Lab Overview

One of the more drone oriented albums from the space rock powerhouse. After the success of 1997's Dots And Loops, Stereolab took a break from releasing records every year. They came back in 1999 with Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night, an album filled with ups and downs, fits and starts. Behind the boards for the recording of the album were Jim O'Rourke (known for his work with Faust, Oval and Sonic Youth) and Tortoise's John McEntire. The results were a mix of 60s jazz, French pop, ambient, and O'Rourke's gorgeous string arrangements. Probably the most notable track is "Come And Play In The Milky Night" which Dilla sampled for Busta Rhymes' "Show Me What You Got." This official 2025 Duophonic reissue comes pressed on double vinyl with a protective PVC outer sleeve and printed inner sleeves. Recommended.

  • black double vinyl pressing (please note: actual pressing color and packaging may differ from mock-up photo)
  • remastered audio
  • housed in PVC outer wallet w/ printed inner sleeves
  • original release year: 1999
  • music label: Duophonic 2025
