These 2-way, fully shielded pair includes one active and one passive (slave) speaker that deliver 40 watts of power for suprisingly punchy and vibrant sound reproduction (so good infact, these speakers won the 2012 Desktop Audio Product of the Year from Sound & Image magazine!). AktiMate Mini is an active 2-way system negating the need for a separate amplifier as it has its own 40 Watt per channel amplifier built in to one of the speakers. In early versions the iPod dock was clearly visible - it is now concealed under a cover flap on the top of the active speaker. This dock also accepts the iPhone. The rear panel jack plug accommodates the connection to an MP3 or MP4 player or your computer via the 3.5 mm input. RCA stereo inputs permit connection of any hi-fi source product, e.g. CD Player, tuner etc. RCA stereo outputs to allow for the connection of a subwoofer. It is important to note that the USB connection can only be used for charging purposes.

Should the desire be to run a second pair of AktiMate Mini speakers, the RCA outputs accommodate daisy chaining which will provide independent volume control in each location. It has composite video output for connection to a larger monitor (handy if your iPod has photo storage or video clips). Please note that this feature is suitable only for earlier edition iPods to version 5 and Nano version 2. The AktiMate Mini is Ideal for use as your television speakers - they are fully shielded, so placement alongside a monitor presents no problem. A voltage selector switch permits a change of voltage should you wish to travel to a part of the world using different mains voltages. Regardless of if you're into the mega producer's big room sound (I certainly am), it's hard to deny the appeal of the unique design, which is inspired by the titular costume head Deadmau5 wears while performing. Nocs sent me a review pair of the NS2 Air Monitors and I have been using them ever since. Here are my impressions:

• Setup: the NS2 creates a temporary network for setup. You'll have to enter the username and password to your wireless network to complete setup. The cord connecting the two speakers comes in (2) different lengths to fit your setup.
• Sound: the sound was refreshingly loud and robust. These trump all wireless speakers I've heard. Great bass without being overpowering.
• Perfect Size: these speakers are a great size for the modern living space. They're substantial without being too bulky. In addition, the rubberized finish and rounded corners make you want to move them around depending on the situation.
• These will literally change the way you listen to music in your home or office. NS2 Air Monitors eliminate the reliance on crappy "multimedia" speakers or docks that have become the norm. Imagine yourself coming home listening to your iPhone via headphones. Enter your home, take off the headphones and switch to AirPlay via a couple clicks and continue your musical experience. Or wake up in your bed, grab your phone and play your favorite wake-up song wirelessly.

MANUFACTURER'S REVIEW

The S-DJ05 Active Reference Monitoring Speakers are designed for DJing and music production. These speakers feature excellent sound quality, audio parameter control, built-in linear equalization and four switchable inputs, useful for DJs and producers who need to achieve the highest accuracy in musical reproduction. In addition, the S-DJ05 speakers offer users the ability to change settings such as sound characteristics and audio inputs via a unique manual controller.

Audio Quality

The compact speakers achieve a larger than normal listening area due to the use of a curved waveguide enclosure that directs the soft-dome tweeter's sound in a wider pattern for better imaging and staging. This means more listeners across a larger area of a room can hear the higher frequencies than with traditional designs. Additionally, the Bass Reflex enclosure extends the lower frequency range to provide more mid-bass and bass output. In order to reproduce the highest quality audio possible, the speakers are also equipped with strong high-force magnets for better control of the subwoofers, a low resonance chimney-style heat sink and a bi-amp circuit that drives the tweeter and woofer separately. Whether the speakers are utilized for DJing or producing music,the built-in linear equalizer provides further fine-tuning of sound for all listeners' tastes. The linear equalizer allows users to adjust the low and high bands from -6 dB to +6dB helping to enhance the tonal quality of instruments while producing music or recreate the low frequency sound of a club while DJing for a more realistic experience, important for critical listeners.

Control

Unique to Pioneer's DJ speakers, the included control accessory allows users to simultaneously operate the volume, power and four switchable input channels of both speakers. The dial style control knob also engages the equalizer and muting of both speakers.

Inputs and Extras

The S-DJ05 speakers feature four types of inputs (XLR, TRS and two sets of RCA) that let users connect various devices simultaneously, such as a computer, DJ equipment, portable device, etc. The various inputs eliminate the need to change cable connections so the speakers can be utilized with a broad variety of sources.
