the patented lab review lab informed suggestions
Been waiting on the vinyl of this EP for a couple months now. I had a decidedly New York experience with this one where I was given an advance promo on cd by a very generous Bastard Jazz insider and I was totally into it, but had no way to play it out. Humorously enough, this individual and I were totally bonding at the time about still only using vinyl because we were at a show where the Serato kept glitching and I'm sorry, but a vinyl skip sounds SO much better than a digital glitch on a big system. Anyway, I can finally play these tracks out which is great not only because I love this EP, but also because the songs fill a bpm range and style that is hard to come by. These are basically dubby disco tracks with tough breaks and some southern soul permeating throughout. It's the kind of record you can really use strategically during the night, like you could drop "Disco Illumination" near the beginning of your set to get people open or save it until the end of the night when everyone's gotten their drink on and they're a little too open. "Beats For Mbenga" could be a great transition record between afrobeat and disco or some dubby midtempo stuff. The floating vocals on this one sound really ripe for a hard Fort Knox Five break to come mixing in. "Heat" would be great sandwiched between some Zeb and Jugoe. The title track comes in both dub and vocal version, with the dub making use of the best vocal moments. Once again, Bastard Jazz taking the game into the final two minutes of extra time, lulling their underestimating opponents to sleep, and then burying it like the World Cup finalist(!!!) Italians. Vivere Lungo Bastard Jazz! Forzza Italia!
