LAB REVIEW

With the VCI-400, Vestax has decided to forgo the software specific hardware design and go for the an all-out controller that is fully customizable and works well with all the most popular DJ programs (Traktor, Serato DJ Intro, Virtual DJ, Abelton, DJay, and more). Vestax has definitely shifted the focus to high quality functionality with enough controls and features to accommodate future software updates.

The VCI-400 does an excellent job in delivering both the flashy deluxe features (lighted pad controls, LED channel meters, wide assortment of controls) and the solid foundational features (high quality jog controls, XLR outputs, excellent soundcard). In addition, the design is very intuitive with all the controls placed seemingly perfectly and marked clearly. Although there is a lot going on, it all makes sense like the placement of the tempo controls with the deck select directly underneath.

OUR OPINION

Although the price point may be barrier for the beginner or novice DJ, we can see this being a longtime workhorse for the working DJ. The feature set eliminates the need for MIDI add-ons and with its high-quality soundcard and XLR outputs, you're ready to plug it into a club system. In addition, we just love the true 4 channel layout, the filter knobs, and the layout (it definitely borrows from a traditional turntable-mixer setup).

Developed with Serato, this palm-sized cue point and looping controller has been designed to fit exactly where you need it: on your turntables, CDJs, mixer or laptop. Dicer always ships in pairs - one for each side. Plug Dicer in, slot it on your turntable/CDJ, and you can instantly set cue points and use them to trigger 'Hot Cues'. Multitude of Effects

The DJM-900nexus follows Pioneer's traditional control layout enabling an easy transition to the mixer. As with other Pioneer mixers, the DJM-900nexus features a variety of advanced sound effects that allow DJs to have more creative expressions while mixing their music. Three new Sound Color FX, two Beat Effects and an X-Pad control were added to the mixer to enhance the user's performance.

Sound Quality

Part of the DJM-900nexus's design attribute is combining functionality with great sound quality. The mixer utilizes high quality components that ensure the best possible audio output when connected to other components.

• Built-in 24bit/96kHz High Performance USB Sound card - Pioneer developed an onboard USB sound card that can simultaneously handle input and output audio signals from up to four (4) stereo sources through a single USB port1. The sound card supports 24-bit/96kHz high resolution signal processing, and can input and output all audio signals with no degradation of sound quality. Once connected to a PC or Mac, the settings utility tool can be used to customize the mixer's output signal path to suit various purposes, such as DJ play, song recording or production2. Furthermore, smooth transfers between DJs are possible with the easily accessible USB ports on the top surface of the mixer.

Native Instruments Audio 2 interface was already our bestselling 2 channel DJ audio interface. However, Native Instruments recently added its industry standard Traktor Pro DJ software to the Audio 2 without effecting the price (an amazing $99). The combination of the two components allows you to DJ completely on your computer or using your computer and a controller.

HOW IT WORKS

The Audio 2 interface has (2) 1/4" outputs and (1) USB input. If you are performing computer based DJing, you would plug the USB port to your computer; plug (1) output to your audio output (stereo); and (1) output for headphone monitoring. When using a controller, you would plug the two outputs into the separate channels of the controller and use the headphone output on the controller. The Traktor DJ software will work seamlessly with either setup (however, if you're using a controller, make sure it has Traktor mapping).

RECOMMENDED CONTROLLER

Many Traktor Audio 2 users are using Native Instruments Kontrol X1 in their setup as a controller. These users are generally ones that don't want all the controls and bulk of standard DJ controller, but want the basic tactile controls to cue, play songs, and control EQs. The Kontrol X1 features plug and play capability with the Traktor Audio 2 which means easy setup, intuitive controls, and instant control mapping. The S4 emulates asuper-deluxe traditional DJ setup: 4 channel mixer, electromagnetic jog wheels, numerous control knobs, and a perfected, intuitive design.
