Lomo has hit us off with the world's only 35mm camera with a built-in fisheye lens. It sees a sweeping 170-degree view compacting everything around you into a single circular image. Huge depth of field renders both the foreground and background in...   expand review  complete focus and creates great distortion effects. Its premium glass lens offers bright colors and a high contrast. Includes a built-in electronic flash for use day or night and uses normal 35mm film that can be processed anywhere. -the mgmnt

Again a non-lp remix job, this time utilizing some Donald Byrd soul. The Beatminerz on production took the simple obvious shit and flipped it into classic material. Read somewhere that producers would come up to them and be like "damn, wish I...   expand review  flipped that first." Sometimes genius is seeing the obvious. They used to play this track at the old Giant Step parties mixed in the acid jazz beats. Definitely in my top 10 singles of all time. Welcome to Bucktown USA where the weak get dissed everyday. Remix, Instrumental with "Murder MCs" on the flip. -the mgmnt

Daptone sets off their new EVER-SOUL reissue imprint with a pair of 1970 tunes from Hank "Soul Man" Mullen. On the A-side, "He Upset Your Dreams(1)" is a bittersweet uptempo groover with great heartbroke vocals from Hank. Flip it for the soft...   expand review  and mellow "Listen(2)," which makes me think Mr. Mullen coulda been a star if a heart attack hadn't claimed him in his mid-20s. -Larri Byrd

First pressing - pink vinyl! Heartsrevolution returns with their screamer of a single, "C.Y.O.A.," aka "Choose Your Own Adventure," originally released on 10" heart-shaped vinyl. The original(1) is cool and all, but probably too abrasive for most dancefloors -- remixes to the...   expand review  rescue! There's something for everyone here (presuming you like electronic music) - Brodinski(2) gives it a skritchy nu disco workout, Lauren Flax(3) keeps the beat minimal but adds swelling strings, and CFCF(4) stays true to the original with much skronk and distortion. Also includes an acidic mix from Dan Oh(5) and a chopped-up Ed Banger-style version by Lazaro Casanova(6). Nice 8-bit sprite artwork on the pic sleeve by Kate Moross. -Chris Lemon-Red

Now Again

Malcolm Catto is a British musician and deep-funk maniac/ record collector/ DJ who has been spending increasing amounts of time at the trap set in the last couple of years (check his previous MoWax releases). This 12" EP consists of 4 tracks...   expand review  from the fictitious (and x-rated) "Blood's Haul" soundtrack, and accordingly features Catto and the Now Again stable indulging in the expected nasty, dirty throwback funk familiar to fans of labels like Soul Fire. Here though, the distortion-heavy circa-1970 grooves are combined with a kind of wide angle, almost eerie film noir soundtrack vibe, most notably on "The Shadows Of Leaves(1)." "Connie's Thing(2)" plays directly to the obsessions of breakbeat hounds, consisting entirely of loud, flanged-out fatback drums courtesy of Mr. Catto. Flipside continues in a similar vein, with breaks galore on both "Double Dutch(3)" and "Attack Of The Killer Penguins(4)." -gregcaz

Fool's Gold

I'm actually kinda glad this single has taken so long to drop: "Day N Nite(1)" was one of my favorite songs of 2007, but since it's not officially released until... well, right now, I can put it at the top of my...   expand review  2008 lists too! Cudi, along with his man Dot Da Genius on the beat, has crafted one of the best slo-mo stoner rap anthems in recent memory. Not to be outdone, Cudi's labelmate's Jokers of the Scene get this one prepped for the dancefloor with their surging raved out remix(2). The flip features another slumper, "Dat New New(3)," with a nice flow from Cudi and guitar loop / wet drums beat by Dot. This might be my favorite release on Fool's Gold yet. Includes instrumentals for both tracks, plus dirty and clean mixes for "Dat New New." Recommended. -Larri Byrd
