Originally released in 2000, De Stijl remains a favorite among The White Stripes fans for the its simple blues-punk-metal sounds. The title is a reference to a Dutch art movement of the same name, and the Detroit duo has acknowledged the minimalist and deconstructionist aspects of De Stijl influencing the album, which includes "Apple Blossom," "You're Pretty Good Look (For A Girl)," "Death Letter," "Truth Doesn't Make A Noise," "Jumble, Jumble," and "Why Can't You Be Nicer To Me?". This 180g version was remastered from original analog tapes, and from start to finish was NEVER digitized - great sound quality guaranteed. The album cover- which itself draws from De Stijl aesthetics - was also remastered from original prints. Recommended.

Meat Is Murder is the album that turned The Smiths from a really good band into a really great band. Morrissey and Johnny Marr started injecting more political commentary into the writing, they famously forbade the other members from being photographed eating meat, and the band branched out their sound quite a bit as well. From the aggressive alternative rock on "The Headmaster Ritual," to the rockabilly sounds of "Rusholme Ruffians," the wistful ballad that is "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore," and the funky bass on "Barbarism Begins At Home" - probably the most club worthy track out of all of them. Of course, most Americans know if for "How Soon Is Now," but because this reissued version is of the original UK release, that track isn't included here. Even without that song, this one is required listening and a nice lead in to the more polished sounds that were still to come on The Queen Is Dead. 9 tracks total on thick 180g vinyl, recommended.

Club heat from A-Trak on limited colored vinyl! The Tuna Melt EP has been tearing up clubs around the globe for a minute now, but finally sees a proper vinyl release - on "tuna" colored wax of course! If anyone knows how to work the big room, it's gonna be Fool's Gold boss/DJ superstar A-Trak, and here he delivers four cuts to destroy the dancefloor with ease. Check the trap-inspired dubstep tune "Landline" with GTA that features Trizzy showing of his scratching skills (plus a crazy Woody Woodpecker sample at the drop!), and the peaktime disco house chops of "Disco Nap" with Oliver (aka U-Tern & Oligee) for starters, then take it into high gear with the heavyweight pressure of "Jumbo" with Galantis, and the title track "Tuna" with Tommy Trash. Comes in custom pic sleeve from Dust La Rock, recommended.

This triple vinyl set collects three iconic Miles Davis albums released on Prestige during 1958-61: Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet, Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet, and Steamin' With The Miles Davis Quintet. These are some of my personal favorites from his discography (all critically considered 5 star releases) and having them all together in a 180g package is even better. Recommended.

This is Shuggie Otis' second album released back in 1972. Apparently, he was barely 16 when this came out, but how do you explain that dirt stache? Or the surely drug-enhanced psychedelic sounds? Stylistically, this album lands equally in between the blues and rock of his first album and dreamy west coast sounds of Inspiration Information. There's some absolute gems on here like the funkidified opener "Ice Cold Daydream"; Shuggie's signature song "Strawberry Letter 23" (original version); blues-funk classic "Me And My Woman" (so robust!); and the epic, 12 minute jazz instrumental title track. Recommended.

First ever vinyl repress of Digable Planet's classic second album! This deluxe limited edition pressing of Blowout Comb comes pressed on thick double vinyl, complete with embossed cover, 18 x 24 fold-out poster, and detailed liner notes by Larry Mizell Jr. The Brooklyn-based rap trio consisting of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler (aka the man behind Shabazz Palaces), Craig "Doodlebug" Irving, and Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira perfected the fusion of jazz and hip hop with 1994's Blowout Comb. Coming right off the heals of their '93 debut Reachin', Blowout found the Planet's honing their craft to perfection and broadening their sound to include guests like Gang Starr’s Guru, Jeru the Damaja, and Jazzy Joyce. The deep rooted jazz vibe stays strong throughout with unfadeable beats sampling many jazz-funk greats (from Roy Ayers, Shuggie Otis, Eddie Harris, Grant Green, and others) plus live sax, vibraphone, and flute instrumentation. Top that with that witty, intelligent flow and you have a sound that has influenced generations of rappers to come. This is jazzy Brooklyn hip-hop at its finest. Recommended.

Deluxe 180g pressing of the classic Beach Boys album. You guy's should already know about this one, but we're gonna give you the original Lab review written by Roctakon just in case... So everybody knows what's up with pretentious rock dudes and Pet Sounds- they love it. It's second only to the Beatles Sgt. Pepper on the Rolling Stone top 500 albums of all time. Rock critics suck, we all know that, and the Rolling Stone top 500? Well, they had one Outkast album on the list and it was Stankonia. Stankonia? The only way to tell is to cop it and decide for yourself. Brian Wilson did everything himself, writing all the songs with Tony Asher (who the fuck is that?) and producing the whole shit. Besides "Kokomo", most of the best Beach boys stuff comes from this album. You got "Sloop John B", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Don't Talk", and "God Only Knows." Seriously, I don't know about how well it was produced or what they did in the studio or why it's one of the greatest albums of all time, I just know it sounds good. Really good. I mean, when I hear this shit I get all misty eyed (not a joke). Perfect for a Sunday morning, a break up, or a sunny car ride. Trust me, put back the Unkle 3 mix cd set and cop the Beach Boys.

What do you do when you've got club night with one of the UK's most celebrated artists and have managed one of dance music's most forward thinking labels? Start your own label, of course! Former R&S Records manager Dan Foat is kicking things off big for his 1-800-Dinosaur label. He's tapped James Blake, who he runs the 1-800-Dinosaur club night with, for the labels first offering. The successful club night has adopted an anything goes policy and the label seems to be following suit. Blake's two tracker sees him drop a dub version of of "Voyeur" from his Overgrown album, along with the brand new production "And Holy Ghost." Where "Voyeur" is ripe for the club, "And Holy Ghost" takes a dip in a completely different pool. Limited edition white vinyl pressing.

Director Joseph Kosinski seems to have a thing for tasking French electronic acts with scoring his movies. The director tapped French touch stalwarts Daft Punk to handle the duties for 2010's Tron: Legacy and turns to M83 for the Oblivion OST. The Tom Cruise vehicle is fittingly soundtracked by the Antibes based Anthony Gonzalez. Absolute epicness seems to have been the call to arms as Gonzalez's synth based tracks seem to reach for the outer edges of the stratosphere. But while they might be stretching for new levels of space exploration, many of the tracks have a retro quality about them. They bring back memories of 80s movies in both structure and timber, with glassy arpeggios providing the momentum. Limited edition 180 gram 2LP housed in a gatefold sleeve.

The dub reggae scene is alive and well in Los Angeles! The long running Dub Club has made its presence felt in the world wide reggae scene. The man behind the club, Tom Chasteen, has teamed up with Jamaican artist Tippa Lee to produce the forthcoming Foundation Come Again. Along with creating some epic rhythms the duo was able to work with many of the dancehall icons that have graced the stage of the celebrated Dub Club. In anticipation of the full length, Chasteen has jumped behind the boards and taken a turn at dubbing out the whole affair in one take, straight to tape. The result is Signs and Wonders in Dub, a master class in dub's limitless possibilities. As much as the skilled selector was able to carve out space within the tunes, he was mindful of the dancers, keeping the rhythm ever present. Limited edition, individually hand screen-printed covers.

Limited edition release documenting Justice's show at Les Arènes de Nînes, July 19th, 2012. It's the thorough packaging you'd expect from Ed Banger. The double vinyl is housed in thick plastic sleeve which holds a grip of artwork, a CD version, and a fold-out poster of Justice and its road crew. If this has been your scene at one moment, it's a great way to mark the time. Pull this shit out when you're grayed and be like: "kids, listen to this crazy stuff your parents did molly to." 13 tracks, several medleys, alternate versions galore, pretty epic.

Start Breaking My Heart is one of those albums that may throw some fans off. For those new to the world of Dan Snaith his debut album is something of an anomaly. The 10 tracks are relatively pure IDM, produced at a skill level high above what you would expect from a debut. It's a far cry from the brazen rhythms and crunchy, processed guitars of the albums that would follow, however it's a gentle reminder that the producer behind Daphni is firmly rooted in electronic production. Snaith shows a keen ear for off kilter loops which he mixes with disjointed rhythms. There is a light touch to nearly everything here, with warm synth pads easing you in and out of the mild cacophony. Acoustic instruments and live drums are woven together with heavily chopped beats. In the very least, Start Breaking My Heart proves to be an enjoyable listen that sheds light on the roots of Dan Snaith's many guises. Limited edition repress housed in a gatefold sleeve with free CD copy of the album.

Dan Snaith has cloaked himself in many guises over the years. When he first appeared as Manitoba, it was with the personal IDM of Start Breaking My Heart. The follow to that album, Up in Flames, threw the previous album's rule book out the window and sounded like the work of someone completely different. The precise electronics were traded in for pounding live drums and screaming guitars awash in noise. With the success of that album came more wide spread exposure and a threat from Handsome Dick Manitoba of the Dictators. Papers were served, a trade infringement lawsuit was threatened, and Caribou was born. The first offering from Snaith's new incarnation was Milk Of Human Kindness. The album follows that path set by Up In Flames but travels further down the psychedelic rabbit hole. The song arrangements are tighter, the individual elements more present and the vocals more pronounced. One thing that remained intact was the pounding, pedal to the metal energy of Up In Flames. And when that translated to two drummers in Caribou's live formation you really got a feeling for what Snaith was on about. Songs with potent dynamics and dramatic builds that smack you across the head once they reach full steam. Limited edition repress housed in a gatefold sleeve with free CD copy of the album.

This might be the sleeper release of Record Store Day 2013. Impeccably compiled and executed, this 10x7" boxset does all the heavy lifting while minding the finer details (includes the download code right on the booklet and a plastic 45 adaptor). If you're looking for ten breaks on 45, you'll need to look elsewhere. This comp focuses on the sweet soul of this Atlantic subsidiary. There's a nice blend of the classic and the rare that will appeal to both the collector and soul appreciator. Recommended.

The long-awaited debut full length from Lapalux is here! And after an initial office listening, we can confirm that it was well worth the wait. Following two critically acclaimed EPs (2012's Some Other Time and When You're Gone), Stuart Howard (aka Lapalux) brings it all together on Nostalchic, a proper album of lush new school beats on Flylo's Brainfeeder imprint. To call this piece of work "next level" would be an understatement. Here Lapalux deftly connects the dots between ambient and glitch, always full of deep texture and atmosphere, all underpinned with carefully programmed beats and vocal samples to produce something uniquely emotive and moving. It is rare to get all these pieces to work together as a whole, but Howard is able to do it with unbelievable skill and prowess (just check how well the vocals and ambience work to create melodies). Check "Iamsys," "Flower," "Straight Over My Head," and "Flower" for a taste, but really the whole thing demands repeat listens. 12 tracks in all pressed on deluxe double 180g white vinyl with stunning die cut sleeve. Recommended.

Watch out fi dis! Major Lazer is back to free the universe! For their sophomore full length, Diplo comes through as solo executive producer to drop heaters all over the place to shake up the sound system. The Major Lazer sound is constantly evolving, but here it's still rooted in heavy dancehall, fused with electro, trap, bounce, and all manner of EDM to mash up the place something proper. We've been jamming the deep vibes of "Get Free" with Amber from Dirty Projectors for a minute now, but check the heavy bumps of "Watch Out For This" with Busy Signal, "Keep Cool" with Shaggy, "Bubble Butt" with Bruno Mars & Tyga, "Jet Blue Jet" with Leftside, GTA, Razz & Biggy, and the jungle influenced "Jah No Partial" with Flux & Pavillion for a taste. You can trust this bangs from beginning to end with other guest spots from Laidback Luke, Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, Elephant Man, The Partysquad and more. For their long awaited 4th studio album (the latest since 2005's Human After All), Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo call in legends of pop music history to help them create their most epic and ambitious work to date. From pioneering hit maker Nile Rodgers and synth icon Giorgio Moroder, to more recent super talents like Pharrell Williams, Panda Bear, and Chilly Gonzalez, Daft taps them all and take their sound to a whole new level with live instrumentation and complex arrangement - an evolution in electronic pop music. The Contemporary Sound of Russia volume 1 pulls together the very best re-edits/reworks from today's top Russian producers (most of whom we've never heard of until now), guaranteed to set the dancefloor on fire. From the deepest disco cuts to funky rarities and beyond, this comp represents the sound of the current Russian disco edit scene with entries from Simple Symmetry, Lesca, Beard In The Dust, Quick Soviet Cuts and more. Check the smooth openers "Let's Love" from Lesca and "Bennie's Deal" from Lay-Far, then get on down to "Burnin Hot" from Arsenii, and the useful Gina X flip from Simple Symmetry. Massive repress! Originally released in on CD 2007, Oramics collected the compositions of former co-founder and director of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Daphne Oram, particularly that of her post BBC experimental work. Designed in 1957, Oramics (along with being the name Oram used to refer to her studio and business interests generally) is a drawn sound technique that involves drawing on 35mm film strips to control the sound produced. Oram further developed the process in 1962 after receiving a grant from the Gulbenkian Foundation. She would draw shapes on the film that would create a mask, which modulated the light received by photocells. Along with developing the instrument and becoming the first woman ever to design and build an electronic musical instrument, Oram produced a large and intriguing body of work. Of course there is her early material for the BBC, but there is much more to it than that. Oramics brings together 44 compositions from the pioneering electronic musician. It is material that is as varied as it is groundbreaking. The pieces range from classic playful interludes and commercial recordings to beautiful, immersive pieces. They all tend to feature her penchant for introspective and multi-layered material that proved that there could be depth in a field that many had yet to master. You can still hear Daphne Oram's influence in music that is being made today. Limited edition clear vinyl 4LP pressing housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve full of archival photographs.

What are you planning to do when you turn 24? What were you doing? Sitting on your couch, playing video games and loading up the four footer? How about Herbie Hancock? He wrote this music and recorded this record when he was 24. Maybe he smoked a little weed, too. If you are trying to impress someone (like yourself), you are doing pretty well to buy Maiden Voyage. Talking about the music on here is like talking about breathing. Yes, it's good – and there's nothing more to say. It captures 5 virtuosic and brilliant musicians at the height of their powers. If you don't know this, or you don't like it, there's just no words really besides I'm sorry. High quality 180 gram pressing, includes free CD of the album as well.

Third studio full length from Mr. Rager himself, Kid Cudi! After killing it with two installments of Man On The Moon and then venturing into rock zones on 2012's WZRD project with Dot Da Genius, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) returns with dark, tripped out raps on Indicud. You already know Kid Cudi flips it on the weird and moody side of things, and here he definitely lives up to his rep with raps AND production (Kid Cudi's on beats!) that only "lonely stoner" could deliver. Kudi impressively handles the production here (with a little help from Hit-Boy and Dot Da Genius on a few tracks), while the list of guest spots range from hyped contemporaries like Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, and King Chip, to rap legends like RZA and Too $hort, and even Michael Bolton(!) on a hook. Highlights include "Just What I Am," "Young Lady," "Solo Dolo Pt. II," "NYC Rage Fest," "Brothers," and "Afterwards." Triple vinyl version housed in gatefold sleeve designed by Kid Kudi himself.

The Scientist got his start working as an engineer for King Tubby. From there he went on to become one of the pioneers of dub reggae along with Tubby. He quickly developed his own style, settling for tracks with an inherent groove while applying the drops and reverb tweaks in all the right places. Scientific Dub is like a journeyman's guide to dub. There's a heavy dose of soulful moments as the roots tracks are fed through the Scientist's mixer. The addition of reggae heavyweights like Sly & Robbie, and Agustus Pablo doesn't hurt either. One of the particular standouts is Scientist's dub of The Tamlins' "Baltimore." All of the tracks are worth turning your attention to, though. A must have release for any reggae fan. Includes the full length album plus two bonus tracks spread across three 10" pieces of vinyl in red, green and gold; housed in full color hinged box secured with a magnetic clasp. Limited to 2,000 copies.

The long-awaited compilation of tracks from left-field disco genius Arthur Russell has finally arrived from Soul Jazz, and despite a few minor reservations that only a confirmed disco nerd like myself could have, it's well worth the wait. Russell was a classically-trained cellist and composer steeped in the American experimental avant-garde tradition of composers like Philip Glass. He made some of the most compelling, challenging, and beautiful dance music ever committed to record after being turned on by visits to NYC clubs like the Loft, Gallery, and Paradise Garage. "Go Bang," recorded as Dinosaur L is present here in the superior Francois mix, is perhaps one of the most simultaneously atonal, dissonant, and funky records to ever become a dancefloor favorite– a maelstrom of near-free jazz dirty Rhodes chords and a driving four to the floor beat propelling ominous, desperate declarations that "I want to see all my friends at once/I wanna go bang!" It was a big Paradise Garage favorite, and its dark, druggy and sexy vibe was hugely influential to early house tracks like Sleazy D's "I've Lost Control." Russell's most well known track, Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face," shouldn't require too much of an introduction here, and if it does, just read my dissertation in the 12" review (I expect your 5-page paper with annotated sources next week, Spasticon). One of the greatest dance records ever, period. What distinguishes Russell as an artist (and further endears him to collectors) is the fact that he was also capable of creating softly beautiful tracks like "Keepin' Up," "In The Light Of The Miracle," and "Let's Go Swimming;" tracks that successfully integrated his interest in dance music with experimental, often minimalist compositions. "In The Light Of The Miracle" is one of the prizes of this collection; originally available on a stupid-rare promo-only pressing, "Miracle" is a serenely gorgeous, airily restrained 13-minute epic that defies categorization or description. Also includes essential, tough–to-find gems like "Pop Your Funk" (see 12" review), and "Wax The Van." The few minor complaints I have (the omission of Russell's first release, "Kiss Me Again" by Dinosaur, lack of material from the rare "World Of Echo" LP, weird track sequencing) are completely mollified by the dearth of brilliant material here, and the sheer value that the collection gives. Highly, highly recommended. 11 tracks spread over 3 LPs.

1981 Post Punk for 2013. The London four piece has been making waves around the world with their aggressive yet catchy tunes recalling your favorite Punk Rock female leads from Siouxsie to Karen. Tribal drumming with jangly guitar riffs and overdriven bass, it's hard not to think back to simpler times of pure, sweaty rock n roll. Fans of Mission of Burma, Jesus Lizard, and The Seconds will find a comfortable home in Silence Yourself. Stand out tracks include "Husbands", "City's Full", and the perfect opener in "Shut Up". Comes in limited edition matte sleeve, pressed on clear vinyl. Recommended.

This is arguably the first house track to be pressed on wax. House pioneer Jesse Saunders used to play Mach's highly influential "On & On" all the time until his copy got stolen. The original "On & On" is a highly sought after 12" released back in 1980 and is one of the earliest blends, putting drops from Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" and Lipps Inc's "Funky Town" over Playback's "Space Invaders" beat. After his copy wen missing, Saunders decided to recreate the track and press it up himself, thus making one of the first house records! Saunders' "On & On" is not necessarily a faithful recreation, but a creative interpolation that went on to birth something entirely new. Peep the vocal drops, 808 programming and crafty synth work to get a taste of what I'm talking about. There's a reason people keep referring to this as the first house track even if it might not be accurate. Limited edition clear vinyl pressing. Recommended.

If there was a mainstay, a workhorse of every chill out, lounge compilation of the late 90s / early 2000s era it was St Germain. The project of Frenchman Ludovic Navarre originally began as part of the early wave of French Touch producers. Over the course of a few EPs Navarre moved from the filtered house that helped spawn the likes of Daft Punk and DJ Falcon towards a more jazz and dub influenced style. House music was still a big part of his 1995 full length, Boulevard, but it was as if he had stumbled on something completely different. Working with live musicians he was able to weave together the disparate strains of jazz and house, and add his contribution to what would become known as acid jazz. Five years later, following a relatively quiet period, St Germain returned with Tourist. Now on Blue Note, with acid jazz in full swing, things were falling into all of the right places. And even though I keep saying acid jazz, please don't take it the wrong way. The material featured on Tourist has aged remarkably well. Far from being the gimmicky sax solo over house beat, the music is produced and arranged with skill. Many of the tracks would not be out of place in a Theo Parrish mix. The opener, "Rose Rouge," sets the stage for everything that is to follow. It takes its time to develop and that is part of the quality of the track. Given the standard that was set with Tourist it is no surprise that it still sounds so good today. Remastered, high quality 180 gram double LP.

Much in the same way that Europeans can get a good idea of Americans by watching "Independence Day," so too can we Americans get a pretty good idea of Germans by watching "Run Lola Run." That whole "we live in a perfect robot society where all the clocks are in sync and we're also kind of stuck-up, but WWII kind of humbled/weirded us out (see also the Japanese)" kind of thing says a lot to those of us who want a quick easy stereotype. Kraftwerk does little to contradict this stereotype, with their obsession of all things modern and machine-based. I'm sure you've heard "Tour De France" at some point in your life by now, so I can't tell you much that you don't already know: heavy breathing, electro boom slaps and an ethereal melody laced on top… kinda like Serge Gainsbourg starring in "Tron." I mention this because 3 years ago I made a tape using the original at 33 over a Bjork remix. Remixing remixes! I was up on that mash-up s*&t way before! Plus I had "Ain't Hard To Tell" over "Close To Me," and Pete said it was "too obvious." Now we sell that ODB mash-up. WTF?!!!). Deluxe heavyweight pressing (feels close to 180g?) including 16 page booklet insert with stills from the Tour De France video.

4th solo album from Leroy Hutson circa 1976 Amongst record aficionados, there's a debate whether Hutson I or II is better, but the general consensus seems to gravitate toward the center: both are brilliant, under-appreciated, and classic (and not available on iTunes or Spotify at the time of this review). My experience with these Hutson albums is that first you'll be awed by moments of musical brain pops, then you realize that it's just continuous soul goodness. There isn't a flat spot to be found, even the sleepy instrumental "Situations" is elevated because of its odd, totally uncommercial placement as the 2nd track in the album. Yeah, after listening tracks "Love The Feeling" and "Don't It Make You Feel Good," it'll make you want to put on your best internet-bought shirt and strut around the neighborhood shopping complex. And as a testament to Hutson's production brilliance, you'll continually find new favorite bridges, breakdowns, and lyric snippets for years to come. 180g pressing, recommended.

Harlem River Drive, although brief in its existence (this is their only LP), was an important part of musical development led by the guidance of Eddie Palmieri. This record is generally known as the first prominent musical fusion of black and latin musicians and art. Eddie enlisted an all star lineup of local New York Latin musicians with prominent jazz musicians (including Bernard Purdie). The album gained fame through the dancefloors with tracks like the monster Idle Hands and Seeds of Life. The title cut, If, and Broken Home have more of a soul tint to them and truly bring out the gut of the project. Very rare in the original (usually goes for over $100), this album has also been accused the familiar tag, but in my opinion, it's the way you listen to it. Although Purdie and the rhythm section shine on the dance tracks, the album functions more as an excellent study of styles with the quality found in the blend and the message. Yada, yada. Feel it. Limited edition 180 gram vinyl.

Over 15 years in the making, MBV is My Bloody Valentine's third album. No need for first person "I have a Loveless tattoo" or post-blog-house journalism piece. Just know that this is good! Or even great. And normally I get a little taken back by expensive vinyl pressings, but I feel like you're getting Kevin Shields' blood mixed into the 180g vinyl. The vinyl was recorded, mixed, and mastered in analogue, why mess it up with some compression? But if you're inclined or lazy, there's a CD version with its own packaging included. Recommended.

Unadulterated. First release from the official imprint of the Dilla estate. This single announces the release of an upcoming lost vocal full-length. These two tracks, recorded in early 2000, were produced by Dilla himself and found on 2" tape shortly after his passing in 2006. This first pressing features clear vinyl and the a Jeff Jank / Mason London sleeve with fold-over plastic sleeve (subsequent pressings will be standard). Recommended.

Super rare early recording of Fela Kuti on limited white vinyl! Live At The Afro Spot In Lagos was recorded in 1966 and offers a rare glimpse at Fela's beginnings with The Koola Lobitos. As the story goes, Fela had spent several years in London (studying medicine then switching to music) before returning to Nigeria to become a radio producer. It was during this time Fela formed his first band the Koola Lobitos, and along with legendary drummer Tony Allen and saxophonist Isaan Olasugba, the group developed a revolutionary new sound that would eventually become afro-beat. 6 tracks total, only 500 copies pressed.

Superb collection of rare spiritual jazz cuts compiled by Jazzman (who else?). Spiritual Jazz Volume 4 focuses on the works of American artists who recorded in Europe during the latter half of the 20th century. The tracks contained within often exchange hands for small fortunes and many have never been reissued before making this a must cop for anyone with more than a passing interest in spiritual jazz. Limited edition reissue of Mayer's major label debut, now on 7" vinyl! This How Do You Do? boxset features the whole album spread across 12 individual 45's, each with the instrumental version (previously unreleased) on the flip and housed in its own pic sleeve. What's more is the all the covers connect within the included plastic display sheet to create a 4 x 3 mosaic! How cool is that?! The whole thing comes neatly packaged in an individually numbered, black on black hard case. Here's what we said about How Do You Do? upon its original release in 2011: After the critically acclaimed A Strange Arrangement, Mayer Hawthorne releases another modern soul/r&b masterpiece.How Do You Do? is a more polished and mature effort, where the Detroit artist explores more of the retro sounds that made him a phenomenon, with a glossy, modern touch. "Finally Falling" is a fun, more uptempo piece of pop-soul with an addictive hook, "Dreaming" showcases a similar lighthearted approach. Limited edition release for Record Store Day 2013! The Roots seminal Things Fall Apart sees it's first proper vinyl release with full cover art. The previous vinyl version came in a plain black sleeve. Here's what O-Dub had to say when we first picked up the album: Hands down, Things Fall Apart is the finest album The Roots have put together. It's not nearly as ambitious as Phrenology, or as electric as the first time you heard Doyouwantmore?, but cut for cut Things Fall Apart comes closest to realizing their vision as a group. It doesn't hurt that it boasts the Erykah Badu collabo, "You Got Me," which did for The Roots what "Killing Me Softly" did for The Fugees. However, we get far more than just one solid crossover hit here. For one, Things Fall Apart is a marvel of sequencing, a skill that not enough rappers learn to master. The record jumps straight out the box by beginning with the old school, jazzy breakbeat science of "Table of Contents, Parts 1 & 2," "The Next Movement" continues the slightly organic feel, mid-tempo flows of Illadelph Halflife, and that vibe continues onto "The Spark," where Dice Raw gets his. Then once you touch "Dynamite," a slinky jazz guitar beauty, the album starts to build its momentum. They hit s*%t off lovely on the very next song, "Without a Doubt," nodding to Schooly D's Philly classic "Saturday Night" long before the Young Gunnaz did. "Ain't Sayin' Nothin' New" throws down more sultry soulfulness only to be followed by the Mos Def/Black Thought pairing of "Double Trouble," rocking the kalimbas for real. This run hits its apogee with "Act Too (Love of My Life)," arguably one of the most beautifullest odes to hip-hop ever. Super-duper mellow, especially compared to the 300 watt heat that preceded it, but "Act Too" offers the perfect cool-down hiatus that you need to refresh. There's still another half dozen or so songs that follow, including "You Got Me," "Adrenaline," and "Don't See Us," but that middle run is the heart of the album and what makes Things Fall Apart such a masterful example of music-making. If you only ever buy one Roots album what you waiting for?
