Happy day, it's a new Four Tet (mini) album! Taking a breather from the Steve Reid collabos, Kieren Hebden gets back to what he does best on Ringer with four extended joints of infectious electronics. We'd heard the looping, hypnotic title track(1) and shimmering "Ribbons(2)" on the whitelabel 12", but the the tracks on the second record are really doing the trick right now. "Swimmer(3)" begins with a few minutes of unwavering kick and one-note drone (makes me think of Domino labelmates Clinic), then layers on more lush tones and gentle percussion. And speaking of percussion, fans of the Tet's laptop beats will definitely be feeling "Wing Body Wing(4)," which is almost exclusively dry, clattery beats until the distorted loops bust through at the end. All these tracks clock in at over 5 minutes, most are over 7. Plays at 33.
