It’s been six years since Australia's Hiatus Kaiyote broke out with their previous record Choose Your Weapon. Since then, they’ve been sampled by the likes of Anderson .Paak, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Beyonce, and Jay Z, the members have explored solo ventures, and singer Nai Palm even beat cancer. Now, they’re back with their strongest work yet via Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. On Mood Valiant, the quartet utilize the power of the recording studio significantly more than previous releases. For instance, the track “Get Sun” is layered with luscious strings and horns arranged by Brazilian jazz-funk master Arthur Verocai. There’s also an intensity on the songs “Chivalry Is Not Dead” and “All The Words We Don’t Say” that wasn’t present on previous releases. Perhaps it was due to Palm’s near-death experience, or a bit of FlyLo’s influence seeping in, but it makes “Shaolin Monk Motherfunk” sound tame in comparison. Either way, it’s captivating, powerful, and a welcome return from the hiatus.
