The highly anticipated sophomore album from The xx is here! Coexist follows up their critically-acclaimed 2009 debut, and finds the London-based trio refining their sound, with Jamie xx handling all production and Romy-Madley Croft and Oliver Sim on guitar and vocal duties. Though they've blown up considerably since their debut (especially Jamie as a solo electronic artist), the formula here remains the same - powerful and touching songs about love and loneliness, with delicate guitar work and minimalist arrangements. Jamie's solo work can be heard influencing tracks like "Chained,"" "Sunset," and "Swept Away" that feature a more prominent and thumping rhythm track, but for the most part it's a very restrained piece of work that tugs at the heartstrings. Vinyl version comes packaged in die-cut sleeve with iridescent inner sleeve, CD version with an iridescent booklet. Recommended.

Bastard Jazz does one up for the downtempo heads! Tempo Dreams is a true return to the downtempo sound for the esteemed Brooklyn-based label. The compilation is curated by Detroit's Tall Black Guy (who has been killing it lately on BSTRD BOOTS with his reworks of Fela and Al Green), who picks 11 of his favorite up and coming producers that are just under the radar and offer a fresh take on the downtempo style. You probably haven't heard of most of these youngins (which is a good thing), but you can trust that they're coming correct on the beats! Check the heady bumps on Teru's "Time To Reinvent," or Chief's "Scanner Revolution," while Tensei and Jeriko Jackson get jazzy on "Space Colony" and "Only Just" respectively. The whole thing is quality through and through with entries from Buscrates, FloydCheung, Doc Illingsworth, Ta-Ku, Evil Needle, MonkeyRobot, Shecky's Jazzy Tofu, and Tall Black Guy himself. Anyone who used to get down to Mo Wax, Ninja Tune, etc. will appreciate these new school takes on the style. Recommended.

The highly-anticipated new album from LA-based producer Flying Lotus is here! Since emerging on the scene with 1983 in 2006, then breaking ground on Warp Records with Los Angeles in 2008, Steven Ellison (aka Flying Lotus) has become a beacon for the new school beats movement. His influential Brainfeeder label is constantly pushing boundaries with eclectic, forward-thinking releases that shape and mold the scene, while his own work continues to evolve and grow exponentially. Now with Until The Quiet Comes, his fourth full length album, Flying Lotus delivers his most realized and coherent piece to date. Whereas Cosmogramma took us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy and beyond, Until The Quiet Comes brings us back to earth with a very personal and introspective sound rooted in cosmic jazz as much as it is in beats. From the opening notes of "All In," you can already tell you are in for something special. Lush arrangements and free flowing melodies seem to come natural for Flylo with nothing ever seeming rushed or forced ("Until The Colours Come, "Only If You Wanna"). Then come the heavy bump of the beats that work as a perfect counter balance to the mystic jazz vibes ("Until The Quiet Comes," "Getting There," "The Nightcaller," "Tiny Tortures"). Of course Flying Lotus also gets a little help from his friends to fully realize this cosmic vision. Check the A-list guest appearances from Erykah Badu on "See Thru To U," Thom Yorke on "Electric Candyman," as well as Thundercat on "DMT Song," and Laura Darlington on "Phantasm." 18 tracks in all housed in brilliant cover art with free download card included. Unless Stones Throw gets into porn (Madlib vs. Butt Dentist!), I don't know how they are going follow this up. Without exaggeration, this is one of the greatest meeting of the minds in this whole SP1200 using, dusty records searching, notebook rhyme tagging, state of mind. MF Doom arguably at his amoeba genius prime, mixed with the unpredictable stoned aesthetics of Madlib? Kids in Germany are going crazy over this! Stones Throw has always been soft-spoken and classy in their marketing (which I respect them for), but with this they need to pop in some "boo-ya's!" and "fo dat azz's!!!" Aside from the silliness, I'm here to tell you that this album lives up to the billing, reading like a mesmerizing novel. The inclusion of lyrics in the CD insert (vinyl buyers get it at Stonesthrow.com) is a welcome introduction into the world that is Doom (no more rewinding!); and Madlib, who sometimes is stretched too thin, steps up to this encounter with some of his most textural work. This is X-factor issue #1, you don't know what the hell will happen. Instead of ruining the story, I'll let you explore the audio clips, here are some to nipple at: "Accordion, Raid feat. Prepare to have your mind officially blown. The much anticipated full length debut from the muthaf'n Gaslamp Killer has landed and it totally exceeds all expectations. Over the years, GLK has grown quite a cult following as a respected DJ and producer. From co-founding the legendary Low End Theory night (where he is still a resident DJ) to touring the globe, his high-energy sets have become the stuff of legend. Now on Breakthrough, Gaslamp Killer takes his heavy, psych-influenced sound to the next level with a fully realized album of devastating beats and bugged-out psychedelia on Flylo's Brainfeeder imprint. The Do-Over is back on wax! Their fourth vinyl release comes as a 10" split featuring J-Rocc's new alias Girls We Like and Oakland upstart D^Bo. Girls We Like kick it off with "Don't Look Back," a killer warm weather groove (as expected from the funky man known as J-Rocc) that's sure to become an anthem over the summer. Loving the mix of soulful vibes with that solid 4x4 bump that sure to get bodies moving across the globe. D^Bo continues the feeling with "Jam," a track that would fit right in with the joints from Theo, Moody, and Andres... deep and moving Detroit vibes for sure! Comes in slickly designed gatefold sleeve with spot varnish printing, recommended.

Slum Village released Fantastic, Vol.2 in 2000, after a long delay caused by label drama, etc. Certainly the Detroit group's best work, the highly praised album shaped the direction underground hip-hop/neo soul would take in the following years. T3 and Baatin's rhymes contributed to this feat, but it was the late Jay Dee's production work that attracted the most attention - subtle-yet-potent baselines, super soulful grooves, and his signature "loose" feel_ The beats still sound as fresh and brilliant as ever, and this deluxe drop compiles them over 3 LPs. Expect the original tracklisting - "Players," "Hold Tight," "Tell Me," "I Don't Know," "Once Upon A Time," "Fall In Love," "Raise It Up" - plus later released remixes of "Hold Tight" and "Forth And Back". Also included in the 6-panel gatefold jacket package is a limited edition 24x24 poster, making it a must-have for Dilla, hip-hop, and beats fans. Recommended.

From the mind that brought you Jay-Z and the Wailers comes the latest in reggae hip-hop mashes - King Tubby Vs. Wu-Tang Clan! New Zealand's Chris Macro is the dude bringing these worlds together, hence the sub-title The Macro Dubplates and apparently this was actually released on the interwebs back in 2009 (his website claims this album defined the reggae/hiphop mash scene). This is the first time time it is available on vinyl so if you're into these sounds and are inclined to play vinyl - don't miss it! Features 9 tracks including "Brooklyn Battle Axe," "Money Rules Everything Around Me," "Method Man Meets Fat Man," "Dubbing It Raw," "Criminology Movement," "Triumph Over Babylon" and more.

The first break on here's the killer (the one that starts with the 'Car Wash' dj intro). The second one's the juggular with it's hard thumpin bass. The first side ends with one of the longest skratch sentences ever made. The whole second side is electro heaven with 8 separate tracks that stay on beat. We think there should be more of these (variations/variety of beats within the same track or back-to-back) on skratch tracks... just like Idris used to do. You'll like this one.

It's those catchy choruses that get you first. Outkast got a way of pulling you into their albums with these addictive hooks. You can't deny the nonsensical hypeness of the title track (oh yeayer!). Thats are easy. Same for the droning delivery of Millenium and Elevators. Then you start listening to whole sides because you're too lazy to flip the shit, and you discover the hidden soul joints that are ATLiens' foundation. They got those songs that make you want to smile and cry at the same time, and slow ones where the conscious lyrics shine. The singing on 13th Floor/Growing Old has got me in a headlock lately, just like Liberation from Aquemini. Most of the album has this slower feel to it, something serious to tell in murky water watchin ceiling fans go round. Outkast talks to ghosts and spirits.

A Record Store Day Black Friday 2012 release that marked the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Incesticide. A great compilation album initially released to hold over the newly found rabid fans between the Nevermind & In Utero studio albums. Just as proper a Nirvana album as any of the others, the album features some of the band's greatest moments including the great Vaselines covers in "Molly's Lips" and "Son of A Gun" as well as the then unreleased "Aneurysm". The 20th anniversary edition is a limited 2LP pressing on 200 gram vinyl pressed at 45 RPM for a great audiophile listening experience. Recommended.

BOO-YAO! BBE has been teaming up with Al Kent over the past few years to put out some mind blowing compilations of lost disco heaters, but this one takes the cake! For their latest collaboration, the label has compiled all 5 volumes(!) of Kent's Disco Demands series into one massive 5 CD set (and you know if anyone has enough rare disco gems to fill 5 CDs worth of material, it's Al Kent). Along with impossible to find original cuts the compilation features a ton of exclusive re-edits that Kent has made a name for himself with. Here's what he had to say about the release: "The Disco Demands series started sometime in the early 2000s - I couldn't give you an exact year because it didn't feel like a big deal, so I never noted it. I simply wanted to put out a compilation of some records I really liked and maybe make a little of the money back I was spending on them. Buy some food and stuff. There's always been Disco comps around of course but there was rarely anything that strayed too far from the standards; the same songs kept appearing over and over again, or the comps would feature records you could pick up anywhere for little money. I've never seen the point in that. I gave up judging a record on its value or rarity a long time ago but surely there's more to disco than Exodus, Martin Circus, Mass Production and all those Salsoul, West End and bloody Prelude records. So it was a nice surprise to find that there were other people out there who thought the same way. Volume 1 was pretty straightforward - just some nice records, with the only edit being an instrumental of "Disco Socks"; a strange, thinly veiled reference to the disco sucks movement. Then on Volume 2 I included a few of my edits and introduced the cover up concept to the disco world. That caused a bit of controversy, which of course I loved. And so it continued for five volumes. What we have here then is the full series, give or take one or two cuts, all remastered, many re-re-edited, with lots of nice naked pictures to boot." 45 tracks spread over 5 CDs and housed in individual sleeves with sexy cover art. Must-have release for the disco heads, RECOMMENDED.

Third installment of the popular Ron Hardy Edit comp on CD! Heads should know the deal, but here's a primer for those who don't know: Ron Hardy is a hugely influential DJ, up there with Levan and Mancuso, who helped usher in the era of House music at the Muzic Box in Chicago (where he was resident from '82-'86) and the current re-edit craze. His sets are the stuff of legend as he would mix everything from disco, soul, new wave, EBM, and proto-house music together in a way that would make everybody lose it on the floor - often times playing his own edits off a Reel-To-Reel player! Many consider those edits as secret weapons for the dance floor and recently a few have been popping up on bootleg 12"s, but this is the first time a whole bunch of them have been compiled on CD. Here you are treated to special edits of classics from New Order ("5 8 6"), The Nightwriters ("Let The Music Use You"), Mr. Fingers ("Stars"), Liaisons Dangereuses ("Los Niños del Parque"), Pam Todd & Love Exchange ("Let's Get Together"), Loose Joints ("Pop Your Funk"), and James Brown ("Body Heat") amongst others. Recommended.

Stones Throw alpha operator Peanut Butter Wolf and Minimal Wave Records grande dame Veronica Vasicka partner once again for the second volume of the Minimal Wave Tapes series, an exploration of finely collected DIY, underground electronic music. The diligent research put in here offers to the rest of us previously private or limited releases and, while the sounds comingle with industrial, punk, disco genres, these songs have a stark and bold uniqueness, perhaps attributed to their lower fidelities and amateur genuineness, but mostly to say: the synths, the vocals, the drum machines, etc. on this record just aren't like others you've heard. Contemporary artists such as Los Angeles' Geneva Jacuzzi and technoid globetrotter Felix Kubin share space with tracks from second timers Das Ding and Ohama. Darker and edgier still than the first, a must-have for anyone who enjoys the outskirts of electronic music. Highlights: the grainy synth-driven pop march of In Aeternam Vale's "Annie" (certainly a point of reference for bands like Stereolab and Broadcast), and Hard Corps' hard hitting crowd-stirrer "Dirty".

Loosies celebrates Fool's Gold's 5 year anniversary with collaborations featuring Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Casey Veggies, BK newcomers Flatbush Zombies, Cool Kids Chuck Inglish + so much more. A-Trak's "Piss Test" remix gets murked by El-P. The Araabmuzik produced 'Molly Ringwald' features Danny Brown saying wild ish over a SCARY beat. Young Veggies brings the Cali breeze in 'Sauna'. Throughout Loosies the theme sticks to smoothed out Cali vibes and trippy Trap slappers. Jazzman always seems to unearth those hidden gems that no one else can find! The UK label's latest, Soul Spectrum Records Vol. 1, turns its focus towards rare and obscure dancefloor soul from the late '70s and early '80s. Think deep boogie cuts and soulful disco. The label enlisted Ashley Beedle and Tom Noble to turn their well honed knives on two of the tracks that needed a little fine tuning, but other than that all the tracks a presented in uncut form. It's all compiled by the super dedicated DJ Fryer. Here's what he had to say about Soul Spectrum Records Vol. 1: The endless quest to discover lost interesting music from the past is something of a calling to many. Record collectors and DJs will go without food and spend all their wages to own a single piece of vinyl. Many will travel around the world to towns and cities you would never choose to visit. Happy spending nights in cheap hotels and days in musty old shops looking for that one lucky find, and it does happen, eventually, to all that make the effort. I make no claim to the discovery of any of these records contained here, but I nod my hat to those that did and will again in the future. I have let good as well as rare music be the narrative on this LP. There are some records here that are relatively affordable and I encourage you to go out and find them on original 45s, and play them. Turntables On The Hudson pays homage to its winter home, Cielo on Little West 12th Street NYC (also home to Francois K's Deep Space parties). Here is the second volume compiled by resident DJ Nickodemus with a killer selection of eclectic tracks that keep the Cielo crowd moving. A-side features the fat, dubby beats of Mr Scruff & Kirsty Almeida's "Pickled Spider," while Afrolicious takes it into the deep global funk of "Dub For Mali." Flip it over and get down to the massive uptempo afro funk of Meitz' "Zwakalani (SUMO Rebounce)" and the MDCL remix of Mariella's "Love Sick." Recommended.

Very welcome reissue of this rare groove holy grail. Starvue's "Body Fusion" has appeared on a few soul compilations in the past, but this is the first time we've had it on 12", and with convincing label reproductions to boot. The track has been highly sought-after since it's 1980 release on Midwest International thanks to its supremely sexy and sensuous soul steppin' groove produced by The Chi-lites' Clarence Johnson. Top it all off with stunning and emotive vocals and you have a pure soul masterpiece that withstands the test of time. Includes short version and long version on the flip. Recommended.

The After Dark CDR was originally only available on Glass Candy's '07 west coast tour (only 100 pressed!). Due to popular demand (and the fact that this shit is REALLY REALLY good), the guys over at Italian's Do It Better repressed the joint and now you too can have a piece of this modern disco hotness. This isn't a mixtape either (though it kinda looks like one) - it actually contains full unreleased tracks and demo versions from soon-to-be-huge new disco/new italo artists Glass Candy, Mirage, Chromatics, Farah, and Professor Genius. Just check some of these sounds: The sweet and soulful disco grooves of Glass Candy with "Rolling Down The Hills," their take on the Kraftwerk classic "Computer Love," and Belle Epoque's "Miss Broadway," the bittersweet italo vibes of the Chromatics with "Hands In The Dark" and "In The City," and Mirage's spaced-out italo vocoder action on "Lady Operator" and "Lake Of Dreams," and the avant slow motion disco sickness that is Farah's "Dancing Girls." 14 tracks total, no throw aways. Do not miss this if you are a fan of the disco-italo sound (you'll regret it - trust me). Recommended.

The RZA has come full circle. With the recent release of The Man With The Iron Fists in theaters, the RZA has gone from writing and producing kung fu-inspired raps and beats, to writing and producing kung fu movies and soundtracks! Here we have the original motion picture score (not to be confused with the soundtrack) to the flick, much of which is very cinematic in nature, but there are a handful of beats in the mix with the signature razor-sharp touch. Check the "Opening Titles" (featuring some famous ODB lyrics), "Jungle Village," "Jack Knife," "The Gemini Fight," "Last Battle," and of course the title track, "The Man With The Iron Fists." Pressed up on loud and crisp double vinyl!

Omar-S' FXHE imprint has been operating with all pistons firing for at least the past year, if not longer. One of the standouts from 2012 was "Wayne County Hill Cop's Part 2" which saw the label boss teaming with the heretofore unknown Ob Ignitt. The synth heavy track was an undeniable banger that teetered on the edge of cheese while wearing its indebtedness to Axel F proudly on its sleeve. Ignitt returns to FXHE for his first proper solo release. The mysterious Detroit based artist takes a step away from the Wayne County track two deliver two cuts of unbridled, otherworldly tech house. "Oh Jabba" opens with a rather deceptively smooth keyboard solo, but quickly evolves into a completely different animal. It's a space-age funk bomb, replete with heavy kicks, overdriven percussion, and plenty of interweaving synth work. Things continue with the distorted drum work on "Space Age Steppin," a track that expertly blends its bubbling bassline with a myriad of arpeggiating synths that weave in and out of the mix. An unlabeled track that revisits the drums from "Oh Jabba" closes out the release. Recommended.

Looks like Nite Jewel is finally coming out of her shell. We all loved her lo-fi synth beats on Italians Do It Better, and her funky collab with fellow Los Angelino Dam-Funk, but on One Second Of Love, Ramona Gonzales showcases her vocal talents with newfound confidence. The beats have kind of taken the back seat to her voice on this one, (which is clearly the focal point of the album) displaying stunning range and hitting all sorts of emotions. Check the title cut "One Second Of Love" for a taste, a deft take on that 80's synth pop sound reminiscent of Kate Bush or Stevie Nicks. There's also the slinky ballad "She's Always Watching You," the sensual "In The Dark" or the moody "Mind & Eyes" that prove there's many shimmering facets to Nite Jewel's sound. Recommended.

Perception Productions was a New York based label that released records from the late 60s through 1974. Their catalog is an eclectic collection of jazz, funk, soul and proto-disco. The label's roster provides a snapshot of the Manhattan black music scene of the period, featuring established greats alongside up and coming acts. Early on they were lucky enough to sign artists like Shirley Horn, James Moody and Dizzy Gillespie. Gillespie released two albums for the label, his label debut The Real Thing funked up the legendary trumpet players sound and put him in more of a contemporary setting. It's a rare groove masterpiece that includes the sought after "Matrix" (sampled most famously by the Beatnuts for their "World's Famous"). Along with breathing new life into the careers of jazz masters, Perception made forays into the world of soul and funk. They signed up Bill Curtis from the Fatback Band and a young producer from Harlem called Patrick Adams. The latter started working with Jon Bartel to produce the funk rock of "Naturally Good" and the break heavy "You've Just Been Bitten." But Adams' greatest moments at the label came with Black Ivory and the influential musical genius of Leroy Burgess. The Black Ivory tracks featured here come from their sophomore album for Today, Don't Turn Around. Bill Curtis and the Fatback Band came up through New York street funk and moved into a more disco informed sound. Their breakthrough came when "Going To See My Baby" was picked out by New York's number one soul DJ Frankie Crocker. From there they went on to release many disco funk hits. Aside from the big artists and producers mentioned above Perception and Today were home to many one off acts as well. Whether it's the Jackson 5 aspirations of the Eight Minutes or the soulful pop of Bobby Rydell, there is plenty of quality material to take in. Thankfully DJ Spinna has done another stellar job for BBE and separated the wheat from the chaff for the rest of us. Recommended.

One of the most talked about releases on the most talked about label finally gets repressed! Originally released back in 2011, Terekke's Damn EP was the first L.I.E.S. white label and helped cement the Brooklyn label's reputation as a leader in the outsider house movement. Already considered a modern classic, both "Damn" and "Pf Pf Pass" nail that hazy, lo-fi house vibe to perfection. For awhile people were paying exorbitant prices for the OG press on discogs, so if you slept on it the first time around, consider this your second chance! Recommended.

Stevie Nicks' contribution to Fleetwood Mac is undeniable. She brought substance to the already multi-platinum rock band at a time when the hedonism of the free love era was imploding on itself. Nicks was not afraid to confront the disillusionment of the 70s and air her own demons in the process. Her excavation of the human condition was accompanied by poetic eloquence and delivered gracefully. Slow To Speak has compiled three of her standout tracks during her time with Fleetwood Mac. Originally brought on as a package with Lindsey Buckingham because she was his partner, Nicks proved to be much more than a sidekick.

Originally sold out at Record Store Day 2012, but we managed to snag a couple more copies for those that slept. Matthew Dear steps out of the darkness that was 2010's Black City and into more melodic, synth-laden, vocal-driven territory on Headcage. You can tell from the title track "Headcage" that this is a whole new ball game for Dear, who is actually working with other producers and vocalists on the EP. From Ghostly: "Headcage" leads with a dense, mutating cluster of breaths, whispers and assorted technicolor sounds until it coalesces into a hearty chug. The song gets an added aural heft from co-producers Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid, a Swedish partnership notable for work on albums like Blonde Redhead's Penny Sparkle, Glasser's Ring and Fever Ray's self-titled record. The unabashed melodic thrust of the lead vocals by Jonny Pierce (of Brooklyn outfit The Drums) makes "In the Middle (I Met You There)" one of Dear's most perfect—and unique—pop creations. The first duet in Dear's decade-long career, the dopamine flies when Dear's baritone kicks in. "Street Song" forgoes percussion and propulsion for a drifting, intoxicated reverie of an exotic melodic phrase, bubbling bass and Dear's falsetto. Something perhaps culled from a late night reverie heard from a window, or an imagined city long gone. "Around a Fountain" offers a dubby low end and claustrophobic atmosphere, but Dear's voice leavens the darkness, rounding out the EP with hymn-like whisper. Printed on grey marbled vinyl with beautiful pic sleeve designed by Michael Cina. Limited to 700 copies.

This VP anthology does a proper job compiling the very best of the self-described "yellow like cheese" walking jewlery store... King Yellow. You can tell a Yellowman fan (who isn't?) put this together, the track order is meticulous: the "Mad Over Me-Shorties" combo, ending with the epic "Morning Ride." (Would have like to see "Step It Out Of Babylon" though). One Yellowman question that always evaded me: does he really get all the tang he sings about... and who would win in a bravado battle... Yellow or Big Daddy Kane? 19 tracks spread over double vinyl, recommended.

Rounding out All City's LA Series with volume #0 (aka #11) is 2/3rds of the SA-RA Creative Partners, Shafiq and Om'Mas Keith! Shafiq kicks things off with "DNA," an intense workout in cut-up A.D.D. beats, split into three easy-to-digest parts. The track is a melting pot of LA styles, from chopped up hip hop and funk, lo-fi experimental noise, and diced radio vocals, all assembled to make heads nod from coast to coast and beyond. Om'Mas Keith's side switches gears into quirky leftfield r&b territory on "Girl Is A Player." Sounds akin to James Pants and D-F with a hint of 80's Prince. Instrumental included.

It's pretty common knowledge that Fela Kuti created afro-beat.  His influence on not only that genre, but untold others is undeniable.  This collection of Fela covers (approved by his estate) and Fela-inspired songs has been lovingly compiled by Egon and released by Now Again, who really know how to do it up when it comes to compilations.  To wit: This box set contains four 10" records, as well as a large-format booklet that's filled with stories, liner notes and never-before-seen photos of Fela Kuti.  This is an excellent celebration of not only Fela and his music, but the music he inspired in others.  Recommended.

Detroit just can't stop turning out the heat! This might be the first title that we've picked up from Big Strick's 7 Days label, perhaps we were not aware of what we were missing. Generation Next sees Strick's son, who's previously popped up on Big Strick cuts like Alpha & Omega and Resivior Dogs, move out on his own. The 17 year old's eponymous EP is an exercise in effortless and effective simplicity. All four cuts a quite refined, showing a sharpened focus from such a young producer. The tracks are synth and drum machine focused, infused with resonance and an ear for space. Equally enjoyable on headphones or in the club. Recommended.

Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus helped to reinvent the sound of European techno in the 1990s through their work as Maurizio and Basic Channel. The duo were key figures in the growing dub techno scene and were constantly blowing wigs back with their releases. At the same time they were turning out incendiary tracks on their Basic Channel imprint they were releasing house on the sly through Main Street Records. "I'm Your Brother" was the label's first outing and is an uplifting ode to New Jersey garage house. Loosely based on The Isley Brothers "Caravan Of Love," the track features the vocals of Andy Caine, and is one of the skippiest, most uplifting soulful garage house tracks ever. One that is sure to get even the most sullen of party goers in to more positive spirits. On the flip Chez Damier and Ron Trent provide a rework that is every bit as powerful with a darker, more minimal edge to it. Recommended.

In demand secret weapon of the disco Illuminati! Garalude's "Cero" previously dropped on a limited Japan only release back in 2004 and has been in the hands of only a select few since then. Internasjonal does us all a favor with this massive reissue. "Cero" is a percussive house jam that slowly piles on layers of keyboards and accordion lines until it all builds into a crescendo of sound. It's one of those tracks that is sure to please anyone who's been feeling the recent Four Tet or Daphne sound. Plenty of poly-rhythmic action to keep things moving. On the flip DJ Harvey's sought after remix turns up the Afro-house and adds plenty of Fela inspired horn lines. You can't go wrong with either side of this 12". Recommended.

It's always exciting to see Rub N Tug remix on a record's spinner. The duo takes Lindstrom's "De Javu" on a night out in NYC, bathes it in a little of Thomas Bullock's mescal and turns it out on the dance floor. There's a little bit of a retro 90s house feel to the affair. On the flip Owen Pallett (bka Final Fantasy) takes "No Release" to its logical Balearic conclusion. The arpeggios get piled on in just the right way. Already getting plenty of play from Lindstrom's fellow Norwegian, Prins Thomas.

The alway on-point Soul Jazz label continues to dig and collect the best in overlooked and under-appreciated genres with this collection of Country (yes, country) gems from pioneering female artists. The Country Soul Sisters compilation charts the rise of female singers within the genre from the years of 1952 to 1978. Everyone know Dolly Parton and probably Nancy Sinatra too, but have you heard of Loretta Lynn, Tanya Tucker, Bobbie Gentry and Tammy Wynette? Unless you are a country fan, probably not. This comp focuses on songs that are far removed from the traditional conservative image of Country music and actually deal with serious and pressing topics such as female empowerment, bigotry, workplace sexual harassment, and abortion. Not exactly songs about dogs and old pick up trucks that's for sure! From the label: "Forget outlaw country or alt. country, male dominance of country music meant that female country singers were the original outsiders – simply by nature of being themselves. What is so equally fascinating is how these artists managed to negotiate a space for themselves that was acceptable to the general male conservative hierarchies whilst at the same time remaining true to themselves as both artists and women for their largely female public." Double CD version comes with 68 page full color book filled with extensive liner notes profiling the rise of female artists in country with artist profiles, interviews and archive photography. Limited edition double LP version comes in beautiful gatefold sleeve with full sleeve notes on thick, loud import vinyl.

Debut single for Airhead on the esteemed R&S label. The London-based producer's beats have been drawing comparisons to early James Blake and with one listen to "Wait" it is easy to see why. The subtle textures, abstract programming, and oddly chopped-but-still-catchy vocals seem to be a winning formula that only a select few producers can pull off with class and style. Airhead is definitely one of them. Also includes "South Congress" on the flip for more lush and delicate post-dubstep flavor.

Another super useful comp from the good peoples at BBE. This time they tap Johnny D of Henry Street Music fame for an excellent selection of (mostly) early 80's floor fillers and groovers. The selection here rides the line between disco, boogie, italo/NRG and proto-house with the common theme being that they will get people feeling good and dancing the night away. Check the sound on classics from Mahogany, Klein & MBO, Cerrone and Ashford & Simpson, right next to more obscure cuts and hard to find dubs from Lafleur, Sass, Kasso, B Beat Girls, Gaucho and more. Also includes a superb mixed version from Johnny D himself! Recommended.

Russian editor extraordinaire Buzz Compass drops his first release for Glenview on white vinyl! After reworking the likes of Ghostface and Run DMC in the past, Buzz sets his sights on overlooked 80's pop and disco gems for West Fulton Sessions Vol. 2. Here he uses unlikely parts to extend and re-work the originals into modernized dancefloor bangers. Check the style on Eurythmics "Put The Blame On Me," where he loops and filters it up to totally work the floor into a sweat. Similarly, he works his loop magic on the Marvin Gaye classic "I Want You," and Carrie Lucas' "I Gotta Keep Dancin" transforming both into prime peaktime jams for the soul disco sets. Also includes Geoffrey Williams' "Cinderella," edited by Buzz for the 80's babies.

Record Store Day 2013 Exclusive! Limited edition repress of Winston Edwards' 1974 dub classic Natty Locks Dub just in time for RSD. Early and very heavy instrumental dub vibes here, recorded at Lee Perry's Black Ark studio and Joe Gibb's state of the art recording complex on Retirement Crescent. One listen and it is easy to see why this is considered by many a holy grail of dub. 10 tracks total with full pic sleeve reproduction. Very limited stock, recommended.

Funky dancefloor gold from Bohannon repressed!. The cuts on the Me & The Gang EP are surprisingly hard to come by these days, but thankfully they get a proper reissue here complete with remastered sound for extra bump on the dancefloor. Check the massive disco stomp of "Me & The Gang," found here in the rare 12" format - a sure shot dancefloor killer with soulful vocals and a beat that just don't quit. Up next is the floor-filling instrumental disco number "The Groove I Feel," a super infectious groove that you just cannot help but move to, while "Maybe You Can Dance" takes the flip in it's extended 12" promo version - almost 13 minutes of uptempo disco delight. Recommended.

Perhaps surpassing his "Missy Thing" booty from a few years ago, Om Records' Fred Everything takes on M.I.A.'s "Bucky Done Gun" and turns out three hot house remixes. The main remix features M.I.A.s vocals over some tough house beats before the track really drops and turns into one full of swirly keys and acid. Also includes an instrumental as well as another, tougher remix with the vocals in tact.

Here is the first single from Liquid Crystal Project's forthcoming album (the group's third). J Rawls and the gang pay tribute to De La Soul by reworking "Stakes Is High" into a jazz-funk-hop burner, and the is graced by a guest appearance from Phrez Whitted, one of the most highly regarded jazz trumpet players of our time. On the flip is "Stakes Is Still High" featuring some rapping.

The three artists featured on the L.I.E.S. American Noise Sampler reveal the diversity of Ron Morelli's New York based label. The A side is given over to Torn Hawk who's "This Is Crime & Lace" blurs the boundaries between avant garde musique concrete, experimental electronica and post-punk industrial soundscapes while still featuring traces of Chicago house. Early label contributor Marcos Cabral drops a slow and sinister slice of techno with a rubber-band bassline that will work its way through your skull. Closing out the release is relative new comer Delroy Edwards who hit hard with his label debut, 4 Club Use Only. "Feelings" is a fittingly distorted blown out take on house that was recently featured on Ben UFO's Fabric mix CD.

Whether he knew it or not (he probably didn't), Lil Jon was always generally associated with Diplo's Hollertronix parties, not only because the music he was producing was ubiquitous at parties during that time, but also because Lil Jon's balls-to-the-wall Crunk movement seemed to match up perfectly with the whole Hollertronix aesthetic. Years later, the two have finally spent some time together in the studio and the resulting product is "U Don't Like Me," which takes classic southern fight-rap and mixes it with some gnarly dubstep sounds. The two styles go together so well it's hard to believe we haven't heard more of this before. Dancehall collective South Rakkas Crew give the track a rock-n-roll makeover that brings to mind Trick Daddy's "Let's Go," which was, of course, produced by Lil Jon. You also get the instrumental and acapella here, making it four tracks in all. Pic disc with artwork by Mike Jones. Recommended.
