In 1968, Terry Riley created one of the first "remixes" known by reworking "You're No Good" by the Harvey Averne Dozen. About Group, a quartet consisting of Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor, drummer Charles Hayward, Guitarist John Cooxon, and Keyboardist Pat Thomas, covers the latin soul number for its lead single, and it enlists two producers to remix it. Theo Parrish's "Translation" consists of a shuffling house groove and new vocals as well as space-y noises that are in line with Terry Riley's noise-funk version, while Mokmix introduces thumping kick drums to little snippets of the original (About Group cover, not the harvey Averne Dozen original) for a minimally-produced dancefloor workout.

The TMA-1 Studio Headphones are based on our most popular and bestselling DJ headphone, the TMA-1 DJ Headphones. The Studio model takes all the proven strengths of the TMA-1 and adds the studio monitor functionality. The two main features of a quality studio monitor are comfort (for long critical listening sessions) and a neutral / flat sound output (we'll explain this later in review). In terms of comfort, the Studios feature enlarged, over-the-ear ear cups that come in both foam and synthetic leather. The foam ear cups are better for sound isolation, while the synthetic leather ones give you a bit more comfort. In terms of sound response, the Studios deliver a quality flat output, meaning the sound is equally balanced between low, mid, and high frequencies. When you create music, you want to make sure your sound is flat to ensure it sounds good on all systems. Think of it as the baseline, so when someone plays your song on a boombox or a high end stereo system, your sound will be balanced (the user can always up the bass or treble).

What does a flat response actually sound like? In terms of the TMA-1 Studios, for everyday usage you probably won't notice the difference. In fact, the Studios will sound crisp and clear, much better than most standard headphones out there. OUR OPINION

Finally, here's a viable, cost-effective alternative to the Technics 1200 (which is now discontinued). Audio-Technica has always been known for their turntables and turntable accessories, but this is their first turntable specifically designed for DJing. In terms of base features that are key for DJing, the AT-LP1240-USB hits all necessary marks: solid construction, powerful motor, accurate pitch / speed control, and a skip resistant tonearm. Check out the video below for our test of these features. The AT-LP1240-USB will definitely meet your DJ needs whether you are just beat match mixing or scratching doubles.

The key to AT-LP1240-USB's design is that it borrows its key functionality and design from the Technics 1200. The cast metal platter and rubberized base give the turntable that essential "heaviness feel". Even the black gloss finish seems more solid than the standard plastic top turntable faceplate. The high-torque motor rivals the force of the 1200, and the adjustable tonearm features similar controls (tracking weight, anti-skate, height adjustment) to the 1200. The quartz lock button is a popular feature borrowed from the 1200 MK5 model.

In addition, the AT-LP1240-USB includes many deluxe features that you will not find on the Technics 1200. The USB output and built-in pre-amplifier are excellent features for those who are ripping vinyl. The removable cords and under-platter closed design address some of the 1200's biggest flaws. The reverse play, dual start / stop buttons, and start / stop controls will appeal to DJs that need more control.

Is the AT-LP1240-USB as good as the Technics 1200? The AT-LP1240-USB is a viable alternative to 1200 for DJ usage, however, it is not in the top class of the 1200. Cult faves Chateau Flight (I:Cube and Gilbert Cohen) are back after a lengthy hiatus (last release was on Innervisions back in 06?). They make an emphatic return statement with this 45rpm one-sided release (it's like saying "we don't need remixes, check the madness"). "Chichi Devils" with its repetitive beauty is a secret weapon vampire track that you can throw into your minimal / techno sets... or throw it into your dark disco sets for a change of texture. Recommended.

In conjunction with Disco Unusual Social Club, a "moving dirty disco party that takes house and disco heads on a musical adventure that's full of Studio 54 glam and old-school chicago house music energy, 101 Apparel produces an awesome line of t-shirts paying homage to underground disco as well as the late 70s and 80s styles. Bumbleebee Unlimited, a studio concept created by Gregory Carmichael and Patrick Adams, fused energetic Disco beats with sped-up vocals (to suggest singing bugs), and songs like "I Got A Big Bee" and "Lady Bug" are "enduring staples in the underground Disco & House scene." 100% cotton, made in USA.

Referring to the title of his new full-length, Daedelus explains "I not only intended as a reflection of the LP itself, but also an outlook on life." In his career as a musician, he has never settled for the "drab factory pre-sets of genre," and this album is full of experimental beats that are custom-made to his envelope-pushing tastes. Just take a look at the guest list - Inara George (The Birds and The Bee) to Baths to Bilal. They provide diverse vocals over sometimes wobble bottomed, sometimes woozy psychedelia-laced, and other times melancholic and melody driven instrumentals that consist of complex and deep layers of sounds. From one track to the next, nothing remains same or ordinary, but Bespoke as a whole comes together and "fits perfectly," a testament to the genius of Daedelus. Truly some mind-blowing stuff here - for picks, check out "Overwhelmed," "One And Lonely," "Tailor-Made," "What Can You Do?," and "French Cuffs."

Daz-I-Kue's top notch Bloodfire remix series hits crazy eight with this remix of Creative Source's "Good Lovin." Unlike simple cut and paste edits, Daz always goes the extra distance in the studio, creating lasting, alternate versions full of bump and body. Gotta love the combo of the original, bubbling bassline and the new, enhanced drums. As is the usual with the Bloodfire series, Daz-I-Kue lets loose on the b-side dub version, flexing his remix skills further. Limited press as always, recommended.

For his fourth studio album, DJ Shadow explores a wide range of genres. Alongside the familiar cut-and-paste hip-hop/beats tracks, he ventures into metal, folk, blues, and more. The result is a mixtape-like album that hits on many levels, and despite the variety of ideas thrown into the mix, The Less You Know, the Better in its entirety come sounding coherent and articulate. For picks, check out the simple and beautiful "Sad and Lonely," or the energetic, rocking "Border Crossing" ("I Gotta Rokk" also great on that rock note). The Bob Dylan-esque "I've Been trying" also stands out, as does "Scale It Back," a track featuring Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano. Another highlight of the album is "Stay The Course" featuring Talib Kweli and Posdnuos of De La, a funkly, shuffling beat-driven hip-hop tune with the mcs trading quality verses.

Impressive debut release from Drive Me Home on Citinite. Though this is the first we've heard from Drive Me Home, the high production value and slick arrangement make me feel like this is an alias for a producer we've heard from before or DMH has been doing this for a while. Just check the prime 80's r&b funk style on "Fast Life" with Olivier Daysoul (the vocalist from Onra's "Long Distance") rocking a very convincing Rick James vocal style. So good! But the funk doesn't stop there, on "Blah Blah Blah" DMH teams up with South African hip hoppers Spoek Mathambo and Riky Rick for a piece on futuristic disco rap, while "Hook It Up" and "Don't Play Around With That" show he can rock the spot instrumental style as well. For remixes, Machinedrum gives "Blah Blah Blah" a brilliant uptempo house rework and Computer Jay shoots "Fast Lane" up with some of that gangster-ish Master Blazter funk on the "Skeezer Mix". "Mayor" was one of the many standouts on Mount Kimbie's awesome debut full length Crooks & Lovers. It is easily one of the most play-out-able joints on the album with a unique blend of future soul & funk on a very forward rhythm. Killer track that isn't afraid to push boundries. The flipside is balanced out with "Would Know," more of a mellow, introspective affair, but still features a very progressive edge. Recommended.

Night Slugs co-founder and Mad Decent representer L-Vis 1990 lends his touch to Mr Mageeka's "Different Lekstrix. The original track is a minimalist UK Funky jacker with hypnotic synths and abstract bass bloops to move the crowd, but L-Vis turns up the intensity adding some heavy wonk to tear down the walls. Another winner from Numbers! Plays at 45.

Since its initial release, the Traktor Kontrol S4 has quickly become the standard for high-end DJ controllers. The S4 emulates asuper-deluxe traditional DJ setup: 4 channel mixer, electromagnetic jog wheels, numerous control knobs, and a perfected, intuitive design. Welcome repress of Nite Jewel's full length debut. Nite Jewel has certainly come a long way since 2008's Good Evening, from collaborating with West Coast funk master Dam-Funk to putting out material on Mexican Summer and Italians Do It Better. With her recent material being much more developed and produced, it's cool to see where it all started. Our original review from 2008: Loving the sweet, lo-fi sounds of Nite Jewel. After her release on Italians Do It Better, I was wondering where I was gonna find more from the LA singer/producer/composer. Luckily we got in this LP on Gloriette which seems like a small-press kinda deal that would be pretty hard-to-find. "Good Evening" is part shoe gaze, part new disco, part old school r&b, and part freestyle(?) all composed on a portable 8-track cassette deck with layered tape edits (hence that authentic low tech sound). It's a beautiful thing in these days of over-done tracks. Check the joints that made it to 12" on IDIB ("What Did He Say" and "Let's Go") or go for the deep RnB funk of "Weak For Me," the slow jammy goodness of "Artificial Intelligence," or space-out to the sound of "Suburbia" or "Universal Mind." 10 tracks total now with free MP3 download. Recommended.
