OUR OPINION

The undisputed king of scratch cartridges, the M447 is one of the most reliable and skip-resistant cartridges on the market. When set up properly and broken in, it will stick to the groove better than anything else we've encountered. The proof is in the users, and just about every big name is the scratch dj world swears by the M447. The M44-7 also boasts a very low tracking force, which translates into minimum record wear.

The sound output from the M447 features great bass and a loud 9.5mV output. Overall, you can't do much better than this for DJing purposes. Highly Recommended.

The M44G offers a unique balance of skip resistance and sound quality. For scratching, the performance is very similar to that of the M447, slightly less skip resistant with the same low record wear. However, the M44G offers a more balanced output with better overall sound quality. The output of the M44G is quite a bit lower than the M447, but still comes in at a hefty 6.2mV. The qualities stated make this an excellent choice for club djs.

Shure's monophonic cartridge, specifically designed to play 78rpm records (everything else we carry is designed for 33/45rpm use). 78rpm records demands a different type of cartridge than used for normal 33/45rpm records. Technically, a 33/45rpm cartridge will work, but the different stylus type tends to generate poor sound quality and puts major wear on the records.

OUR OPINION

The SC35C is Shure's classic workhorse, a highly durable cartridge with skip-resistance comparable to the M44G. Before the 44 series came out, everyone was using these and many hip hop djs still swear by them. The sound quality is about the same as the 447 (heavy on bass response), with an output of 5.0mV. They are a bit more rugged than the M44 series, but they also put more wear on your records. An excellent beginner to intermediate choice.

OUR OPINION

Shure's entry into the concorde-style cartridge market. This is the first real competition we've seen to the dominant Ortofon line. The White Label is aimed specifically at today's hybrid club deejays, combining the high grade sound quality demanded for club use with Shure's legendary scratch ability and low record wear. From our testing, we've found that the sound quality is comparable to the Ortofon DJ (blue)cartridge, with an output at 6.0mV, great skip resistance, and a low tracking force for minimal record wear. The white label also makes several new improvements over other concorde-style cartridges. It is the first concord-style cartridge that allows you to adjust stylus overhang (useful for setting up on different turntables), and according to Shure, they have also developed a reliable electrical connection for the part that plugs into your tonearm. This should eliminate the eventual poor connection that may occurs with other concorde-style cartridges. For straight scratching, the M447 is still number one in terms of skip resistance, but the White Label is an excellent combination of club sound quality and scratch ability.

OUR OPINION

Stanton's entry level cartridge which boasts an extremely high output for something in this price range: 10mV, which is about the same as a high end Ortofon. Pretty impressive. It also comes with Stanton's mark of durability (they really do make the most rugged cartridges on the market), which makes this an easy choice for beginners. It comes with a spherical stylus, so scratching is not a problem although the high tracking force will wear your records a bit. You can't beat this for the money though.

Stanton has redesigned their entire line of cartridges, giving them a new look and improving performance with greater tracking ability and less record wear across the entire line. The 500 cartridge remains one of the best cartridge values with an extremely reliable track record. This has been an industry standard for broadcast and club djs for many many years, with a solid construction that can withstand tons of abuse. It has a fairly loud and clear output, and comes recommended for beginners or your back up set.
