OVERVIEW
The "30" Series applies Audio-Technica's premier microphone technologies to the home and project studio. The AT3035 is a basic, single pattern mic designed to loudly and clearly replicate vocal performances and other instruments including drums and guitar.
FEATURES
The AT3035 is a large diaphragm,...
expand review condenser microphone with a fixed cardioid pattern, which makes it ideal for recording vocals and upfront instruments like guitars. Because the 3035 was designed with an extremely wide dynamic range (136dB), it is also suitable for recording all types of frequencies (kick drums for example). The mic's high SPL handling (up to 158dB) means it will except just about any level of sound you put in it. The included lo-cut switch and 10dB pad are features usually restricted to more expensive models; these allow for more control over the mic's overall performance. Also included are a custom shock mount for isolation from outside noise and a soft protective carrying pouch for travel.
OUR OPINION
The AT3035 is a solid choice for those who want a microphone with professional features, but have a limited budget. Audio Technica has a great reputation for offering mics that have unique character (like the 4033). We found this model to be quiet enough to stand up to the high demands of digital recording, while managing to be loud enough that you don't need an expensive preamp to get a good response.

This is the upgraded version of Gemini's popular IKey portable recorder. The IKey can record any line-out audio source onto a USB hard drive, flash drive, or even an Apple iPod, all in real-time. This Plus version offers several impressive enhancements from...
expand review the basic Ikey including: upgraded sound quality options (up to 320 kbps MP3 and WAV), a built-in phono pre-amp for recording directly from a turntable, a new mic input with included stereo mic, a VU meter display for monitoring recording levels, and a headphone output for monitoring.
HOW IT WORKS
The Ikey works without any software. Simply plug in your audio source (mixer, turntable, mic, guitar) into the RCA or mic input, then plug in your hard drive, flash drive, or iPod into the USB output. Press record and the Ikey is activated. If you are recording into your iPod, the resulting audio file will appear as a song in your song list. Recording options include sound quality selector (MP3 128, 192, 256, 320 kbps or WAV), a recording level control, and a line / phone / mic input selector.
The Ikey Plus is completely portable weighing approximately 2 lbs. and measuring approximately 5.5" x 1" x 3.25". It is powered by either (4) AA batteries (not included) or the included power supply.
OUR OPINION
The Ikey is a powerful, portable device for recording DJ sets, samples, and instrument sketches. With its enhanced sound quality, it rivals any portable recorder on the market. It does not include an internal hard drive or playback options, but this is reflected in the very affordable price. The IKey is especially recommended for use with an iPod, which allows for instant playback. -the mgmnt
OVERVIEW
The Aries is a professional condenser microphone designed specifically to capture live vocals with the highest quality. While condenser microphones offer much better responsiveness than dynamic mics, they are usually confined to the studio because their sonic sensitivity is accompanied by handling...
expand review sensitivity. Now M-Audio's proprietary internal shock-mounting technology allows the Aries to deliver studio fidelity while minimizing handling noise and standing up to the rigors of the road and live performance. Use the Aries with confidence either during live performance or recording in the studio.
USES
- record vocals
- live performance
OUR OPINION
The Aries is a great mic option, because it does the job of two separate mics (performance and recording), and performs well in each category. The Aries is especially useful for vocalists (ie hip-hop emcess) that like to hold the mic while recording. M-Audio asks: why settle for the average sonic quality of a dynamic on stage when you can have the superior quality of a condenser? -the mgmnt

The Luna is a large diaphragm condenser mic that is perfectly suited for all-around, entry-level recording. Its large diaphragm capsule and circuit design make it ideal for recording vocals, guitar, piano and other high to mid-range audio sources. M-Audio has earned a...
expand review great reputation for offering competitively priced products with pro features, and the Luna is no exception.
USES
- versatile, entry-level condenser microphone
- recording vocals, guitar, piano and other standard audio sources
FEATURES
The Luna has a fixed cardioid pattern, the standard for vocal microphone design. The audio signal is captured with a large (1.1" diameter) evaporated gold diaphragm and travels through all class-A discrete circuitry and hardware. M-Audio also included a transformer (an essential element of tube circuitry) in the Luna's signal path to give the mic a warmer, "vintage" sound. Operating the mic requires 48v of phantom power (standard for large diaphragm mics), which can be supplied by your preamp or mixing board. The mic's outer shell has a unique, flat, moon-like shape made of double mesh brass. Also included with the Luna are a shock mount and a hard case for storing the mic.
OUR OPINION
There are several competitively priced, Chinese made, large diaphragm microphones similar to the Luna on the market today (ie Studio Projects). M-Audio separates itself from the competition by incorporating advanced American design methods and parts into the Luna. The transformer-based design will give your recordings more character, while maintaining a subtle quality that is never too obtrusive. The Luna can handle all types of audio signals with great results, except extremely low frequencies like a kick drum or bass amp. If you have a beginner/intermediate studio and plan to spend less than $200, the Luna is an easy option. The price point, features, and M-Audio design make this a strong buy for overall value and performance.

For file management and computer connectivity, the Microtrack is heads above DAT machines (the popular choice for mobile recording). You can record both in WAV (up to 24-bit/96kHz) and MP3 formats (320kbps/48kHz). The Microtrack records onto CompactFlash and Microdrive cards (sold separately), and when plugged into your computer, the Microtrack appears as a hard drive for easy file management. The USB connection also charges the internal lithium battery (power plug also included).
The list of features continues with a large digital screen with an interface similar to the iPod (which can be dimmed for discreet use in dark rooms). There are both RCA and 1/8" outputs for monitoring. Connect the RCA outputs to an amp and use the Microtrack for playback, or plug in the included headphones and use it like an iPod. There are separate left and right level controls with peak indicators, and dedicated buttons for record, hold, play, etc. Extras included: earbuds, t-shaped stereo mini-mic, usb cable, usb power supply, protective carrying case and mic pouch as well as editing software.
OUR OPINION
The MicroTrack is small, easy to use, and most importantly, it seamlessly integrates with your computer. Record your DJ set, save it as an MP3, and publish it on your website; or record a live vocal or sample, save it as a WAV, and use it in your production. And with the version II updates, M-Audio just made a good thing even better. Recommended. -the mgmnt

expand review design make it ideal for recording vocals, guitar, piano and other high to mid-range audio sources. In addition, its three-polar patterns make it suitable for a wide range of unusual recording applications. M-Audio has earned a great reputation for offering competitively priced products with pro features and the Solaris is no exception.
USES
- versatile, entry-level, multi-pattern, condenser microphone
- recording vocals, guitar, piano and other standard audio sources from all directions
FEATURES
The Solaris has a three-pattern cardioid design, which makes it like three microphones in one. You can choose between omni (picks up sound equally from all directions), cardiod (only picks up sound from the front) and figure 8 (picks up sound mainly from the front and back). The audio signal is captured with a large (1.1" diameter) evaporated gold diaphragm and travels through all class-A discrete circuitry and hardware. M-Audio also included a transformer (an essential element of tube circuitry) in the Solaris's signal path to give the mic a warmer, "vintage" sound.
Also included on the Solaris is a 10dB switchable attenuation pad (for louder operation level) and a bass cut pad that cuts at 6dB per octave (eliminates hum, rumble and other unwanted low frequencies). Operating the Solaris requires 48v of phantom power (standard for large diaphragm mics), which can be supplied by your preamp or mixing board. The mic's outer shell has a unique, flat, moon-like shape made of double mesh brass. It comes with a shock mount and a hard case for storing the mic.
OUR OPINION
There are several competitively priced, Chinese made, large diaphragm microphones similar to the Solaris on the market today (ie Studio Projects). M-Audio separates itself from the competition by incorporating advanced American design methods and parts into the Solaris. The transformer-based design will give your recordings more character, while maintaining a subtle quality that is never too obtrusive.
There are three main differences between the Solaris and M-Audio's less expensive microphone model, the Luna. First and foremost is the inclusion of multi polar patterns. These allow the user more room for different micing techniques and experimentation. The omni-directional pattern is great for capturing an entire room, while the figure-8 pattern could be used to allow two vocalists to sing into one mic from both sides. Another difference between them is the Solaris' pad switch, which can help to amplify quiet sound sources. Lastly the bass cut can aid in eliminating annoying low-pitch rumbles and other unwanted noises.
Just like the Luna, the Solaris frequency response can handle all types of audio signals with great results, minus extremely low frequencies like a kick drum or bass amp. If you have a beginner/intermediate studio and plan to spend less than $300, the Luna is an easy option. The price point, features, and M-Audio design make this a strong buy for overall value and performance.
