Lab Overview

Effortless styles from Kenny Burrell. This 1965 self-titled album is the seasoned session jazz guitarist's second outing as a leader. It features a mix of musicians from three different sessions recorded March and May of 1956. Notable appearances abound from bassists Paul Chambers and Oscar Pettiford to pianist Tommy Flanagan. The legendary percussionist Candido makes an appearance on the opening song, "Get Happy." The playing is smooth and vocal, showcasing Burrell's ease on the guitar. His cover of the Gershwin's "But Not for Me" is especially sublime. The swinging "Now See How You Are" is pretty irresistible. Cover art by an early career Andy Warhol.
