OUR OPINION

Finally, here's a viable, cost-effective alternative to the Technics 1200 (which is now discontinued). Audio-Technica has always been known for their turntables and turntable accessories, but this is their first turntable specifically designed for DJing. In terms of base features that are key for DJing, the AT-LP1240-USB hits all necessary marks: solid construction, powerful motor, accurate pitch / speed control, and a skip resistant tonearm. Check out the video below for our test of these features. The AT-LP1240-USB will definitely meet your DJ needs whether you are just beat match mixing or scratching doubles.

The key to AT-LP1240-USB's design is that it borrows its key functionality and design from the Technics 1200. The cast metal platter and rubberized base give the turntable that essential "heaviness feel". Even the black gloss finish seems more solid than the standard plastic top turntable faceplate. The high-torque motor rivals the force of the 1200, and the adjustable tonearm features similar controls (tracking weight, anti-skate, height adjustment) to the 1200. The quartz lock button is a popular feature borrowed from the 1200 MK5 model.

In addition, the AT-LP1240-USB includes many deluxe features that you will not find on the Technics 1200. The USB output and built-in pre-amplifier are excellent features for those who are ripping vinyl. The removable cords and under-platter closed design address some of the 1200's biggest flaws. The reverse play, dual start / stop buttons, and start / stop controls will appeal to DJs that need more control.

Is the AT-LP1240-USB as good as the Technics 1200? The AT-LP1240-USB is a viable alternative to 1200 for DJ usage, however, it is not in the top class of the 1200. The HDJ-1000 headphones come in two new colors - black and gold. To obtain the best audio reproduction possible, the drivers in the HDJ-1000 headphones were tuned to deliver more impact in the lower bass frequencies of music. Its thick 38 micrometers diaphragm and 1.5 mm voice coil are more efficient in generating the critical midrange and mid-bass frequencies in music and produce a more linear response even at high volume levels.

The mono/stereo selector circuit was modified to obtain clearer playback, especially in the midrange frequencies. The S-DJ05 Active Reference Monitoring Speakers are designed for DJing and music production. These speakers feature excellent sound quality, audio parameter control, built-in linear equalization and four switchable inputs, useful for DJs and producers who need to achieve the highest accuracy in musical reproduction. In addition, the S-DJ05 speakers offer users the ability to change settings such as sound characteristics and audio inputs via a unique manual controller.

Audio Quality

The compact speakers achieve a larger than normal listening area due to the use of a curved waveguide enclosure that directs the soft-dome tweeter's sound in a wider pattern for better imaging and staging. First and foremost this controller is perfectly matched to the vast operation of Native Instruments' Traktor PRO and its 4 decks. However, the Jockey 3 is ideally applicable with any other MIDI compatible software, e.g. Virtual DJ.

The ample layout which is optimized for the ergonomic operation methods of DJs, offers intuitive control for a fast and secure performance without the need to touch a computer. The deck-control section is amply equipped and offers ideal control of all advanced functions for perfect digital DJing with up to 4 virtual decks. This is the updated MKII version. The main differences between MKI and MKII are the addition of the built-in 2 in/4 out audio interface (which eliminates the need for additional interfaces and allows for addition of CD players, turntables, samplers and effects to your DJ setup), 4 deck control, and larger, tension adjustable JOG wheels. Additional upgrades include a new multi-function joystick for quick and easy searching and loading of tracks, more MIDI assignable parameters (128 total), new ergonomic knobs, and a new symmetrical control layout. These upgrades make the VCI-100 almost on par with the VCI-300, but includes Traktor LE instead of Serato Itch and lacks mic input and 1/4" outs. OUR OPINION

If you want a controller that FEELS like a real mixer, you can't beat the VCM-600. While most other controllers may feel too light, plastic-y, or empty, the VCM-600 is solid and performs like a champ with its authentic Vestax parts. While it lacks a large launch button matrix, the traditional mixer layout that matches the Ableton screen will appeal to DJs/Producers looking for a controller that performs great for multitrack mixing. Combined with the included Ableton Live Lite software, the VCM-600 is an excellent all-in-one choice.
