turn in some of their best work ever for one of the best albums ever. One of the few albums I can just keep flipping over and over and over to this day. Little known fact: the trumpet solo on the end of "Life's a Bitch" is performed by Nas' father, the accomplished jazz man Olu Dara.

1996 debut album from the camel-faced, b-boning one. Still firmly planted in the Marcy state of mind, this was Jay's closest equivalent to Ready To Die. Includes the hits "Can't Knock the Hustle, Brooklyn's Finest, Dead Presidents II, Feelin It, Aint No Nigga, 22 Two's, Friend or Foe," and others. Double LP version, full pic sleeve.

No-brainer release for the Biggie completist. Just as the title states, this comp hooks you up with 10 of Biggie's most sought-after collabs. You get all the club favorites like "Brooklyn's Finest" with Jay-Z, the Bad Boy Remix of "Only You" with 112 & Mase, "Player's Anthem" with Junior Mafia, and "Real Love" with Mary J Blige, plus the hard beats of "Dead Wrong" with Eminem, "Runnin'" with 2Pac, and "Notorious Thugs" with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Is Brooklyn in the house? Without a doubt. 10 tracks on marbled grey vinyl.

Q-Tip seems like he's on mission to go back in time and choose the other path... the one without fur coats and beats meant for LL Cool J. As one of the most beloved hip-hop ambassadors of our time, he deserves another chance. Thankfully, Tip delivers what we we're hungry for. I'm not ranking it, I'm just saying that it hits the spot. "Won't Trade" is nineties hip-hop reincarnate with its simple dusty loop, soul sample, and Tip delivering snappy monotone lines like he was 18. I've already praised the single "Gettin Up," but what really makes it cool, is the basement-style scratching on the album version (another reason to get the single) that leads directly into "Official," which sounds like a 1999 Slum Village white label. Album-only quirks... what I'm hungry for. Speaking of SV, check the Dilla-produced "Move," the only non-Tip produced cut. And for all those grown-n-sexy, new jazz-loving heads (I see you Neil Nice), Tip delivers half an album of that with collabos with Saadiq, Amanda Diva, Norah Jones, and back from fat camp D'Angelo. And lastly, if you're not convinced, check the closer "Shaka," damned if that doesn't sound like the Midnight moments we used to love. 12 tracks in all.

The marketing team for Q-Tip has definitely done a good job toting the return of the old-Tip. In-stores in record shops (TTL LA!)? MPC on the album cover? Now let's see if the music matches... and it does! We're not talking about pre-Marauders (we have to get over that), but damn if "Gettin Up" doesn't sound as good as anything from Love Movement. It's got the Dilla-inspired beat and even rocks a dusty sample (Black Ivory). These promo-only copies feature the extended version and the extended instrumental.

Bastard Boots keeps the goodness coming with an entry from Greece's Mishkin (of GAMM / Raw Fusion's Palov and Mishkin). Light one up for the beats version of Linval Thompson's "Free Marijuana" backed with a "Livin Trouble," a party-breaks style track featuring snippets of various party igniters. No brainer really, recommended.

Debut album from Lorn on Flylo's Brainfeeder imprint. Lorn has definitely come a long way with Nothing Else. I first heard from the Milwaukee-based producer on the old scratch boards where he would post some of the illest beats to cut to. Fast forward more than half a decade later and the same dude has evolved his sound and is now posting up beats on the highly regarded Brainfeeder label! You can tell that hard-edged dirty break aesthetic is still there, but these are more than just loops to cut to - they're fully realized tracks, arranged to completion with raw emotion. See what I mean on the dramatic beats of "None An Island" and "Greatest Silence" or the melancholy, militant march of "Army Of Fear." Tracks like "Bretagne" and "Glass & Silver" get deep and introspective with the melodies, while "Automation," "Void I" and "Void II," just go hard as f*ck. Also peep the beautiful arrangement of "Cherry Moon." 12 tracks total.

Onur Engin does it again with another batch of tastefully re-edited classics for the modern dancefloor. Volume 9 brings four more freshly flipped favorites to the table, kicking off with a subtle re-work of Lonnie Liston Smith's anthem "Expansions." Here Onur adds a 4/4 low end bump to the track that keeps it moving without losing the integrity of the original. "Marcatau" utilizes a similar technique, but over a slowed down tropical jazz-funk tune for stunning results. On the flip we get into some slow motion jazz fusion vibes with the smooth balearic grooves of "Aquamarine," as well as an obscure alternate version of the Roberta Flack classic "Feel Like Makin Love."

More heat for classy dancefloors from Hot Creations... Volume two of the unstoppable label's Post Summer Sampler series packs three sure-shots tracks. Hot Natured, aka Jamie Jones & Lee Foss, takes the a-side with "Class(1)," a deep, hypnotic, and sexy piece of house music with big bass, killer stabs, and "estranged spoken word vocals." B-side starts with a collabo track from Russ Yallop & Wildkats. "System Crank(2)" is flat-out infectious - the lyrics, chorus, keyboard line, bass... They all come together to create a dependable dancefloor weapon. Alex Arnout also contribute a track, and "One (More)" is an "edgy piece of righteous house." Recommended.

A very welcome reissue of this sought-after Moody edit from Shoes! Shoes' "Bangin' Edit" adds a constant four on the floor bump to Shades Of Jae, making it super effective in rocking down the house. While the original teases for days before finally dropping, this version cuts to the chase so you can go off to that infectious keyboard loop right from the get go. A super useful tool for the house set that won't be leaving the bag anytime soon. Recommended.

Let's get one thing straight - I hate Turntable Lab. They suck. They dig through your crates, pick the hottest shit, order it - and sell it to every fucking geek in Kansas. With that said, I gotta give it up to Bozo Meko, cause this record is the shit. I was probably wearing Spidey Man undies and pissin in my bed when this shit came out, but I gotta review it. Word is that Mark the 45 King did all this edits on here, but I'm not positive. The A side is just "The Bridge Is Over": 3 mixes, who cares. Flip it over for the real. "Brazillian Rhyme," the classic, gets edited and extended, making it one of the top 5 feel-good party songs of all time. I swear by this shit. Next is the classic Take 6 "Spread Love" remixed with those infamous drums. Finally, we get a re-edit of Mandrill's "Fence Walk," a dope cut that gets too wild to mix if you play the original, here walla re-edited for easier mixing. I can't say enough about how essential this record is (sorry no crap about other Bozo releases and how rare they are).

I love ESG but I'll never play that track "UFO" out. Mixtape material maybe, but unless I'm on some Louie Vega in Japan shit that's staying home on the shelves. "Moody" on the other hand, bumps in all the right places, with the bumbumbum bass and traintrack drums perfectly complementing Renee Scroggins' singing style. House party and club DJs will want the excellent re-edit here cause it's extended in 2 key areas: an extra 4 bars in the intro, and the break after "like this!" is drawn out too. As for the B-side by Level 42 "Starchild" I've never heard of it before (somewhere in the distance, ROC yells "it's a classic!"), but they were a jazz-funk group from the early 80s who did the disco/R&B thing, so you know Lloydski and Antonia are already humming it to and from the bathroom. Plays at 45.

Now on colored vinyl (randomly shipped)! Limited press 7" EP with Winehouse covering some two-tone favorites. The slow skank of Sam Cooke's "Cupid" suits her voice best, but I'm feeling the accompaniment on "Hey Little Rich Girl" too. Two more Specials covers - the uptempo "You're Wondering Now" and a skippable version "Monkey Man" - round things out. Plays at 33.

Another batch of super useful edits from Psychemagik! First up is the cosmic rework of Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days." You're probably more familiar with this track that you think you are. It's like a John Hughes' soundtrack cut that never was. Jack Hues, Mr. Wang Chung himself, reached out to Psychemagik after hearing their original take on his track and offered up the them the parts for an official remix. And what you get is a surefire slow burner for the deep moments in your set. On the flip is a bass heavy edit of Bobby McFerrin's "Beauty And The Bass" and there's no BS here. They pack a ton of energy into the track. Limited edition white vinyl.

The Italians Do It Better camp has really been turning up the heat lately. It comes as no surprise that Glass Candy's latest ups the ante. Johnny Jewelhas been one busy bastard what with the Chromatics, making an alternate soundtrack for the movie Drive and continuing to turn out track after track of pure disco gold. He turns up the glitter on "Warm in the Winter" and sets the stage for Ida No to take off in a new direction. Love is most definitely in the air. "Beautiful Object" is more traditional Glass Candy. Slow and funky beat, muted eight note guitar picking and the sexy Ida singing to you.

Fool's Gold celebrates its 4-year anniversary with the release of a super limited-edition (only 2000 worldwide!) set, which includes 4 highly sought after, previously unreleased remixes spread over 2 clear marble yellow LPs with serato control tones on the flip and a pair of exclusive slipmats stamped with the iconic Fool's Gold logo. The Reflex, one of top current editors of funk and soul, has dropped a three part vinyl series on GAMM showcasing his mostly digital-only excursions. This record is part one and features two super-clean reworks of The Jacksons 5's "ABC" and James Brown's "I Feel Good." Worth it alone for that sax breakdown on "I Feel Good," this is a no-brainer for the funk DJs. Recommended

You can always count on Onur Engin for tasteful quality edits, and the 6th volume of his edit series brings just that. The standout here is an exceptional rework of Bobbi Humphrey's "Harlem River Drive," on which he respectfully re-arranges, loops and bumps up the Mizell production for extended pleasure on the floor or in the headphones. Straight up cruise control material right here! And while we're on cruise control, check the super smooth groove of Al Johnson & Jean Carne's "I'm Back For More," and Gwen McCrae's "Let's Straighten It Out," both given Onur Engin's loving touch. Recommended.

It's been a good past couple years for NYC's Travis Stewart aka Machinedrum. The Brooklyn-based producer has seen lots of praise for his Sepalcure project with Praveen and his solo work on Planet Mu, and now here on LuckyMe, Machinedrum gives us more of an experimental dance vibe for SXLND. The slow churning dark ambient piece "Take Good Care" sets a misleading tone, since the title track takes it out of the black depths with an upbeat bass hybrid to rock floors. Check for hints of Sepalcure coming through on "No Respect" and the retro-future house vibe of "Van Vogue and "DDD." Forward at its best.

Debut full length from Jeremiah Jae on Flylo's Brainfeeder imprint. According to Brainfeeder, Raw Money Raps is "more than just an album, this is an all-encompassing Pynchonian, Tumblr-feeding, social networked art-rap fever dream." This cannot be more true as Jeremiah Jae represents the next generation of net-savvy MC/producer, one that combines the worlds of analog and digital, IRL and URL. This is underground rap in 2012, where flow is abstracted, chopped, screwed, then abstracted some more. Beats are anything goes - former production taboos (such as grainy digital time stretches) are embraced and flipped, so long as it makes your head nod. It's really a revelation of how indie rap has evolved with the introduction of affordable production tools and internet democratization run-rampant in a post-post hip-hop society. Check "Money And Food," "Greetings," "Money," "Rover," and "Hercules Versus The Commune" for a taste of this future now. From label boss Flying Lotus, "I think it’s safe to say Jeremiah Jae is one of my favorite artists of his generation. For years now I’ve been a witness to the incredible progression of his craft. Double LP pressing of Odd Future's latest album for Record Store Day 2012. Domo, Tyler, Hodgy, Left, Syd and the rest of the Wolf Gang have had the internets buzzing for a minute now, and with The Odd Future Tape Volume 2, the LA crew solidifies their place in the pantheon of irreverent, no-fuck-giving rap groups. The album delivers a great overview of what Golf Wang is all about - the majority of tracks being held down by clever, youthful raps, balanced out by a couple smooth joints featuring resident singer Frank Ocean. Also check the 10+ minute posse cut closer "Oldie" that features the whole crew (including Earl Sweatshirt) doing what they do best. 18 tracks over two LPs with bonus CD version included. Comes in 2 different covers, shipped randomly.

On their 2nd LP, the juvenile hell crew went on a fat lady make-over and came out the Queensbridge Murderers. What a little seasoning can add. A production takeover as Havoc and Q-Tip combine the rough and smooth tracks to form the Queensbridge defense. Rougher than rough on "Shook Ones pt2" and "Eye For an Eye." Smoother than smooth on "Drink Away the Pain" and "Give Up the Goods." 3 solid collaborations: Dream Team of Nas, Raekwon, and Mobb on "Eye," Q-Tip dropping the flyest verse about rocking labels on "Drink," and the unrealized potential of Big Noyd on "Give Up the Goods." Also includes: the singles "Survival of the Fittest and Temperature Rising," b-side mixtape track "Right Back at You, Up North Trip, Trife Life, Q.U. Hectic, Cradle to the Grave, and Party Over." Mobb Deep spelled backwards is Peed B-bom. Coincidence or conspiracy?

There's a lot of hubbub in the rap cognoscenti around this new release from Daniel Dumile, man of a thousand (well, at least 5) names. He's hardly been out of sight since 1999's Operation Doomsday, but a new release under the name that seems nearest to his heart is something special. This album is organized around the food "concept," but as always the song titles are simply jumping-off points for Doom's uninhibited imagination. Over his own Lite FM-inspired beats ("Hoe Cakes" loops Anita Baker), Doom muses over topics close to home (girls, weed, friends), always with an eye to absurd and apt detail that places him in the company of the greatest poets. Indeed, in a just world, Dumile would be a poet laureate, officially recognized for his genius-level skill. Take a look at how he treats wack rappers, a grade school-level subject worn to threadbare tatters by a generation of MCs. Doom finds seemingly endless ways to cover it ("MCs is crabs in a barrel pass the Old Bay," "Out of work jerks since they shut down Chippendale's"), lacing almost every line with multiple internal rhymes that place the lyrics halfway between poetry and tongue-twisters ("If I had a dime for every rhymer that bust guns / I'd have a cool mil for my sons in trust funds"). And the true virtuoso makes the very difficult look easy: songs are filled with nonchalant phrases that stick in your skull ("frown like the first time you taste couscous")- and just try to repeat some of those palate-mangling syllables. By today's standards (hey Nas), the album is short; barely cracking 45 minutes. Two of the songs were previously released (the Stones Throw fan club 45 "One Beer" and the Molemen-produced gem "Kon Queso," called "Yee Haw" when it was an indy 12-inch single), and the middle 5 minutes of the CD are taken up by a funny and beautifully absurd collage of found sound. Grounds for complaints, perhaps, but I'm not left wanting more. The collabos are done tastefully and without fanfare, with lab hero Count Bass D's "Potholderz" the standout. Also check quick rotation favorites "Guinnessez, Kon Karne" and "Deep Fried Frenz." A necessary album for the true school head; MM..Food is perhaps a bit older and more cynical, but just as clever and exciting.

Instrumental album from the Beasties. I love the Beasties - grew up banging out to their raps - and now I'm banging to just the beats! This album concentrates on a return to live instruments and a nice mix of fresh originals. The sound is like a continuation of the In Sound From Way Out! album, and packs 'nuff funky, buttery breaks perfect for summertime escapades and chillin'. Check the uptempo "14th St. Break," the funky bass of "The Electric Worm," "Melee," the stomping rock/funk track "The Cousin Of Death," and "Kangaroo Rat." Granted, it's not as "Beastie" as they were when they were in their hip hop prime, but then again, they're not "Boys" anymore either. Great Monty Python style cover art. 12 tracks, 45 minutes.

The original 1994 clear vinyl pressing of this record is one of the holy grails of hip-hop digging. While the original was a scarce A-list DJ promo, several rounds of well-executed bootlegs made their way onto the market. The originals were then elevated to mythical status verified by only the highest of hip-hop nerdus (hmm.. lemmie check the etching). Ha-ha... over a decade later, I am just happy to have this black vinyl repress. Aside from the hype, this is De La at their fun-loving, collaborating prime, best exemplified by cult-classics "Sh.Fe.Mc's" with A Tribe Called Quest (... I hope your cells get sickles!) and "Pattie Dooke" featuring Guru. You also get Buhloone standouts "I Am I Be," its cousin "I Be Blowin," and "In The Woods." "Stix & Stonz" featuring The Fearless Four, GM Caz, and Prince Whipper Whipper was a collabo that was probably saved from the cutting room floor (but could have easily been left there too).

DJ Still Life puts Aaliyah's "Try Again" over a tough digital cumbia track, and this 7" is guaranteed to bring both r&b and tropical bass fans to the dancefloor. Instrumental included, which in itself is a strong enough reason to pick this Bstrd Roots gem up. Recommended.

Headed by the three man crew of Ayres, Eleven & Cosmo Baker, the Rub guys are back with an even bigger cast of friends and a wider range of remixes for the part two of their idea of a remix album. The first volume was one of our best selling cds of the last year (still going strong), so you guys should already know the deal with this. While there's a healthy amount of pure party material here, the selection goes well beyond the drunken kingdom of knee-jerk mashup, featuring original remixes (check Paul Nice's work on "Devil's Pie"), stuff that won't necessarily work in the club but sounds great (Dead Prez over "Cadillac On 22s"!), strange experimentation, etc. Includes remixes by the above mentioned plus A-Trak, Diplo, Low Budget, Mark Ronson, Nick Catchdubs, Max Glazer, DJ Platurn, Crooked, and Brendan Bring Em. 27 tracks, recommended.

From the late 80's into the early 90's Soul Underground was the go to bible for the massive UK underground. Much like URB, The Source, and Ego Trip in the states, Soul Underground had a stronghold across the water on the then early stages of UK Hip Hop and already established Rave scene that still is as dominant a scene as ever. Though the magazine ran for four years, the impact it had for UK Djs, record nerds, and club-goers was heavy. With interviews of key players, coverage of a wide range of styles, and the VERY important DJ lists the influence of the magazine quickly led to a New York based operation that further excelled their cultural awareness to international status. Unfortunately, shortly after their NY base was planted, the magazine shut down in 1991. Catch The Beat compiles the best moments from the 38 issue run of Soul Underground, which leaves us wanting more. If you are a fan of Ego Trip's The Book of Rap lists, Wax Poetics, Djhistory.com, and B&W zines this is for you.

This is a true story: Back at Lab II, we had a undersized pit of an office. Uno day, we had a water leak in our ceiling. The crud-filled water soaked our vinyl gems. Flying Lotus finally drops his much anticipated and heavily hyped third album on Warp! Cosmogramma raises the bar to outerspace heights and goes above and beyond all expectations from the prolific LA producer with mind expanding cosmic jazz melodies, futuristic beats and bleeps from beyond, and totally organic yet unpredictable arrangements that prove why Flylo is at the top of the class for the new school sound. If Los Angeles was the mission statement, Cosmogramma is the magnum opus - a self-described "space opera" that treats the ears to new possibilites in the sonic realm featuring collaborations with relative Ravi Coltrane, harpist Rebekah Raff, bass virtuoso Thundercat, string arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and vocals from Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Laura Darlington. There is also an undeniable spiritual jazz vibe soaked into the futuristic beat tapestries reminiscent of his aunt Alice Coltrane. This is something that needs to be heard in its entirety for the full effect but here are some picks: Check the opener "Clock Catcher" that sets the mood, "Pickled," the heavy head nod of "Zodiac Shit" and "Recoiled," the abstract funk of "Computer Face / Pure Being," the brilliant "And The World Laughs With You" ft. LA's Flying Lotus is being setup as the next Madlib-Diplo-DJ Shadow-type producer cash cow. The hype is well-warranted in my opinion, as Flying Lotus well represents the new movement of LA producers, birthed from Dilla drum patterns, weird jazz records, accidental keystrokes, and imperfect facets. His music sounds like the result of humans finally mastering drum machines and sequencing programs to create organic music. Check the drums on "Breathe," the kicks and hand claps are liberated from standard beat measures. "Camel" creates movement we're not used to in a beat track; you can tell there's something else going on here. "Comet Course" shows the complete package in an uptempo flurry stew. "GNG BNG" is so fresh sounding, I can just picture Gaslamp playing this and doing his patented possessed behind-the-decks dance. In a play of depth, Flylo enlists several vocalist for the last third of the album including songstress Dolly on "RobertaFlack" and Gaslamp's partner Gonja Sufi on "Testament." 17 tracks overall, it lives up to the hype. Recommended.

If you're any sort of Animal Collective fan you've probably already added this baby to your cart. Their first real noise as a group since 2009's much lauded Merriweather Post Pavilion and it seems to be that it was worth the wait. The tracks play like two sides of the same coin. "Honeycomb" brings the positive, upbeat vibes that my upstairs neighbors seem intent on trying to recreate on a daily basis. The vocals are all super chatty but the pulsing cacophony the makes the bed of the track does a more than stellar job of keeping up. On the flip "Gotham" is like the cough syrup cousin, where everything is stretched out as far as it can go. Super deluxe marbled paper sleeve. Don't sleep.
