The Handy Trax is a well thought-out machine, designed with input from collectors and djs. As a result, it is easy to use, surprisingly durable, and has a host of sensible features. For most, the top feature will be the powerful, full sounding stereo headphone output. It's plenty loud enough and sound quality will not have you second guessing what the record "really sounds like." Headphones get an A+. You can also plug the Handy Trax into your receiver or stereo system with its standard RCA outs, so it's possible to double as a home unit. Listening on the built-in speaker is definitely a last resort, but even that is good enough to fill up a small space like a bedroom. Other functions include a strong pitch control knob and effective tone control (just low/high, but it's enough to remove scratchy hiss). Firstly, the Soundwagon has proven to be hugely popular, however it is a novelty item; not a serious record player. That being said, there's something magical about this damned thing like watching dolphins reproduce or bears eating really good beef jerky. Pro-Ject's Leather It record mat is an upgrade to standard felt mats and improve the sound of your favorite records by dampening resonance and lowering overall noise and static. How does a leather slipmat do all this? Pro-Ject describes it best - "Turntable mats have been always a big discussion how they influence the sound. The interaction between the record and the surface can be tracked very easily by the super sensitivity of a good pick up cartridge. Common felt mats give a smooth contact between record and platter but has the disadvantage with static. That means that felt mats often collect a lot of dust which can be then transferred to the record. Also the damping ability is very limited which can be a problem with metal platters. Thick rubbermats over damp the record and have an isolation effect which leaves the static on the record and hearable noise clicks are the result.
