Limited edition 150 gram vinyl pressing for Record Store Day 2013! Codeine's What About The Lonely captures the band at the height of their career. Recorded direct from the mixing board at a stop on Codeine's November 1993 swing through the Midwest opening for Mazzy Star, the album finds the trio of Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Doug Scharin running through their hits at Chicago's notorious Lounge Ax for a crowd of chatty 120 Minutes fans. Gastr Del Sol's David Grubbs joins for two songs on guitar, slinking on and off the two foot stage with little fanfare, but leaving an indelible mark on the performance.

Classico. I knew I had to review this, so I went back home and gave it a full listen with headphone level at damaging levels. I forgot how generally awesome this whole album was. They invented and perfected the mix of stoner anthems and jump-up gangsta tracks. I love how Muggs takes classic drum loops and squeezes the most out of them… a master of drum enhancement. If this was a part of your life in the distant past, you'll be instantly warped back in time with the opening quartet of "I Wanna Get High, I Ain't Goin Out Like That, Insane In The Brain," and "When The Ish Goes Down." High quality double 180 vinyl NUMBERED gatefold edition for Record Store Day 2013.

Destroyer's first release for Merge Records was a divisive point in front man Dan Bejar's career. Following the success of Streethawk: A Seduction, the Canadian moved from the Emeryville, CA based indie imprint Misra Records to North Carolina's powerhouse Merge. At the same time he moved from Vancouver, BC to the tranquil environs of Montreal. The results were a departure from the previous album's concise statements. This Night delivers a song cycle that is altogether anthemic and symphonic. And while it may not hit you in the gut at first blush, it's a release that grows on you and has stood up to the test of time.

When those first Wu-Tang covers 7"s dropped, it was definitely a lightbulb moment for the El Michels Affair. The response was rabid (we moved hundreds of those records) while the diehard fans demanded more. Nearly three years later, the Shaolin project is complete in form of this full length. In addition to the versions from Enter The Wu-Tang (CREAM, Da Mystery Of Chessboxin (so wicked), Can It Be All So Simple, Bring Da Ruckus," and "Protect Ya Neck"), the crew has picked some of their favorite solo Wu moments including "Cherchez, Incarcerated Scarfaces, Shimmy Shimmy," and others. Also look out for the hidden 37th chamber. Meticulous execution as usual, highly recommended.

Here is what they have to say about this stellar release: The first volley in our massive Unwound reissue campaign lands as Big Baby, a previously unreleased album's worth of material that the band cut in 1990 while still students at Tumwater High, operating as a trio under the Giant Henry moniker. "Tumwater High has always been known as a 'redneck' school," guitarist/vocalist Justin Trosper reflects in the album's liner notes. "People took football and AC/DC equally seriously. The smoking area was rich in facial hair. We were into punk rock, but we weren't really 'punk.' We thought punk was funny. After all this was the late '80s. Post-punk was a memory, and everything was totally damaged and weird. We were kind of more with the times than the catalog-punks with mohawks and bondage pants." Recorded in original Unwound drummer Brandt Sandeno's parents' basement over a weekend in the winter of 1991, the 12-track, vinyl-only Big Baby captures Vern Rumsey and Justin Trosper in their Metal Circus and Bleach-influenced halcyon days. A sense of disembodied melancholy pervades both "Aroo" and "Funny Love." This is some dark stuff for the disenchanted and disemboweled. The tracks unfold like tone poems amid a sea of fuzz. An industrial edge is palpable, but is it really present? I'll leave that for you to decide. This is truly original material.

One-sided single from LCD Soundsystem's upcoming LP This Is Happening.  These 12"s were printed up for Record Store Day 2010, and are limited to an edition of 1000.  The song is an awesome bit of vintage LCD, clocking in at 8+ minutes and featuring James' talking/singing style that was also featured on "Losing My Edge," "Yeah" and "Yr City's A Sucker."  Excellent stuff for sure, these won't be around long so act quick.  Recommended.

Clarks and reggae… who knew? DJ / Collector, Al Fingers (who also put together the Stussy Greensleeves book), recently put out a book on Clarks shoes and their place in reggae culture. This Record Store Day title continues to explore the theme with an official Clarks collaboration. This pic disc, which depicts the iconic Desert Boot, features two 80s classics dedicated to the brand: "Clarks Booty" by Little John (over "Father Rock" by King Jammy) and "Put On Me Clarks" by Scorcher (produced by Junjo Lawes). Mute offers up this special remix 12" from label favorites M83 for Record Store Day. Heavy heavy remix treatment for M83's "Reunion." The second single from their outstanding Hurry Up, We're Dreaming was nearly perfect, but with this 12" it gets tweaked to suit nearly everyone's taste. There's an instantly club ready version from Mylo that gives a little shine to the guitar while adding to the tracks already anthemic quality. For those that prefer their techno a shade darker Sei A delivers the goods. The song is stripped down to its essentials and the vocals are run through cavernous reverb. On the flip The Naked And Famous take "Reunion" on a hippy field trip before Polly Scattergood comes through with what is probably the most pleasing take on the tune. It's a languid, slowed down and sleazy version with plenty of space. No matter what your persuasion, though, this 12" will not disappoint.

Originally sold out at Record Store Day 2012, but we managed to snag a couple more copies for those that slept. Matthew Dear steps out of the darkness that was 2010's Black City and into more melodic, synth-laden, vocal-driven territory on Headcage. You can tell from the title track "Headcage" that this is a whole new ball game for Dear, who is actually working with other producers and vocalists on the EP. From Ghostly: "Headcage" leads with a dense, mutating cluster of breaths, whispers and assorted technicolor sounds until it coalesces into a hearty chug. The song gets an added aural heft from co-producers Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid, a Swedish partnership notable for work on albums like Blonde Redhead's Penny Sparkle, Glasser's Ring and Fever Ray's self-titled record. The unabashed melodic thrust of the lead vocals by Jonny Pierce (of Brooklyn outfit The Drums) makes "In the Middle (I Met You There)" one of Dear's most perfect—and unique—pop creations. The first duet in Dear's decade-long career, the dopamine flies when Dear's baritone kicks in. "Street Song" forgoes percussion and propulsion for a drifting, intoxicated reverie of an exotic melodic phrase, bubbling bass and Dear's falsetto. Something perhaps culled from a late night reverie heard from a window, or an imagined city long gone. "Around a Fountain" offers a dubby low end and claustrophobic atmosphere, but Dear's voice leavens the darkness, rounding out the EP with hymn-like whisper. Printed on grey marbled vinyl with beautiful pic sleeve designed by Michael Cina. Limited to 700 copies.

A Record Store Day Black Friday 2012 release that marked the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Incesticide. A great compilation album initially released to hold over the newly found rabid fans between the Nevermind & In Utero studio albums. Just as proper a Nirvana album as any of the others, the album features some of the band's greatest moments including the great Vaselines covers in "Molly's Lips" and "Son of A Gun" as well as the then unreleased "Aneurysm". The 20th anniversary edition is a limited 2LP pressing on 200 gram vinyl pressed at 45 RPM for a great audiophile listening experience. Recommended.

Record Store Day 2013 Exclusive! Special RSD edition of Olafur Arnalds For Now I Am Winter complete with limited fan art booklet and limited to only 1000 copies. For those unfamiliar with the young Icelandic pianist's work - think lush, cinematic soundscapes, perfect for a sojourn through the forest or that long, introspective drive home. This is a sound that would go well with a listening session of Sigur Ros (whom he actually toured with in the past). It is careful music that takes its time to progress and is moody, dramatic, and beautiful all at the same time. 12 tracks total on Deutsche Grammaphone.

Record Store Day 2010 Deadstock find! Taken from their Wolfgang Amadeus album, Fences saw a number of remixes being the obvious banger on the album... with a few others. This special edition pressing featured a remix available nowhere else from 25 Hours A Day. The original is a midtempo groover that sets the mood, and the remix is more up beat perfect for those bedroom dance parties. Limited edition pressing on Hot Pink vinyl.

Limited edition pressing for Record Store Day 2013! This one is sure to please the Pulp fans as well as the indie dance crowd. Back in 2000 the band recorded a demo of "After You" and never really ended up doing anything with it. Thankfully DFA's James Murphy recently stepped in and saw the demo to completion. The result is an expert blend of Pulp's Britpop sensibilities and Mr. LCD Soundsystem's well honed production abilities. The wry wit of front man Jarvis Cocker is on fully display while the incessant rhythm drives the song forward. To complete the trifecta the UK's Soulwax handle the remix duties with aplomb. Never hesitant to take on the high profile remix gigs the band know precisely what to do and turn "After You" in to prime club material. Murphy's "4am Desperation Disco To Disco Dub Version" is no slouch either, providing a needed salve for all you LCD fans that are thirsty for more.

Special release for Record Store Day 2013! We've been big fans of Rhye since we first heard "Open." The combination of expertly produced backing tracks and androgynous vocals was pretty much undeniable. With this 12" you get three servings of the track that deliver a satisfying meal for your ear. The OG still hits in all the right places, while the instrumental will give you a chance to let your inner vocalist out. The real treat here is the live version which presents a more subdued take of the track. A mellow string intro leaves plenty of space for the song to develop. It's well worth the price of admission.

Record Store Day 2012 exclusive! Ahh Empire Records, a fitting reissue for RSD that completes the RSD 2012 soundtrack trilogy. Like Pretty In Pink and Breakfast Club (the other RSD 2012 soundtrack reissues), this is another coming of age flick, only this time it revolves around record store employees in the 90's. That being said the soundtrack has an obvious 90's feel to it with tracks from your favorite alt rock guilty pleasures including The Cranberries, Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Cracker, Drill, etc. I believe this is also the first time it has been offered on vinyl (gold see-through even), adding to the nostalgia factor. Limited edition blue vinyl reissue for Record Store Day 2013! The Glove was a one off collaboration between the Cure's Robert Smith and Steven Severin of Siouxsie & The Banshees. Nothing short of a goth's match made in heaven! Smith, who's vocals are conspicuously absent for the majority of the record, was prohibited from singing in another band by his record company. This led the duo to enlist Zoo dancer Jeanette Landray, who was dating Banshees drummer Budgie at the time, to sing a majority of the tracks in the original release. There are strains of both musicians' bands throughout the album, but the sound is unique to The Glove.

Limited edition release for Record Store Day 2013! The Roots seminal Things Fall Apart sees it's first proper vinyl release with full cover art. The previous vinyl version came in a plain black sleeve. Here's what O-Dub had to say when we first picked up the album: Hands down, Things Fall Apart is the finest album The Roots have put together. It's not nearly as ambitious as Phrenology, or as electric as the first time you heard Doyouwantmore?, but cut for cut Things Fall Apart comes closest to realizing their vision as a group. It doesn't hurt that it boasts the Erykah Badu collabo, "You Got Me," which did for The Roots what "Killing Me Softly" did for The Fugees. However, we get far more than just one solid crossover hit here. For one, Things Fall Apart is a marvel of sequencing, a skill that not enough rappers learn to master. The record jumps straight out the box by beginning with the old school, jazzy breakbeat science of "Table of Contents, Parts 1 & 2," "The Next Movement" continues the slightly organic feel, mid-tempo flows of Illadelph Halflife, and that vibe continues onto "The Spark," where Dice Raw gets his. Then once you touch "Dynamite," a slinky jazz guitar beauty, the album starts to build its momentum. They hit s*%t off lovely on the very next song, "Without a Doubt," nodding to Schooly D's Philly classic "Saturday Night" long before the Young Gunnaz did. "Ain't Sayin' Nothin' New" throws down more sultry soulfulness only to be followed by the Mos Def/Black Thought pairing of "Double Trouble," rocking the kalimbas for real. This run hits its apogee with "Act Too (Love of My Life)," arguably one of the most beautifullest odes to hip-hop ever. Super-duper mellow, especially compared to the 300 watt heat that preceded it, but "Act Too" offers the perfect cool-down hiatus that you need to refresh. There's still another half dozen or so songs that follow, including "You Got Me," "Adrenaline," and "Don't See Us," but that middle run is the heart of the album and what makes Things Fall Apart such a masterful example of music-making. If you only ever buy one Roots album what you waiting for?

Record Store Day 2012 Black Friday Exclusive! This White Stripes single was originally released back in 2001 on XL, but gets a fresh reissue on candy red vinyl. Includes the "Hotel Yorba" recorded live at Hotel Yorba Room #286, back with "Rated X," a cover of the 1972 Loretta Lynn classic, also recorded live at the Hotel Yorba. Limited edition.

It's a potent combination that will keep the track on repeat in your headphones, especially when paired with a sick remix from Hodgy Beats of Mellowhype/Odd Future fame. Rare italian library music reissued just for Record Store Day 2013! Strut hooks up the deep diggers and collectors with the 1979 concept gem Desert by composer/arrangers Antonio Vuolo and Elio Grande. The original is impossible to find, released on tiny Italian label Cardium, and demands a pretty penny when it does surface. Here you get the full album, mastered from the OG reels with full repro artwork from the original lithographs. Fans of spacey electronic fusion and cosmic sounds (a la Tangerine Dream) should be all over this. Limited stock, only 500 copies in the US!

Record Store Day 2013 Exclusive! Limited edition repress of Winston Edwards' 1974 dub classic Natty Locks Dub just in time for RSD. Early and very heavy instrumental dub vibes here, recorded at Lee Perry's Black Ark studio and Joe Gibb's state of the art recording complex on Retirement Crescent. One listen and it is easy to see why this is considered by many a holy grail of dub. 10 tracks total with full pic sleeve reproduction. Very limited stock, recommended.
