Scottish soul outpost Athens Of The North follow up their incredible lovers rock covers comp from last year with a much needed part deux! If you love digging for deep 80s digital reggae, you’ve certainly come across your fair share of these sort of cover records - reggae and lovers rock artists covering soul & funk hits of the day. But still, there's just too many essential tunes to be confined to one 2LP set, hence this followup. Just like its predecessor, volume 2 focuses on the rarest (certainly in the States) and sweetest of these R&B covers, specifically the UK lovers rock sound - a principally electronic and bass-heavy strain of reggae layered with a decidedly British R&B singing style. This is 100% killer / no filler, but to get a taste, head straight for Pete Campbell’s version of Simply Red’s “Holding Back The Years.” Other highlights: Chosen Few’s cover of The Whispers’ “Don' Keep Me Waiting,” Fallon Jennings’ “All Night Long” or Derrick Cross’ version of Luther’s eternal “Never Too Much.” Housed in full color gatefold with reproductions of the original 12” artwork and liner notes. Highly recommended!
