Livid's Base combines the technology of drum machines and touch screens in a compact, fully customizable controller. At the heart of Base are 32 pressure/velocity sensitive pads with aftertouch, 9 touch sliders, 8 touch-sensitive buttons and 8 momentary buttons to control your set. The controls are fully editable and are illuminated with RGB lights that provide colorful and creative ways to play drums, synths, loops, sequence, change presets and navigate your set. The touch faders offer LED feedback that keep you updated on current values and adapt when you dynamically reassign the faders to your software. In addition, the faders can also deliver a note and velocity when you touch them, potentially acting as a switch for instantly engaging effects, or playing a sound when you touch the fader.

One of the main draws of Base is its fully customizable nature. Everything on the entire unit can be edited and configured via the easy-to-use web-based editor. Throw the editor in a browser and edit all the controls on Base. Choose different fader display modes (walk, fill, eq, and spread), change the velocity sensitivity of the pads, switch buttons from momentary to toggle, customize the colors, and of course, edit the MIDI output. Save settings to the internal memory banks and instantly recall and display the presets with a press of a button. Lastly, Base is made of an all-aluminum body with rubber bezel and consists of no moving parts, making it an extra solid, extra sturdy piece of equipment. Reloop is proud to present its first digital mixing controller designed especially for Serato: Terminal Mix 4. By introducing the Terminal Mix 4, Reloop has broken new ground once again with this fully integrated 4-channel mixer offering a wealth of features, including 3-fold EQ with intelligent kill technique and filter modulation capabilities per channel. Any of the 4 channels can be easily assigned to the crossfader via the controls on the front panel, where you will also be able to adjust the crossfader curve.

In addition to the popular Trax Encoder, the master section is now equipped with four convenient management buttons which allow direct access to playlists, crates or further layout views without the need to touch your laptop. This means a desired track can be located and loaded instantly into any deck via the designated load buttons - a fader start* function can also be activated if desired.

As a further highlight, Reloop has developed brand new ultra-flat aluminium jog platters which with an impressive XXL diameter of 15.5 cm have also been enhanced with a non-slip vinyl-grip coating for even more control over your tracks. With a total of 3 modes (Pitch Bend/Vinyl/Quick Search) it's possible to easily switch between pitch correcting, scratching, or browsing through tracks on the fly. The entire transport section is fully equipped with rubberised buttons which offer a comfortable pressure point whilst also being extremely durable.

The performance section features an extensive 8 button layout which can be utilised over 2 separate layers for true versatility. On the first layer 4 hot cues can be fired off and 4 sample decks can be triggered simultaneously. Depending on the software used, other creative possibilities are available, for example the option of accessing hot cues/samples 5-8 on the second layer - or with future software updates this section can be enhanced even further with brand new performance modes (Cut'n'Slice) for live remixing.

The extensive FX section is equipped with 4 buttons, 3 rotary knobs, and 1 endless encoder to provide even more creative possibilities in the mix. The smart loop section also features 4 independent controls allowing users to quickly set beat-precise loops, adjust the size of the loops and even move the loops whilst in a live situation. Reloop also listened to the requests by many DJs and for the first time has integrated a 14 bit pitch fader with 100mm increments, allowing ultra-precise mixing and blending.

The audio section offers a vast array of connecting possibilities for your master PA (including balanced output jacks), a zone function and a DJ booth system. Also very practical are the 2 headphones connections (6.3 mm & 3.5 mm) which can be adjusted with a 1-band equalizer. A microphone connection with a 1-fold EQ for MCs, hosts or singers has also been integrated and can be adjusted via a flexible routing switching system. Furthermore, it's possible to connect a turntable, CD/MP3 player, or iPhone/iPod to the Aux input which can be routed to the master or even software! The VCI-380 is a robust 2 channel DJ controller from Vestax, specifically designed for use with Serato ITCH. As an upgrade from their previous ITCH controller (the VCI-300), the VCI-380 adds a wealth of new and improved features including touch/velocity sensitive pads for control loops and samples, touch sensitive ribbon strips, high end adjustable jog wheels with embedded LED needle points, and stand alone mixer capabilities for mixing with turntables, CD-Js, or other media players. All this in a sturdy (mostly metal construction), compact unit that can endure the rigors of gigging on the road.

In addition, advanced software and FX control features are embedded into the VCI-380's layout. Reloop is proud to present its first digital mixing controller designed especially for Serato: Terminal Mix 4. By introducing the Terminal Mix 4, Reloop has broken new ground once again with this fully integrated 4-channel mixer offering a wealth of features, including 3-fold EQ with intelligent kill technique and filter modulation capabilities per channel. Any of the 4 channels can be easily assigned to the crossfader via the controls on the front panel, where you will also be able to adjust the crossfader curve.

In addition to the popular Trax Encoder, the master section is now equipped with four convenient management buttons which allow direct access to playlists, crates or further layout views without the need to touch your laptop. This means a desired track can be located and loaded instantly into any deck via the designated load buttons - a fader start* function can also be activated if desired.

As a further highlight, Reloop has developed brand new ultra-flat aluminium jog platters which with an impressive XXL diameter of 15.5 cm have also been enhanced with a non-slip vinyl-grip coating for even more control over your tracks. With a total of 3 modes (Pitch Bend/Vinyl/Quick Search) it's possible to easily switch between pitch correcting, scratching, or browsing through tracks on the fly. With the VCI-400, Vestax has decided to forgo the software specific hardware design and go for the an all-out controller that is fully customizable and works well with all the most popular DJ programs (Traktor, Serato DJ Intro, Virtual DJ, Abelton, DJay, and more). Vestax has definitely shifted the focus to high quality functionality with enough controls and features to accommodate future software updates.

The VCI-400 does an excellent job in delivering both the flashy deluxe features (lighted pad controls, LED channel meters, wide assortment of controls) and the solid foundational features (high quality jog controls, XLR outputs, excellent soundcard). In addition, the design is very intuitive with all the controls placed seemingly perfectly and marked clearly. Although there is a lot going on, it all makes sense like the placement of the tempo controls with the deck select directly underneath.

OUR OPINION

Although the price point may be barrier for the beginner or novice DJ, we can see this being a longtime workhorse for the working DJ. The feature set eliminates the need for MIDI add-ons and with its high-quality soundcard and XLR outputs, you're ready to plug it into a club system. In addition, we just love the true 4 channel layout, the filter knobs, and the layout (it definitely borrows from a traditional turntable-mixer setup).

With the genuine MPC pads and control features - the MPK49 is almost like purchasing an MPC and high-end USB controller keyboard in one (for a very reasonable price). In addition - it has ample assignable controls for even the most demanding producers and knob tweekers and is very well equipped to be rocked in the studio or live performance. All this, plus Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition included makes the MPK-49 a top notch choice for anyone looking for a USB/MIDI controller. Recommended.

The nanoKEY2 features an advanced and up-to-date design. By combining the great-feeling "touch" that Korg has developed for its professional MIDI keyboards and the low-profile "thinness" of recent computer keyboard innovations, the nanoKEY2 provides a superior keyboard response for its class and size. It's designed with ample key width and plenty of space between the keys, reducing the chances of a wrong note. The touch and velocity response have been carefully tuned, as only a manufacturer with Korg's track record and know-how can, ensuring that your expressive performance will be conveyed accurately to your software.

The Octave Shift buttons - borrowed from Korg's MIDI controllers - allow the overall pitch to be shifted four levels, either UP or DOWN, in octave increments. For enhanced performances, the nanoKEY2 also provides Pitch Bend buttons, a Modulation button, and a Sustain button, one that's indispensible for piano or electric piano performance. Dicer always ships in pairs - one for each side. Plug Dicer in, slot it on your turntable/CDJ, and you can instantly set cue points and use them to trigger 'Hot Cues'. Or, flip Dicer into 'Auto-Loop' or 'Loop Roll' modes, to trigger loops, or 'roll' sections of the track to create climaxes, drops and glitchy breaks. Like all nanoSERIES2 controllers, the nanoPAD2 had to be compact, lightweight and sized to work well with any laptop or desktop computer. In addition, the nanoPAD2 also had to pack in 16 great-feeling and dynamic-sensing pads, as well as leaving room for the X-Y touchpad! The Korg nanoPAD2 does all this and more. In fact, there are four banks of pad assignments, providing a total of 64 pad assignments.

The sixteen velocity-sensitive pads provide excellent response to your fingertips, and also realistically convey the playing feel to your sequencer or DAW software, ensuring that your drum parts will be full of life. By switching between the four scenes, you can experience 64 different pad assignments.

The X-Y pad can be used to control multiple synthesizer parameters. In addition, the new "Touch Scale" function lets you intuitively play phrases on the X-Y touchpad, just as on the Kaossilator. You can choose from sixteen different scales, and specify the root key and note range to ensure that your performance stays within your song. A must for keyboard players and producers who want to work with software need to express with real feeling keys. The added features of arpeggiator and memory make this a steal for under $70. Recommended.

While both feature ulra-slim profiles and portability, the LPD8 combines pads AND knobs in one unit (although the knobs are rather short) whereas you would have to buy 2 Nanos (the PAD and KONTROL) to get these features with Korg. It is also slightly shorter than the nanoPAD and features a nice matte finish with rounded corners. Recommended.
