Lab Overview

Grooooovy is the first thought that comes to mind when listening to Synthesizer And Percussion, a library record composed by Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett and released in 1974. Meant to be a companion piece to the duo's other synth-based outing Synthesis, this album can be described as a cross between minimal G-funk with hints of early acid house. Not what you would expect just by looking at the cover or reading the most underwhelming blurb on the rear: "This record features the many distinctive sounds of the ARP Synthesizer plus percussion in various moods and tempos." Featuring tons of heavy breaks, this album is ultra-smooth and its difficult to put into words just how much it knocks. From the g-strut beat of "Oddball" to the spacey conga filled "Mile High Swinger (B)" to the funky "Driving Force" this album doesn't hold anything back and shows two master craftsmen at work; I mean, the last 5 songs are synth-only jams that are just ripe for sampling. Remastered from the original master tapes, pressed onto 180g vinyl, and reissued for the first time by Be With Records, this record is not to be missed. 15 tracks in all. Recommended.
