Serato Pressings Artist Series - Shepard Fairey 2LP PRE-ORDER
  • Serato Pressings
  • $69.99

PRE-ORDER NOTE: The Obey Serato Pressing will ship in 2-4 weeks.

 Limit 2 Per Customer.

Easily the most anticipated release in Serato's Artist Series to date. They went big on this one and got Shepard Fairey, the man behind the OBEY movement. Fairey went from making from a simple sticker ("Andre The Giant Has A Posse") to creating a worldwide phenomenon with the OBEY campaign, and changed the way people see the urban landscape through street art. For his Serato pressing (the third in the Artist Series), Fairey has created 4 orignal pieces that adorn each side of the double LP set. No music on this one, just the Serato control tone on each side. Limited to 2000 pieces, recommended.

Red Astaire returns to the label that made him famous. When the needle drops, you'll be warped back to early 2000. Two b-boy style, bouncy breakbeat tracks inhabit the A-side while the B-side conceals two signature Red mashes. Black Moon's "How Many Emcees" gets an age-approriate smokey beats rework (Walt would nod in approval), and Bob gets a modern dub seaweed wrap. Loving the red vinyl pressing too, recommended.

  • Flying Lotus
1983 Special Edition (Colored Vinyl) LP
  • Plug Research
  • $26.00

Here's where it started, the debut album from Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus, back in print on splatter grey vinyl! Before blowing up on Warp or running his Brainfeeder label, we already had a feeling that Flylo was destined for big tings. Check our original review from 2006: Out here in LA, this Flying Lotus guy has been receiving a lot of hand to hand, word of mouth type hype. I don't even keep up with this kind of stuff, but his name has been in the right conversations for a minute. You know something's got to be pretty good when people are saying "Stones Throw intern" and "you need to check this out" in the same breath. His sound basically fits in with the whole Los Angeles underground future soul thing (SIC, Sa-Ra, Dilla, PPP, Ubiquity sound, etc), but taking it even more into the cosmic mind feckery through instrumentals like "1983." I like where this is going; no half stepping on the outer space ish with this guy. Strap in, float around, talk to Hal, cause there's 10 tracks of this stuff. "Pet Monster Shotglass" is one of my favorites, if nothing else for onomatopoeia of it (sounds like a drunken little buddy from the muppets). Aside from the space shit, Brazilian influence pops up more than once, sometimes only in name, like "Orbit Brazil," and later in style with "Unexpected Delight" featuring Laura Darlington on some very pretty vocals. This is one of those records that can kind of be whatever you want it to; pay attention and get lost in the subtle complexity of his wrap around sound (z o n e o u t), or just leave it on in the back and get some work done. Includes a Daedelus remix of "1983," and I guess I should mention that he descends from the Coltrane line. Recommended.

Another meeting of the minds on wax. Burial and Four Tet are two names that need no introduction. Both have been at the top of their game for awhile now, and when they put their heads together, you can bet the result is gonna be something brilliant. "Nova" is their third collab 12" ("Moth/Wolf Cub" came before, and the first was with Thom Yorke) and once again the duo exceed expectations with a track that is melodic, ethereal, driving, and deep, all at once. Does this complete the trilogy? Only time will tell. Limited copies, pressed on one sided vinyl. Recommended.

DJ Spinna Vs. P&P Records 2LP / CD
  • Five Day Weekend
  • $20.00

It's a match made in disco heaven. P&P Records is synonymous with the original disco sound (of Harlem to be exact), and who better to dig through the archives and compile and mix the best jams from their massive catalog? The one and only DJ Spinna! Ya'll should be familiar with Spinna's undeniable talent as a selector behind the decks, and this release is even more proof of the skills. For the mix version, Spinna runs through 21 P&P joints - from soulful groovers, uptempo movers, to disco breaks galore - all mixed and cut up to perfection. Seriously, this is how you do a disco mix people! Contains tracks from Cloud One, Ahzz, Karisma, Little Scotty, Queen Yahna, Louise Murray, Mary Clark, Marta Acuna, Golden Flamingo Orchestra, and many more. The double LP version contains 8 unmixed, full length versions of tracks from the mix that also happen to be some of the rarest P&P cuts from the catalog (check the insane unheard funk of the Michael Campbell and High Voltage joints, or the smooth chillout grooves of Cloud One). And if that wasn't enough, it's pressed up on bright pink vinyl! Disco heads will not want to miss this, recommended.

Pet Sounds In The Key Of Dee LP
  • $21.00

This isn't really a traditional "mash up" album (sorry if you were hoping for another Grey Album), rather, Bullion took snippets of songs from the Beach Boys' classic Pet Sounds and chopped them up with snippets from J. Dilla's catalog to create a new school beats masterpiece (seriously). Check the samples if you don't believe me - I'm partial to "Don't Talk," "You Still Believe In Dee," and "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times," but the whole album is damn solid. Fans of The Beach Boys, Dilla or both definitely need to take a listen to this. 13 tracks, plays at 33. Recommended.

Here it is, M.I.A.'s highly anticipated 3rd album /\/\/\Y/\ on double 180g vinyl and 4 bonus tracks! As with her previous albums Arular and Kala, /\/\/\Y/\ aims to push boundaries, push buttons and blend genres (this time exploring territories like rock and dubstep). You've probably heard the mixed reviews, but here's the sound samples so you can decide for yourself: the single "XXXO," "Steppin Up," "Teqkilla," "Lovalot," "Born Free," "Tell Me Why," Space," "Internet,"Illygirl,""Believer," "Caps Lock." 16 tracks total, recommended.

Instrumental version of Elzhi's Illmatic tribute with all the beats replayed LIVE by Detroit's Will Sessions! Not taking anything away from Elzhi's raps (which are super on-point), but Will Sessions' renditions of these classic beats by Primo, Large Pro, Pete Rock and Q-Tip are just insane and pretty much make the album. The Motor City band has been rocking the live funk for years now (the players are affiliated with Detroit's infamous Funk Night party and record label and have played with everyone from Mayer Hawthorne, Slum village, Black Milk, Phat Kat, etc) and are more than well equipped to rock the funk. On first listen you might even think they are the regular instrumentals, but then the the beat will get extended or flipped and you're like "damn, this is all live!?". DJ Premier himself was even very impressed (see video below)! 10 tracks including "Detroit State of Mind," "Genesis," "One Love," "It Ain't Hard To Tell," "Halftime," etc. plus free download card. When I was in high school, I thought I was some sort of stoned philosopher. Talking about reptilian minds and shit, I used this album as my portal to higher consciousness and advanced stonerism. I worshipped the fuck out of this record, so much so that I camped out by the Twin's tour bus, because my friend Stang made me miss his first appearance in DC. Anyway, usually whenever I travel back to that phase, most things make me want to vomit. Floor scrubbing jeans, check. Phillies blunts shirts, check. H-cut ecstasy, check. Rocking clothes with 8 Balls on em, check. Dirty rave boderline-hippy chicks, check. BUT, the thing about this album is that I still worship it. From day one, I declared this one of the records I would take onto that mystical desert island, and I still would (along with the Queen is Dead and Loveless, so tacky). In my mind it's the best electronic album ever. The first track "Xtal" is as close to heaven you'll get through a walkman. "Ptolemy" is breakbeat driven lush. "We Are the Music Makers" is my dubby buddy. Some tracks are outright strange, and will rewire parts of your brain. 13 tracks spread over 2LPs on a limited edition grey area pressing. Recommended.

Say what you will, Fallon does a pretty impressive job of impersonating these rock gods.

Another sureshot 45 from Detroit's Funk Night Records via Motor City heavyweights, Will Sessions. These guys are killing it from every angle - funk, jazz, fusion, hip hop... Apparently they can do no wrong! On this one they go for a tough reinterpretation of BR Gunna and Phat Kat's "True Story." These guys are masters at giving hip hop beats a real live feel. On the flipside things get heavy heavy on "Dub Rock," a track based off the Black Milk cut of the same name. Two sides of fire right here, well recommended!

The Best Of Disco Demands Compiled (Limited Edition 5 Disc Set) CD
  • BBE
  • $24.00

BOO-YAO! BBE has been teaming up with Al Kent over the past few years to put out some mind blowing compilations of lost disco heaters, but this one takes the cake! For their latest collaboration, the label has compiled all 5 volumes(!) of Kent's Disco Demands series into one massive 5 CD set (and you know if anyone has enough rare disco gems to fill 5 CDs worth of material, it's Al Kent). Along with impossible to find original cuts the compilation features a ton of exclusive re-edits that Kent has made a name for himself with. Here's what he had to say about the release: "The Disco Demands series started sometime in the early 2000s - I couldn't give you an exact year because it didn't feel like a big deal, so I never noted it. I simply wanted to put out a compilation of some records I really liked and maybe make a little of the money back I was spending on them. Buy some food and stuff. There's always been Disco comps around of course but there was rarely anything that strayed too far from the standards; the same songs kept appearing over and over again, or the comps would feature records you could pick up anywhere for little money. I've never seen the point in that. I gave up judging a record on its value or rarity a long time ago but surely there's more to disco than Exodus, Martin Circus, Mass Production and all those Salsoul, West End and bloody Prelude records. So it was a nice surprise to find that there were other people out there who thought the same way. Volume 1 was pretty straightforward - just some nice records, with the only edit being an instrumental of "Disco Socks"; a strange, thinly veiled reference to the disco sucks movement. Then on Volume 2 I included a few of my edits and introduced the cover up concept to the disco world. That caused a bit of controversy, which of course I loved. And so it continued for five volumes. What we have here then is the full series, give or take one or two cuts, all remastered, many re-re-edited, with lots of nice naked pictures to boot." 45 tracks spread over 5 CDs and housed in individual sleeves with sexy cover art. Must-have release for the disco heads, RECOMMENDED.

Will Sessions are at it again! After garnering props from everyone (including DJ Premier) on those Elmatic instrumentals, and killing it on the funk tip on all those (now sold out) Funk Night 7"s, the five piece band from Detroit is back with "mix takes". What is a mix take you ask? A "mix take" is actually one long continuous funk jam, recorded live and in one take, that goes through all manner of classic hip-hop and funk break tunes. Hear Dilla and Slum Village beats flawlessy morph into the funk breaks they came from, live versions of Nas instrumentals with fresh unheard solos, you get the idea. And if you don't check the video below. Super dope stuff! No tracklist (as it is all a continuous a mix of grooves), but real heads will be able to call all the songs on this piece. Recommended.

Just by the cover, you can already tell this is gonna be pretty awesome. Let's see, you got dudes wearing funky race suits and helmets (looking very proto-daft I might add)? Check. Analog synths and drums? Check. Outer space back drop? Check. Plus diggers will note it was released in the prime year of 1983 on the French Savoir Faire label so you know it's gonna be some funky moments. Case in point with the funky groover "Cruisin'" that kicks off the LP on a spaced out italo boogie tip. The cosmic synth work continues on the title track "Grand Prix", but with an almost tropical flair to the rhythm. You also get some spaced out italo joints in "Crash Barrier" and "Eternity," plus the uptempo mover "On The Border" with those wild guitar solos. Oh and did I mention this was produced by legendary French producers Jean-Pierre Massiera and Bernard Torelli? It's no wonder this is on the top of many Cosmic/italo want lists! Recommended.

  • $19.00

The world of "italo" music spans everything from cosmic disco, to hi-nrg, to balearic classics, and everything in between. Bagarre's Circus definitely falls into the "everything in between" category. Originally released in 1982 on the tiny Italian label Sauvage Musique, Circus has a decidedly left field slant on italo. It's part new wave, part rock, part disco, and totally one of a kind. For a taste, check the single "Lemonsweet," (here in both standard and disco versions) with its super infectious, oddball pop vibe and out-there lyrics from Ann O'Rack (who handles vocal duties throughout). "Dirty Love" takes the energy down a notch on a sleazy Fleetwood Mac tip, while "For Your Pleasure" takes it to a funky post-punk level. Circus is a cult collectors item for the italo diggers, fetching a good price on the 'Bay and the 'Cogs when it pops up, but luckily it's been reissued (and remastered!) here for those of us without deep pockets. 7 tracks total in bizarre pic sleeve. Recommended for those looking for something different.

The Best Of Amy Winehouse (Pink Vinyl) LP

Rest in peace, Amy Winehouse. The British singer's acclaimed blend of r&b, hip-hop, soul, and jazz - fueled and hindered by her well-publicized personal demons - lives on, however, and this special-edition colored vinyl collects 10 tracks from her catalog. There are two versions of "Valerie," a cover of The Zutons track which first appeared on Mark Ronson's Versions album, as well as "Rehab," "You Know I'm no Good," "Back To Black," "Tears Dry On Their Own (sampling "Aint' No Mountain High Enough"), and "Love Is A Losing Game" - from Back To Black - which showcase the perfect chemistry between the British talents. Rareer tracks like Frank outtake "Fool's Gold" and "Best For Me" are also included, and another standout is Winehouse's powerful, achy cover of The Shirelles' "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow". Not only is this LP a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end, most of the tracks are proven dancefloor weapons for DJs. Recommended.

Let me take this as a moment to say The Cure sucks bad now. Coming from a diehard fan, please stop making music. Robert, your voice has turned into an eternal whine, and please change le whack stylez! You look like you belong at The Gathering of the Juggalos, not the pinnacle of new wave history.

That being said, this Record Store Day 2012 release is pretty awesome. For Disentegration fans, Entreat (live recording from Webley 1989) is an essential compliment to the masterpiece. Disentegration is so well-produced (some may say over-produced), this stripped down version really cuts to the core of the black mascara and puffy high tops. Entreat has quite a discographic history (import-only release, released as bonus CD, RSD 2010 Euro-only release), but this marks the first time that it's been available in the US in its full 12 track glory, replicating Disentegration's tracklisting (the original Entreat only had 8 tracks). The long awaited and heavily anticipated debut full length from Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser better known as Holy Ghost!. And I bet you're wondering if it was worth the wait. After dropping the killer "Hold On" way back in 2007 they quickly became in demand, remixing everyone from Cut Copy and MGMT to Moby. It was easy to see why back then, and this album makes it even easier. From the opener "Do It Again" it's clear that they have spent their time behind the boards honing their craft. There is a ton of surefire dance floor fillers here and the sound does not feel overstuffed with unnecessary bells & whistles. I can easily see most of the tracks being played back live to a room full of head over heels ladies. Holy Ghost! have always seemed to straddle the line between revivalist 80s pop-funk and throw back disco to me. There's touches of Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers as well as Gary Numan and a little "Safety Dance". And speaking of the Doobie Brothers, they even got Michael McDonald to drop guest vocals on one of the songs (Some Children)! With songs like "Wait And See", "It's Not Over" and "Slow Motion" you can bet you'll be hearing a lot of this record for the rest of the summer and beyond. 10 tracks spread over 2LPs, now housed in natural brown covers with 24" x 36" fold-out poster of (pretty much) the entire DFA posse. What It Is - The Singles Collection 25x7" Box Set

  • $89.00

As Lab customers, you know that when major label compilations advertise themselves as "rare grooves," it's not always true. That is most definitely not the case here. I don't even know where to start with this one. Here's the story: Rhino recently released a 4CD box set with an insane number of rare soul and funk tracks from the vaults of the Atlantic, Atco, Josie & Warner labels. What we have here is the companion set: a super limited edition (5,000 copies worldwide!) custom boxed set featuring 25 of the rarest tracks from the compilation, remastered and pressed in their original 7" formats, complete with their original B-sides. This thing is done proper, with reproduction sleeves and stickers just like the originals, but without the ridiculous price tags. At record shows or on eBay, you could expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $100 for mint copies of these 45s (with the majority here landing in the $20-$40 range), so while the price tag may look intimidating at first, it's actually a true bargain. Not to mention the music itself! Though you may know some of the names here already (The Commodores, Wilson Pickett, Little Richard, The Meters), the tracks selected for the big name artists are certainly not the most obvious or popular in their catalogs. This ain't no best-of. To dissect this thing further would take a very, very long time, but some of the highlights include: Funkadelic axeman Eddie Hazel with a stunning cover of The Mamas & The Papas' "California Dreamin'," The Gaturs' sunny "Cold Bear," Tony Alvon & The Belairs' blaxploitation soundtrack joint "Sexy Coffee Pot," Titus Turner's "His Funeral, My Trial" and The Beginning of the End's classic "Funky Nassau," parts 1 and 2. Comes in a custom-made 45 box with a handle and locking metal hinge.

  • $20.00

First time domestic reissue of this classic from B-Music and Light In The attic. This deluxe version features glossy gatefold packaging and extended linear notes and a 1971 interview with Serge. Here's our original review: "There are many reasons to add this album to your collection, not the least of which is the incredible covered cooter proudly displayed by Jane Birkin (aka Jane B). Damn those hippie girls from Blow Up. Fans say this is French rebel icon Serge Gainsbourg's masterpiece. And it's got beats. Although broken into a few different movements, Histoire De Melody Nelson is a singular piece of work held together with Serge's gravel lyrics, a recurring tar-pit bass and the story of Melody Nelson. The album is book ended by "Melody" and "Cargo Culte" which both utilize the album's centerpiece- that haunting bass that you will recognize from the Beatnuts' "Superbad." En Melody" also deserves mention for the great intro and controlled spazz guitar work (sampled by De La). Serge was a legend- banned in many countries for his blatant sexual and political messages, loved by women despite having a "head like a cabbage," always centered in controversy and usually producing interesting work. In Serge's later years, he attended an awards show and told Whitney Houston "I want to fuck you" on live TV. ODB would be proud. Recommended.

Vintage electronic sounds from Cameroonian musician Fransis Bebey compiled. Though many know Bebey for his classical guitar compositions and pop songs (which were hits in Africa and French speaking countries), few are aware of his musings with electronic music in the '70s. This compilation from France's Born Bad Records shines light on the era from 1975 to 1982 where Bebey was experimenting with early drum machines, keyboards, organs to totally control his compositions. During this time Bebey embraced the technique of "sound on sound" recording with his new instruments (recording several tracks, sequentially juxtaposed on the same track) and the result has to be heard to be believed. Check out the awesome lo-fi synth groove of "Savannah Georgia" and "Divorce Pygmee," or the cooled out afro vibes of "New Track" and "Fleur Tropicale" for a taste. Back on double vinyl! A daunting task reviewing this record, but here's a try. Not to get all textbook, but 93 Til Infinity is one of finest embodiments of youthful expression. This is the Lebron of hip hop records, a young prize pit bull on a chain link leash. Somehow on this album the producers were able to harness the complete wildness of Souls into 14 coherent hip-hop classics. It's what separates NBA from And 1. Ever hear an early Hiero freestyle? It's one of the baddest things on earth, but freestyles don't make a classic record (just axe Supernat). There was magic in the studio, and it's fitting that the Souls give it up to this magic in the albums title track. "Anything Can Happen" rivals a young Nas in vivid storytelling, but Nas didn't have to coordinate 4 separate voices. That's finesse, and "That's When Ya Lost" is straight fire. Combine "Lost" with "Let Em Know" and "Live and Let Live" and you have one of the most dynamic openings since, hmm... Midnight Marauders? For kicks, throw in equinox apocalypse Del on a track like "Limitations" and see how wild it can get. This review is starting to get sporadically hectic, precisely the opposite of what the Souls did on this one. Excellent quality reissue spread over 2 LPs with pic sleeve.

Man, I really love this record.  We finally managed to get our mitts on some copies, now that it's on its third pressing.  The original pressing is going for over 150 Euros these days, and this edition is limited to 2000 copies, so don't expect it to be around long.  Washed Out is Ernest Greene, and this EP of hazy bedroom synth-pop is probably one of the most notable releases of the so-called Chill Wave genre.  It's sensitive white boy daydream music at its finest, perfect for lazy summer days at the beach.  If you haven't heard any of his stuff before, start with "Feel It All Around" - it's probably the best track here, built from a slowed down italo disco sample and absolutely drenched in reverb.  Other favorites include "You'll See It," (probably the only one of these that you could get away with on the dancefloor, and even then it's kind of a stretch), "New Theory," and "Hold Out."  All six of em are gorgeous though.  Comes in a hand-numbered pic sleeve (how perfect is that cover art, btw?) and plays at 45.  Cop this, take a few bong hits and then slip into some mellow 80s vibes; you won't regret it.  Recommended.

Dinger and Rother actually formed Neu! after splitting up from an early incarnation of Kraftwerk in the early 70's, and created a sound that would eventually influence everyone from Bowie, Eno, Iggy Pop and Thom Yorke. The album was recorded in '71 (produced by Conny Plank) and features early motorik tracks "Hallogallo" and "Negativland," as well as more experimental/psychedelic moments on "Weissensee" and even ambient drones on "Lieber Honig." While his formative years were spent listening to everything from Yes to Photek, Scott Hansen didn't get his hands on an actual guitar or drum machine until he left his native Sacramento for San Francisco in 1995. "Encountering this whole new world at 20 years old was a profound experience," says Hansen, better known by his musical pseudonym Tycho and as the graphic artist ISO50. "At the time, I was just learning the processes of design and music; both felt very similar, and have flowed back and forth for me ever since." As seamless as his two creative outlets have been, nearly a decade passed before the release of Hansen's first proper Tycho LP, Sunrise Projector. And while three striking singles have emerged since then, the sum of all those sepia-toned parts is nowhere near the double-exposed soundscapes of Dive. The product of a prolonged break from IS050's design work and blog, it pays tribute to Tycho's prismatic past (the dense, guitar-guided turning points of "Daydream" and "Adrift") but spends most of its time pointing to the project's not-so-distant future. That can mean any number of things, really, from the halcyon hooks and hopeful horizons of "A Walk" to the expansive, wildly expressive tone poetry of the title track, an eight-minute epic that unfolds like a compressed concept album. Or at the very least, a restless vision of prog-rock - one that's been coated in neon colors and filtered through a thick piece of blotter paper. And then there's "Elegy", a spare curtain closer that pairs a vulnerable crescendo with a fitting bridge to future works. And with that, Dive establishes its position as the most diverse musical statement of Hansen's multi-medium career; the point where his skills as a performer finally catch up with his vaporized vision of a world that doesn't belong to any particular time or place.

    Kindred
A Tribute To The Pioneers Of Jazz Fusion EP
  • The Few
  • $14.00

Will Sessions do it up for the jazz heads. The five piece band from Detroit might best be known around these parts for their amazing live renditions of hip hop classics (see Elmatic or Mix Takes) and their smokin' funk originals (check those Funk Night 45s), but on 2010's Kindred the band showcase their talent for jazz fusion styles. With super influential jazz labels like Tribe coming from Detroit, it only makes sense they would do a tribute to the pioneers of the sound. This really sounds like a rare record from the 70's full of lush spiritual and free jazz moods, together with powerful drums at times. Check the sound on the uplifting "Redirections," "Omniverse" or the driving "Polyester People" and "Seven Miles." The title track "Kindred" even features Tribe Records veteran Wendel Harrison! Excellent stuff from start to finish. Recommended.

Magnificent Dub Music (The Clash) 12"

Duh. Add to cart immediately. Leo Zero dubbing out The Clash? Don't cry when this is gone. Kinda reminds me of our first Hollertronix record. B-side doesn't let down your musical high with a superb edit of Al Hudson Partner's "Music." Highly recommended.
