OUR OPINION

The undisputed king of scratch cartridges, the M447 is one of the most reliable and skip-resistant cartridges on the market. When set up properly and broken in, it will stick to the groove better than anything else we've encountered. The proof is in the users, and just about every big name is the scratch dj world swears by the M447. The M44-7 also boasts a very low tracking force, which translates into minimum record wear.

The sound output from the M447 features great bass and a loud 9.5mV output. Overall, you can't do much better than this for DJing purposes. Highly Recommended.

The M44G offers a unique balance of skip resistance and sound quality. For scratching, the performance is very similar to that of the M447, slightly less skip resistant with the same low record wear. However, the M44G offers a more balanced output with better overall sound quality. The output of the M44G is quite a bit lower than the M447, but still comes in at a hefty 6.2mV. The qualities stated make this an excellent choice for club djs.

Another improvement is the one-sided detachable cord, which eliminates a major source of headphone breakage and repair. The Technics 1200MK2 has been the industry standard for 25+ years. The Technics 1200 remains the preferred choice for all types of djing.

FEATURES

This is the turntable that first established the type of high torque (motor strength), accurate pitch (speed control), quality tone arm (aids in skip resistance), and superior sound that is required by djs; and after 25+ years it is still the standard by which all other turntables are judged. Every other turntable that has come since has patterned their design off this legendary piece of equipment, and the reason is simple: the 1200MK2 is about as close to perfection as you can get with a piece of machinery. It functions beautifully and the durability and construction are unmatched. The body and major components are made of steel. The bottom of the body is made of a dense rubber that eliminates distortion and feedback and adds extra weight for stability. Most of the basic parts are readily available and user replaceable.

MK2 vs. MK5

The differences between the MK2 and the newer MK5 versions are fairly minor and mostly aesthetic. They are as follows: the MK2 still has the "click" at zero on the pitch control;  the MK5 has a protected, inset on/off switch; the MK5 has an extra tonearm adjustment knob; the MK5 includes a slipmat; and the MK2 includes dust cover hinges. Other than that, they perform identically.

OUR OPINION

Our #1 recommendation. There is simply no replacement for a Technics 1200 turntable, and it's almost cooler to have this original MK2 model, without the unnecessary "new features" of the newer M3D and MK5 models. Regardless of model number, Technics still makes the best turntable available, and they are used in 99% of all venues. Resale value is also very high. Some newer turntables may have more features, but this is the superior overall product. When you use a 1200, you know you are using the best.

The Handy Trax is a well thought-out machine, designed with input from collectors and djs. As a result, it is easy to use, surprisingly durable, and has a host of sensible features. For most, the top feature will be the powerful, full sounding stereo headphone output. It's plenty loud enough and sound quality will not have you second guessing what the record "really sounds like." Headphones get an A+. You can also plug the Handy Trax into your receiver or stereo system with its standard RCA outs, so it's possible to double as a home unit. Listening on the built-in speaker is definitely a last resort, but even that is good enough to fill up a small space like a bedroom. Other functions include a strong pitch control knob and effective tone control (just low/high, but it's enough to remove scratchy hiss). The Handy Trax also features a 3.5mm input which allows you to play another source through the turntable's speaker. It is powered either by an included, detachable power plug or six "D" batteries. This upgraded model also features USB connectivity so you can rip vinyl direct to your computer.

OVERVIEW

The VMC-002XLu is the upgraded version of the popular (and now discontinued) VMC-002XL mixer. This new version gets a sleek black finish and adds a USB port for easy connectivity to your computer. It features a simple, durable 2 channel design, upgradable crossfader, and XLR outputs that get you professional level connectivity at a very inexpensive price. 

FEATURES

The VMC-002XLu is your basic entry level, 2 channel mixer, beefed up in terms of sound quality and durability and now the addition of a USB port. The USB port is a great since you can bypass the need for an interface and record vinyl or mixes directly into your computer (recording software needed). It has 2 phono and 2 line inputs (channel 1 and channel 2), plus 1 microphone input with volume control. Each channel has trim adjustment and 3 band EQs that go from completely off (kill) to +6dB. The crossfader is an ALPS fader (upgradeable to the CF-PCV) with a curve control switch on the front panel for "soft" or "sharp" crossfading. It also has a master/cue mix knob so you can practice in the headphones. As mentioned before, one of the main attractions of this mixer is the option for professional XLR outputs, which allow you to send a higher quality signal to any piece of equipment. The VMC-002XL also offers a standard RCA out, which you could use for your "record" out. 

OPINION

The VMC-002XL gives you excellent mid-level quality and features at a very economical price. It's an ideal choice for most non-club situations (home and small studio), and with its three band EQs and XLR outs could even be used in a club if you were in a pinch. Its compact size won't take up too much space, and it has all the necessary features for most djs (and digital DJs now with the addition of a USB port). Scratch DJs will like possibility of upgrading to a PCV crossfader and there really isn't much more you can ask for at this price range. Recommended.
