The long-awaited compilation of tracks from left-field disco genius Arthur Russell has finally arrived from Soul Jazz, and despite a few minor reservations that only a confirmed disco nerd like myself could have, it's well worth the wait. Russell was a classically-trained cellist and composer steeped in the American experimental avant-garde tradition of composers like Philip Glass. He made some of the most compelling, challenging, and beautiful dance music ever committed to record after being turned on by visits to NYC clubs like the Loft, Gallery, and Paradise Garage. "Go Bang," recorded as Dinosaur L is present here in the superior Francois mix, is perhaps one of the most simultaneously atonal, dissonant, and funky records to ever become a dancefloor favorite– a maelstrom of near-free jazz dirty Rhodes chords and a driving four to the floor beat propelling ominous, desperate declarations that "I want to see all my friends at once/I wanna go bang!" It was a big Paradise Garage favorite, and its dark, druggy and sexy vibe was hugely influential to early house tracks like Sleazy D's "I've Lost Control." Russell's most well known track, Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face," shouldn't require too much of an introduction here, and if it does, just read my dissertation in the 12" review (I expect your 5-page paper with annotated sources next week, Spasticon). One of the greatest dance records ever, period. What distinguishes Russell as an artist (and further endears him to collectors) is the fact that he was also capable of creating softly beautiful tracks like "Keepin' Up," "In The Light Of The Miracle," and "Let's Go Swimming;" tracks that successfully integrated his interest in dance music with experimental, often minimalist compositions. "In The Light Of The Miracle" is one of the prizes of this collection; originally available on a stupid-rare promo-only pressing, "Miracle" is a serenely gorgeous, airily restrained 13-minute epic that defies categorization or description. Also includes essential, tough–to-find gems like "Pop Your Funk" (see 12" review), and "Wax The Van." The few minor complaints I have (the omission of Russell's first release, "Kiss Me Again" by Dinosaur, lack of material from the rare "World Of Echo" LP, weird track sequencing) are completely mollified by the dearth of brilliant material here, and the sheer value that the collection gives. Highly, highly recommended. 11 tracks spread over 3 LPs.

Funky dancefloor gold from Bohannon repressed!. The cuts on the Me & The Gang EP are surprisingly hard to come by these days, but thankfully they get a proper reissue here complete with remastered sound for extra bump on the dancefloor. Check the massive disco stomp of "Me & The Gang," found here in the rare 12" format - a sure shot dancefloor killer with soulful vocals and a beat that just don't quit. Up next is the floor-filling instrumental disco number "The Groove I Feel," a super infectious groove that you just cannot help but move to, while "Maybe You Can Dance" takes the flip in it's extended 12" promo version - almost 13 minutes of uptempo disco delight. Recommended.

In demand secret weapon of the disco Illuminati! Garalude's "Cero" previously dropped on a limited Japan only release back in 2004 and has been in the hands of only a select few since then. Internasjonal does us all a favor with this massive reissue. "Cero" is a percussive house jam that slowly piles on layers of keyboards and accordion lines until it all builds into a crescendo of sound. It's one of those tracks that is sure to please anyone who's been feeling the recent Four Tet or Daphne sound. Plenty of poly-rhythmic action to keep things moving. On the flip DJ Harvey's sought after remix turns up the Afro-house and adds plenty of Fela inspired horn lines. You can't go wrong with either side of this 12". Recommended.

After years of turning out his sought after edits, Greg Wilson is finally taking his first steps back into record production! Schooled In The Classics has been set up to focus on Wilson's original productions and if this first release is a harbinger of things to come we are in for some serious heat. 2013 marks 30 years from the first time the legendary DJ first foray into production with the Street Sounds UK Electro album. The sound featured on this initial offering is classic New York boogie disco. It's funky but has its sights set on the dancefloor. Classic club material.

The kings of disco sleaze are back! Last we heard from In Flagranti, the boys seemed to be moving towards more of a cosmic tech-house style, but on Best Of Dissimilated By-Products they've returned to their dirty disco roots. This 10 track album is actually a collection of tracks In Flagranti produced back at the end of 2011 as exclusive digital releases which did well at the time, but the resounding response to was - "is this going to be on vinyl?" Just a little over a year later, here it is! Expect these grooves to be jam packed with macho bass lines, funky guitar licks, and stomping drums to work the floor into a sweat and grow some hair on your chest. Comes in sexy pic sleeve as per usual with In Flagranti releases.

Deadstock find! In the midst of PH's spring cleaning frenzy he managed to come across a few copies of this Money Studies release. Lab club jocks Roctakon and DJ Eli split sides on the people's champ Money Lotion, now on its seventh release. Roc reveals two of his highly sweated Material Girl remixes on the A-side, while Eli gently places a Stevie Nicks rework on the b-side altar, complete with drumapella for mix tricks. Super-limited pressing of 500 with silkscreened covers. Recommended.

Kavinsky has spent his career shrouded in mystery. He came to our attention in 2006 as a zombie who had died after crashing his Testarossa 20 years earlier. With the success of Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive Kavinsky reached a wider audience when his Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo produced, Lovefoxxx featuring "Nightcall" became the theme song for the movie. This is all too fitting as his music is inspired by thousands of movies he watched as a young boy. OutRun is Kavinsky's first proper full length, and features reworks of a few previously released tunes as well as a bevy of new material. For those that have been along for the ride since the beginning the themes are familiar, but there are twists and turns that keep the journey more than interesting. From the title itself, which references the Ferrari Testarossa featuring Sega arcade game of the same name, to the heavy Jan Hammer influence OutRun feels like a missing piece of the Kavinsky story. There are some surprising moments such as the Havoc (yes that Havoc) featuring "Suburbia" and the 80s soundtrack anthem "First Blood." Surprising as they may be those songs still fit firmly into the Kavinsky mold. Another chapter in the legacy of a zombie that we are only just getting to know.

The fantastic "Balearic Sound of..." series of 12” compilations from Sunkissed Records is back! Linda Di Franco, one of the undisputed queens of the laidback Mediterranean scene in the early 80s, is featured this time around. The hard to find Sensurround Mix of her Balearic classic, "TV Scene," is a perfect introduction to Linda's cool sexy sound and makes it easy to understand why the original 12" is so in demand. It oozes sultry summery sensuality, topped with some seriously soulful sax. Her gloriously dreamy take on Dusty Springfield's "Look Of Love" follows. On the flip we get the extended 12" mix of "My Boss," highly sought after since being one of the standouts on DJ Harvey's cult Sarcastic mix. And lastly, under-rated album track "Stay," a balmy funk groover given extra sizzle from Ms Di Franco's trademark X-rated breathy vocal performance. A wonderful collection of Balearic moments not to be missed.

Jazzman always seems to unearth those hidden gems that no one else can find! The UK label's latest, Soul Spectrum Records Vol. 1, turns its focus towards rare and obscure dancefloor soul from the late '70s and early '80s. Think deep boogie cuts and soulful disco. The label enlisted Ashley Beedle and Tom Noble to turn their well honed knives on two of the tracks that needed a little fine tuning, but other than that all the tracks a presented in uncut form. It's all compiled by the super dedicated DJ Fryer. Here's what he had to say about Soul Spectrum Records Vol. 1: The endless quest to discover lost interesting music from the past is something of a calling to many. Record collectors and DJs will go without food and spend all their wages to own a single piece of vinyl. Many will travel around the world to towns and cities you would never choose to visit. Happy spending nights in cheap hotels and days in musty old shops looking for that one lucky find, and it does happen, eventually, to all that make the effort. I make no claim to the discovery of any of these records contained here, but I nod my hat to those that did and will again in the future. I have let good as well as rare music be the narrative on this LP. There are some records here that are relatively affordable and I encourage you to go out and find them on original 45s, and play them. Another sought after reissue from the folks at Rush Hour! Ben Cenac might be bast known for his work with Newcleus, but this Sha-Lor track is a NYC garage classic. "I'm In Love" effectively straddles the line between boogie and house, delivering in all the right ways. The A side takes the razor to Mary Wilson's (the other Supreme) 1979 Motown disco number "Red Hot," slowing down the tempo to something sexy and extending the good parts. Reissue of one of the of the most sough-after and influential Detroit dance records from the early 80's. A Number Of Names' "Sharevari" is one of those classic dance records that ends up on everyone's list eventually, yet is frustratingly tough to find on OG press. Originally recorded back in 1981 at the crossroads of disco, new wave, house, and techno - the track fused lo-fi drums, sinister synths, and raw vocals to create a unique and freaky vibe unlike anything else at the time. As the story goes, "Sharevari" is a song about the stylish, forward-thinking Detroit club scene, specifically a club called Charivari (named after a New York clothing store), that laid the groundwork for the techno revolution to come. See the video below for a glimpse into this scene. The track still kills it to this day, and always manages to bring all the real freaks out on the floor! Includes the original vocal version with the instrumental on the flip. Essential.

Phillips hooks it up here in a major way with choice disco 12"s in their full length original form. It doesn't get much better than this! Check tracks from Ron Richardson, Midnight Energy, Billy Frazier, Freeway, State Department, The Underground Band, and many, many others. Even if you could find the original 12"s, gathering all these tracks would cost a small fortune, so get with the double LP comp. 13 tracks in all, recommended.

Afro disco heat reissued! Hot Casa hooks it up once again with another impossible to find Nigerian record, this time from the mighty Kiki Gyan aka Africa's answer to Stevie Wonder. If you've been keeping up with the reissue scene, you've probably seen the recent Kiki Gyan comp on Soundway, but here is the original K.G. LP from 1980 in its original form, complete with full cover reproduction and bonus 7"! Check the 10 and a half minute "Disco Train," a disco stomper of epic proportions, packed with floor filling energy and uplifting EWF vibes. Definitely worth it for this one, but also includes "Loving You" and a Boogie Gentleman edit of "Disco Train" on the included one-sided 45! Limited import pressing, recommended.

Big balearic vibes from DJ Harvey on single sided, laser-etched vinyl! Harvey has a cult following for a reason - his DJ sets are the stuff of legend (if you've been to Sarcastic Disco you know what I'm talking about), and his edit and remix work is impeccable. Here he takes Dr. Beat from San Sebastian's classic early 2000's balearic tune "Mediterraneo" and gives it a 2013 revamp, totally pumping up the drums and adding propulsive synth stabs to keep it moving. Welcome repress of Nite Jewel's full length debut. Nite Jewel has certainly come a long way since 2008's Good Evening, from collaborating with West Coast funk master Dam-Funk to putting out material on Mexican Summer and Italians Do It Better. With her recent material being much more developed and produced, it's cool to see where it all started. Our original review from 2008: Loving the sweet, lo-fi sounds of Nite Jewel. After her release on Italians Do It Better, I was wondering where I was gonna find more from the LA singer/producer/composer. Luckily we got in this LP on Gloriette which seems like a small-press kinda deal that would be pretty hard-to-find. "Good Evening" is part shoe gaze, part new disco, part old school r&b, and part freestyle(?) all composed on a portable 8-track cassette deck with layered tape edits (hence that authentic low tech sound). It's a beautiful thing in these days of over-done tracks. Check the joints that made it to 12" on IDIB ("What Did He Say" and "Let's Go") or go for the deep RnB funk of "Weak For Me," the slow jammy goodness of "Artificial Intelligence," or space-out to the sound of "Suburbia" or "Universal Mind." 10 tracks total now with free MP3 download. Recommended.

Full length debut for Sinkane on DFA!. Though you might not have heard of Ahmed Gallab (aka Sinkane) before, you might've heard him on some records you own. The Brooklyn-based producer/multi-instrumentalist has served as a session musician for bands like Yeasayer, Caribou, Of Montreal, Born Ruffians, and others, and here on Mars, his solo work really takes flight. Impressively, Sinkane plays most of the instruments on the album himself - save for a few guest spots (including a wicked guitar solo from Twin Shadow's George Lewis Jr.) which makes the sound truly his own. It's hard to really pinpoint, but I would describe the sound as a chilled combination of afrobeat, krautrock, jazz fusion, all topped off with a dash of tropical disco. Check "Makin Time," "Jeeper Creeper," and "Runnin" for starters, then dig into deeper cuts like "Caparundi," "Mars," and "Warm Spell." Really refreshing stuff! Comes in matte pic sleeve.

Since the beginning Prins Thomas has always handled his own instrumentation. The idea was always there to bring in other musicians but it never panned out. And you know, when you play music with people it's always better when their your friends or friends of friends. A bunch of musicians jamming and having fun as if nothing else matters but the moment. Well, finally Mr. Thomas was able to pull it off and Prins Thomas Orkester was born. It's your loving cosmic disco prince and his wild band of cohorts making some fantastically interesting treats for your ears! The tracks on the "øving" EP are all reworks of Prins' back catalog tracks, recorded almost live in a maximum of two takes. Pretty impressive for a jam based project. The Orkester tackles "Slangemusikk," "Uggebugg" and "Sauerkraut" from his debut album, and transforms them into "Snake Music," "Hamar Bluesklubb" and "Surkål." And the last track, "Arild Moen," is a new version of the 12" track "Morfar." To top off this orgy of Norwegian disco heads, it's all mixed and massaged by none other than Todd "Terje" Olsen and mastered to perfection by Chris Sansom at Propeller Studios. Just what you and the lady need for these cold winter nights.

Aww snap, Shoes is back! Ya'll already know how the Shoes crew kills it on the edits (see past refixes of Miles Davis, Roy Ayers, Bohannon, etc), but this time they've really outdone themselves by tackling a diverse selection of classic digger cuts and funky anthems. Up first is Skull Snaps' "It's A New Day", a track infamous for its heavily sampled drum break, but Shoes flips it so now the whole track can get some love on the dance floor. Next up, Ray Baretto's "El Bantu" gets chopped and filtered for a slow motion latin stomp, while Manu Dibango's "Wilderness" gets a killer re-work for the afro-disco heads. Lastly, Shoes switches it up on the closer with the heavy blues vibe of John Lee Hooker's "I'm In The Mood" getting a subtle dub out. Don't sleep on this one! Recommended.

Sureshot soul re-works for the dancefloor from GAMM, who else? You can always count on the Swedish label to deliver the funky goods, and this time they've really outdone themselves with a pair of floor fillers courtesy of Revivra aka Estephe & Vulzor. First up is a subtle yet effective rework of Marvin's classic "What's Going On" with added keys and bumped up drums to keep the floor moving, while Crown Heights Affair's "Dreamin' A Dream" gets transformed into a 10+ minute peak time banger on the flip. Top notch stuff, even by GAMM standards. Recommended.

San Francisco's Shock has been one of those bands that I've been meaning to catch live for awhile. If "Heaven" is a sign of things to come, I shouldn't have to wait much longer. The trio of Terri Loewenthal, Michael Taras and Dan Judd, bka Sorcerer and half of Windsurf, turn out a slow burning brand of cosmic disco. It's a sweltering affair that just might get you laid. At the same time "Heaven" is a subtly catchy track. For the single, Voltaire Records enlists the production skills of Beat Broker, Hatchback, and Steve Moore (Lovelock/Zombi). Hatchback's Kind Bud Assist is the most workable of the three, but the others are not to be missed. Recommended.

Third release for RYSQUE Records out of Sacramento, CA. The label specializes in rare vintage boogie and drum machine soul in the same vein as PPU (who distributes their records) and unearths a couple unreleased cassette jams with this pair of joints from the Cali-based Davinity & Timothy Tucker. Apparently the dudes at the Beat Electric blog helped put this one together by befriending Tim Tucker and pestering him to dig up old recordings from the era. Reluctantly Tim dug up some old tapes, and now some 20+ years later we can all enjoy the drum machine soul of "C'Kret" and "Fishnets"! If you dug the lo-fi sound of Dam-Funk's Adolescent Funk, you'll definitely dig this...

Downtown Party Network coming extra schmooove on their debut for Is It Balearic? Recordings. Both of the originals on this 12" are top notch balearic disco groovers ("The Returning" and "Leaving You Ocean") that bring to mind the warm summer breeze (even tho it's NYC winter outside). Check the shimmery synth work on "Leaving You Ocean" and the infectious groove of "The Returning," while Prins Thomas and Time & Space Machine turn up the cosmic vibe into over drive on the remixes. Hard to pick a favorite since everything on here is totally quality and highly playable! Recommended for the cosmic jocks and balearic bros.

Perception Productions was a New York based label that released records from the late 60s through 1974. Their catalog is an eclectic collection of jazz, funk, soul and proto-disco. The label's roster provides a snapshot of the Manhattan black music scene of the period, featuring established greats alongside up and coming acts. Early on they were lucky enough to sign artists like Shirley Horn, James Moody and Dizzy Gillespie. Gillespie released two albums for the label, his label debut The Real Thing funked up the legendary trumpet players sound and put him in more of a contemporary setting. It's a rare groove masterpiece that includes the sought after "Matrix" (sampled most famously by the Beatnuts for their "World's Famous"). Along with breathing new life into the careers of jazz masters, Perception made forays into the world of soul and funk. They signed up Bill Curtis from the Fatback Band and a young producer from Harlem called Patrick Adams. The latter started working with Jon Bartel to produce the funk rock of "Naturally Good" and the break heavy "You've Just Been Bitten." But Adams' greatest moments at the label came with Black Ivory and the influential musical genius of Leroy Burgess. The Black Ivory tracks featured here come from their sophomore album for Today, Don't Turn Around. Bill Curtis and the Fatback Band came up through New York street funk and moved into a more disco informed sound. Their breakthrough came when "Going To See My Baby" was picked out by New York's number one soul DJ Frankie Crocker. From there they went on to release many disco funk hits. Aside from the big artists and producers mentioned above Perception and Today were home to many one off acts as well. Whether it's the Jackson 5 aspirations of the Eight Minutes or the soulful pop of Bobby Rydell, there is plenty of quality material to take in. Thankfully DJ Spinna has done another stellar job for BBE and separated the wheat from the chaff for the rest of us. Recommended.

Two cuts of hard to find modern soul from Luv N' Haight. Betty Padgett came up as part of the South Florida soul scene. After a gig in Ft. Lauderdale soul legend Milton Wright signed her for a record that was released on the obscure Alwa label. "Sugar Daddy" is the choice cut and for good reason. The track has a heavy disco feeling but packs a fair amount of a soulful punch as well. This is helped along by an ultra-tight rhythm section that provides the perfect bed for Padgett's ode to her benevolent benefactor. On the flip is Arthur Foy's "Get Up And Dance." It has enough cosmic weirdness sprinkled throughout to fit within the world of Chocolate Industries' Personal Space. Two quality cuts. Don't sleep!

The third in the popular Disco Not Disco series originally came out on CD years ago and finally gets released on double vinyl! All sorts of leftfield disco rarites, post punk gems, and obscure electro classics get compiled here by Bill Brewster, the co-author of "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life." If you've never read his book, it puts NY's disco boom under a powerful microscope, detailing the makings of the phenomenon. And of course, when you have a new breed of anything, you know there'll be many imitators and mutations. That's just nature of the beast, especially in NYC and thus a sound developed that is "Disco Not Disco." The bands that combine post punk, electro and disco are in the spotlight here, and Brewster's selections frame the spirit of the era so well. For some prime samples, check Delta 5's "Mind Your Own Business," Shriekback's "My Spine Is The Bassline," James White & The Blacks' "Contort Yourself - August Darrell Mix," Kazino's "Binary," Liasons Dangereuses' "Los Ninos Del Parque" and Maximum Joy's "Silent Street / Silent Dub." Driving rhythms, strong vocals, propulsive basslines and stimulating synths can be found of most of these tracks and that's always a recipe for excitement on the dancefloor! It's always exciting to see Rub N Tug remix on a record's spinner. The duo takes Lindstrom's "De Javu" on a night out in NYC, bathes it in a little of Thomas Bullock's mescal and turns it out on the dance floor. There's a little bit of a retro 90s house feel to the affair. On the flip Owen Pallett (bka Final Fantasy) takes "No Release" to its logical Balearic conclusion. The arpeggios get piled on in just the right way. Already getting plenty of play from Lindstrom's fellow Norwegian, Prins Thomas.

Sam Records released a slew of boogie disco hits in the late 70s and early 80s. Run by Sam Weiss (and later his son Michael Weiss, who also headed the seminal 90s house label Nervous Records) the label released music from Gary's Gang, K.I.D., and Leroy Burgess' Convertion amongst others. With Sam Records Extended Play Harmless has paired this amazing back catalog with some of today's brightest producers and remixers in the new disco scene. This is the first volume in the series and features Soul Clap giving Vicky D's classic "The Beat Is Mine" an updated, modern touch-up. Lots of dubbed out percussion, funky bass work, and of course - that killer squiggle synth hook! You also get the deep burning disco stomp of John Davis & Monster Orchestra's "Up Jumped the Devil" as re-worked by 6th Borough Project, and Scandal's "Just Let Me Dance" as twerked by Maxxi Soundsystem for the contemporary dancefloor. Lots of heat on this one!

Lloyd has been keeping busy since the shipset days - from founding the infamous Tiki Disco Parties, to wreaking havoc with the Hardy Boyz, and moving the nightlife elite on the regular at Le Bain. Now with "Go To Sleep," Lloydski steps out with a proper solo 7" showcasing not only his skills on the synths, but on the mic as well. The production takes cues from 80's synth pop and italo with a new school twist, and features a playfully ironic hook for a dance single (“I don’t want to know, I just want to go to sleep”). Debut volume for one of the best (and slept-on) classics mix series around. For those that don't know, Jason Lev is responsible for the excellent Truth Is Light edit series we used to carry back in '09, but waaay before that he was already putting in work for the disco heads with these Sound Of Gold mixes. For volume 1 (originally recorded back in 2001) Lev is basically taking you to disco school here with a stellar selection of deep classics and under-the-radar joints to make the party go off. Features cuts from Brainstorm, Instant Funk, Cerrone, Jimmy Bo Horne, Jakki, One Way, Nancy Martin, Suzy Q, Peter Brown, and many others. You must learn.

Another classic NYC dance edit from the master, Danny Krivit. The Sisters Love’s killer version of Curtis Mayfield’s “Gimme Your Love” was a staple at David Mancuso’s Loft parties, where midtempo, pre-disco soul cuts like this were big. Krivit’s subtle extended edit draws out and doubles the nasty percussion breaks, generally adding more niceness without messing with the structure of the original too much. It’s simply a great, great song that is made even better. Also included on the flip is Krivit’s re-work of “Ask Me” by Ecstasy, Passion and Pain (of “Touch And Go” fame), which is an upbeat disco banger. The skillfull filtering effects on the intro and the break makes you long for the days before the French ruined the filtered sound with their own inept approximation of the live EQing techniques that Chicago and New York DJs pioneered; yeah, I’m hating. Nice loud pressings of both tracks.

Originally rumored to be an unused score for Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive, Johnny Jewel (Glass Candy, Desire, Chromatics) began production for many of the tracks on Themes For An Imaginary Film in 2008. Jewel had been approached by Refn after seeing him perform to compose the score for the movie. However, due to miss-communications and the Hollywood machine the project fell through. Nevertheless Jewel and Nat Walker (Desire, Chromatics) had written a few songs that were intended for the soundtrack, four of which have found their way on to the debut release from their project, Symmetry, along with a myriad of other material. The 37 tracks that make up the album seem to stand apart from whatever imaginary film they were truly for. Obviously and expressly inspired by the film soundtracks and composers of the 1970s, the music evokes many moods and emotional overtones over its two hour running time. Jewel and Walker avoid the pitfalls of making an outright disco soundtrack like Goblin or going the John Carpenter route. Instead they have crafted an album that is uniquely their own with or without the film that never was.

Deluxe reissue of Chromatics' Night Drive now on limited colored vinyl! This 2010 effort really put Chromatics on the map. The cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill(1)" is just an awesome slow burner, while "Healer" and "Tomorrow Is So Far Away" brings the beat to the heat for that extra bump. The killer synthwork from Johnny Jewel paired with Ruth's poetic vocals is seductive and demands multiple listens. And just in case you're not in the mood for words, there's the instrumentals "I Want Your Love" and "Let's Make This A Moment To Remember." Titles sound like Smokey Robinson singles? Not quite, but they are smokey for sure. Also check out "Circled Sun," a hypnotic nu disco track built on subtle layers of guitar, synths, and drums that's full of that after-hours vibe prevalent throughout the album. Double LP, comes with free MP3 download. Highly Recommended.

It's kind of freaky how James Murphy gets better with every album. With every song and every release, he manages to out do whatever preceded it and 2010's This Is Happening is absolutely solid, from front to back. It's only 9 tracks, but they're lengthy and it clocks in at about an hour in total jamming time. From the chugging rock on "Drunk Girls," to the sublime new wave confessional "I Can Change," to the stream of consciousness disco that is "Pow Pow," you can be sure the LCD sound will keep you rockin'. You could (you should) click on any of these audio previews and hear an awesome track, there's seriously no filler here! High quality double LP reissue, released as part of the Electrospective series. Extra recommended.

Fourth installment of the popular Ron Hardy Edits series on CD! Heads should know the deal, but here's a primer for those who don't know: Ron Hardy is a hugely influential DJ, up there with Levan and Mancuso, who helped usher in the era of House music at the Muzic Box in Chicago (where he was resident from '82-'86) and the current re-edit craze. His sets are the stuff of legend as he would mix everything from disco, soul, new wave, EBM, and proto-house music together in a way that would make everybody lose it on the floor - often times playing his own edits off a Reel-To-Reel player! Many consider those edits as secret weapons for the dance floor and recently a few have been popping up on bootleg 12"s, but this is the first time a whole bunch of them have been compiled on CD. Lots of interesting tidbits about this record, but lets start with the music. DUMP is the solo side project from James Mcnew, bass player of Yo La Tengo. For "NYC Tonight," McNew brings back that '79 disco vibe and lays it on a cover of the GG Allin (aka "the most spectacular degenerate in rock & roll history") song of the same name. Quite a feat, but he totally makes it work! The track will easily get itself stuck in your head with it's catchy laidback lyrics, swingy melodies, and subtle-y stomping disco beat. Flip side features a collab remix by Shitaro Sakamoto (ex-Yura-Yura Teikoku) with instrumentals for both. Pressed up in SAM style disco sleeve with free MP3 download.
