Classic 90s NY house throwback! Nuyorican Soul was a side project of New York DJs Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez and "Little" Louie Vega, (aka the production team Masters At Work). Along with house they combined elements of jazz, salsa, soul and latin music, and gained worldwide acclaim in the process. Their success led to working with luminaries of funk, jazz, and latin music such as George Benson, Roy Ayers, Tito Puente, and many more. Their first two singles, "The Nervous Track" and "Fluid Mind," set the blueprint for what was to come and served as a corner stone for an entire genre of house music. These two legendary tracks are presented together for the first time as a single sleeve double 45 set. Get familiar with the classic sound of NY's latin house scene.

Everyone's been waiting for the Man With The Iron Fists soundtrack to drop with foaming mouths. You may have even picked up the movie's score in heated anticipation. Here we have the lead off 7" of the soundtrack featuring The Black Keys and the RZA's "Baddest Man Alive." If you remember Jim Jaramusch's Ghostdog soundtrack, RZA's Man With The Iron Fists OST goes a similar route. Tracks not featured in the movie get some shine on wax. Now this rock-star mixed with rap-star production just has me fiending for the Judgment Night soundtrack. You can watch The Black Keys and the RZA fight for a fortune cookie in the below video.

This How Do You Do? boxset features the whole album spread across 12 individual 45's, each with the instrumental version (previously unreleased) on the flip and housed in its own pic sleeve. What's more is the all the covers connect within the included plastic display sheet to create a 4 x 3 mosaic! How cool is that?! The whole thing comes neatly packaged in an individually numbered, black on black hard case. Here's what we said about How Do You Do? upon its original release in 2011: After the critically acclaimed A Strange Arrangement, Mayer Hawthorne releases another modern soul/r&b masterpiece.How Do You Do? is a more polished and mature effort, where the Detroit artist explores more of the retro sounds that made him a phenomenon, with a glossy, modern touch. "Finally Falling" is a fun, more uptempo piece of pop-soul with an addictive hook, "Dreaming" showcases a similar lighthearted approach. "The Walk," with its 60s-inspired backing vocals, awesome horn stabs, and funny lyrics, is Mayer doing what he does best, and "Hooked," a Motown-inspired cut, is another standout. Jazzman always seems to unearth those hidden gems that no one else can find! The UK label's latest, Soul Spectrum Records Vol. 1, turns its focus towards rare and obscure dancefloor soul from the late '70s and early '80s. Think deep boogie cuts and soulful disco. The label enlisted Ashley Beedle and Tom Noble to turn their well honed knives on two of the tracks that needed a little fine tuning, but other than that all the tracks a presented in uncut form. It's all compiled by the super dedicated DJ Fryer. Here's what he had to say about Soul Spectrum Records Vol. 1: The endless quest to discover lost interesting music from the past is something of a calling to many. Record collectors and DJs will go without food and spend all their wages to own a single piece of vinyl. Many will travel around the world to towns and cities you would never choose to visit. Happy spending nights in cheap hotels and days in musty old shops looking for that one lucky find, and it does happen, eventually, to all that make the effort. I make no claim to the discovery of any of these records contained here, but I nod my hat to those that did and will again in the future. I have let good as well as rare music be the narrative on this LP. There are some records here that are relatively affordable and I encourage you to go out and find them on original 45s, and play them. Producer extraordinaire Geoff Barrows of Portishead fame steps out on his own to form a band of non-conformists standing in the shadows of Kraut pioneers Neu!, Conrad Schnitzler, and Amon Duul. 2012's ">>" was a lab favorite getting loads of play from the staff. Barrows having his foot in many door ways never sticks to a particular style for very long. The one unifying factor is that regardless of what genre he creates, it's always spot on and done inexplicably well. The latest from Beak> comes in 7 inch form with two tracks that continue the more straight forward approach of ">>". 'Mono' takes a synth lead with a Klaus Dinger-esque Motoric beat that recalls distant memories of driving down the autobahn. 'Kenn' is pure dirge psychedelia! Sludge drums, overdriven bass guitar, that builds to an epic freak out. The 7" comes house in full color pic sleeve and is pressed on black vinyl. Recommended

The mysterious R. Fellow returns with another batch of heavily edited afro beat. Although they're not quite edits, more of a distillation if you will. Fela records are woven together with an ear for the breaks and not much else. Horns and vocals are stripped away, save for a few deftly planted shouts and grunts, and the focus is shifted towards the rhythm section. It's a formula that can prove to be highly effective under the right circumstances.

Second 7" Koudede release from Sublime Frequencies and the 6th in the Guitars From Agadez series. Here the legendary Koudede delivers a scorching, psychedelic guitar performance recorded live in January 2012 at Toumast, the Tuareg compound in Bamako, Mali, in defiance of advice that all Tuareg should leave the city immediately. Listening to these tracks, it is obvious as to why Koudede is crucial to the Agadez guitar scene as both " Hat-iman-in" and "Nelil-igorasan" carry a sense of urgency and fire that is rare in modern music. Limited edition, only 700 copies pressed!

Afro disco heat reissued! Hot Casa hooks it up once again with another impossible to find Nigerian record, this time from the mighty Kiki Gyan aka Africa's answer to Stevie Wonder. If you've been keeping up with the reissue scene, you've probably seen the recent Kiki Gyan comp on Soundway, but here is the original K.G. LP from 1980 in its original form, complete with full cover reproduction and bonus 7"! Check the 10 and a half minute "Disco Train," a disco stomper of epic proportions, packed with floor filling energy and uplifting EWF vibes. Definitely worth it for this one, but also includes "Loving You" and a Boogie Gentleman edit of "Disco Train" on the included one-sided 45! Limited import pressing, recommended.

The jams just keep rolling in for LITA's 10th anniversary, and this might just be the best installment to date! For the uninitiated, this limited 7" series features contemporary artists covering artists from the Light In The Attic roster on the A-side, with the original on the B-side. This volume features Charles Bradley aka "The Screaming Eagle of Soul" taking on Rodriguez's debut single "I'll Slip Away." Bradley does an incredible job laying down the soul while the Menahan Street Band handles the instrumentation to perfection. Retro-modern soul at its best. Flipside features the Rodriguez original remastered by Dave Cooley. Pressed on orange vinyl, housed in custom LITA juke-box style sleeve. Recommended.

For the uninitiated, this series features contemporary artists covering artists from the LITA roster on the A-side, with the original on the B-side. From Light In The Attic, "On this release, Screaming Trees man Mark Lanegan applies his tobacco-flavored tones to 'Same Old Man', a traditional made famous by the haunting New York singer-songwriter Karen Dalton. What Dalton achieves with the traditional instruments of America (notably her celebrated banjo) in her 1971 arrangement, Lanegan re-imagines with strings, droning Indian tones, sitars and sub-continent-sized production. Limited edition pressed on sky blue vinyl, housed in custom LITA juke-box style sleeve.

Jazzman proving once again that they truly dig deeper than most with this killer 45 on their sub-label, Soul 7. On this split 7" they offer up a welcome repress of The Demures' "Raining Teardrops," a hugely sought-after tune in northern soul circles. The track was originally released back in 1965 and was a crowd fave in the UK soul scene, despite not being commercially successful. Get it here and save the triple figures you'd spend on the 'bay. On the flip, Jazzman hooks up the sweet Chicago soul of The Lost Generation's "The Sly, The Slick And The Wicked" from 1970. Quality through and through right here.

For the inaugural 45, LITA taps Los Angeles-based sludge rockers the Zig Zags (of Mexican Summer fame) to cover Betty Davis' "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up." The band does a killer job finding the underlying Sabbath vibe hidden under the surface of the Davis track and get none other than legendary punk icon Iggy Pop for vocal duties. Needless to say, you haven't heard a Betty Davis track sung like this before! The Betty Davis original is featured on the flip. Limited edition pressed on green vinyl, housed in custom LITA juke-box style sleeve.

Analog dopeness from the depths of Brooklyn, Red Hook to be exact! That's where the Analog Players Society studio resides and where they recorded this prime slice of broken beat-house-jazz fusion. The live element is what really shines through here as the skittering drums set the pace, then that fat bass synth kicks it and hits right on time with Cecilia Stalin's lovely scat style vocals. Finally Ethan White's keyboard work ties it all together as the cherry on top, uplifting the vibe of any club / lounge / bar scenario. On a side note, they really couldn't have been more timely with that title, what with Sandy's recent visit to our fair borough! Includes the instrumental version on the flip, exclusive to this 45. Recommended.

Solo debut from Lab alumni Lloydski! Lloyd has been keeping busy since the shipset days - from founding the infamous Tiki Disco Parties, to wreaking havoc with the Hardy Boyz, and moving the nightlife elite on the regular at Le Bain. Now with "Go To Sleep," Lloydski steps out with a proper solo 7" showcasing not only his skills on the synths, but on the mic as well. The production takes cues from 80's synth pop and italo with a new school twist, and features a playfully ironic hook for a dance single (“I don’t want to know, I just want to go to sleep”). This is totally Lloydski. Flipside features a pumped up remix from Mexico City-based producer and Electrique Records label manager, La Royale. Recommended.

Here you have one of the rarest pieces to come out of 1970s Africa. The Semi-Colon existed as an experimental response to Fela Kuti's heavy afro-beat sound. They traded in Fela's horns and jazz stylings for electric guitars and vintage rock n roll. It's a unique sound that retains much of the syncopated poly-rhythms coming out of Nigeria at the time. Check out how tight the band was on "Ebenebe." They slow down and speed up their intertwining rhythms every time they switch between the verse and chorus! Long out of print, Ndia Egbuo Ndia (Afro Jigida) has gained near mythical status. Includes limited edition 7" single featuring the never before released demo recording "Our Fada."

The Brooklyn based duo of Goitia Dietz has returned with their second 7" for DiscError Recordings. They continue their psychedelic experiment with motoric precision, the rhythm is ever present but the machines are free to follow their own path. "Helicopter" is, thankfully, mixed for the dance floor. Its repetitive beat guiding the pulsing synths over the course of peaks and valleys. Although it keeps the tempo up, "Forever" plays like the come down to its companion. The drone is a little heavier and the drums more laid back. A hopeful melody leads you to the conclusion of the night as the sun rises a little earlier than you might have hoped. With their second release Goitia Dietz have refined their sound and made it their own. Hopefully we'll be hearing more from them soon.

Rare jazz rhythms with a funky tropical twist, dug up by Jazzman of course. Once again the UK-based label digs deeper and unearths two sides of seldom heard sounds from French musician Louis Xavier. Xavier combines free form spiritual jazz vibes with funk-fueled rhythms on "Sipote," while "Suite" lets loose for even more mind expansion. Powerful stuff that is impossible to find on original pressing (it remains an unknown piece even in digger circles!), a must for deep jazz and funk heads. Recommended.

Step into Toro Y Moi's time travelling DeLorean and go back to the late 2000's. That's what's happening on June 2009, a retrospective of work from before Chaz Bundick's rise to fame in the indie music scene. The production contained on these five 7"s actually pre-date his 2 full lengths and give us a glimpse of Toro's early experimentation with music software and sampling (from June 2009, duh). The slick synths and technical wizardry of his later efforts is swapped out for a hazy lo-fi glow that ties all these tracks together stylistically. Lots of fuzzy guitars on here too, plus the mellow emotion driven vocals with naive melodies make for a great listening with your significant other. 10 previously unreleased tracks spread over 5 x 45s, each with their own cover art. Also includes a free digital download, postcard, and stickers. Recommended.

Amy Winehouse always seemed to have a soft spot for The Specials. She even jumped on stage during The Specials performance back in the summer of 2009 and made history. This 7" features two great Specials ska tunes covered by Amy Winehouse and recorded live; "A Message To You Rudy" is from the 2008 Rock In Rio Madrid show, while "Monkey Man", backed by Jools Holland's Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, was recorded live on Later in 2007. Limited edition mango vinyl.

Bastard Boots keeps the goodness coming with an entry from Greece's Mishkin (of GAMM / Raw Fusion's Palov and Mishkin). Light one up for the beats version of Linval Thompson's "Free Marijuana" backed with a "Livin Trouble," a party-breaks style track featuring snippets of various party igniters. No brainer really, recommended.

Daptone put it best when it comes to this "new" Bob & Gene single: - This record is Deep. It's not for everybody. It's not for DJs looking for the fastest, loudest drum breaks. It's not for collectors who want to impress their friends. It's not for kicking off dance parties or cutting into samples for your friends to make beats with. This is a record for lovers. If that seems to be overstating the case a bit, maybe you haven't heard Bob & Gene, 'cause everyone I know who listened to their album on Daptone fell in love and now swears by it - it's powerful stuff. "I Can Be Cool" comes from the album, the bittersweet tale of young man without the "cool" resources to hook the girl of his dreams. Flipside is the previously unreleased, "Jackson 5-esque" number, "You Don't Need Me." Nice replica 45 label artwork, too.

This Sharon Jones release offers two more album cuts from the highly received Naturally LP. Good instrumental movement on "How Do I," with a soul sound that could easily be a mid-60s JB production. It's got that polished, but not slick, orchestrated but still loose feeling that makes those JB sides so damn tight. And Ms Jones is clear as ever on the vocals. Well done. B-side is the fast paced "My Man Is A Mean Man" (she's got a lot of dudes).

Here is the first single from Liquid Crystal Project's forthcoming album (the group's third). J Rawls and the gang pay tribute to De La Soul by reworking "Stakes Is High" into a jazz-funk-hop burner, and the is graced by a guest appearance from Phrez Whitted, one of the most highly regarded jazz trumpet players of our time. On the flip is "Stakes Is Still High" featuring some rapping.

Menahan Street Band on Daptone was one of those unexpected Lab hits, we couldn't keep the album in stock (crazy how things catch on like that). Here's two previously unreleased sides from the Brooklyn funk conglomerate: "The Wolf" and "Bushwick Lullaby." Let's hope these cats keep pumping the same intoxicating sound... quoting the great Spoonie Luv: "don't change baby, don't change."

Two excellent tributes to the late great Gil Scott Heron from Patchworks on Heavenly Sweetness. There's no doubt that GSH had a huge impact on modern music, from hip hop and soul to pop and rock, and here Patchworks does an proper job honoring his memory with the deep and emotional "RIP with John Coltrane" and "Spirit Music." The tracks recalls GSH's mid-70's work with Brian Jackson with tender melodies and soaring flute work.
