LAB REVIEW

The cassette player and recorder from France's We Are Rewind is a strikingly modern iteration of the classic Walkman portable tape player. The weight surprised us - with its all-aluminum casing, it looks and feels like what the first or second generation Walkman might have felt like; probably too big and heavy to keep in your back pocket like the later models, but cool in a retro way, with a hefty build that justifies the price point. It exhibited a much wider playback frequency range than other portable cassette players we tested (30-12.5k Hz versus 40-11k) with less distortion, and the recording function is simple and straightforward (note: record input signal will not be audible from the player's output while recording, but we had no problem monitoring our input directly from the source). Bluetooth output to wireless speakers or headphones is a nice modern feature, making this a versatile and stylish option for adding a cassette player to your home listening setup with a very small footprint.
