Lab Overview

The Mood Hut crew seems to be popping up everywhere these days. From the Aquarian Foundation release on Going Good to some of the latest releases for Future Times, the crew has been gaining world wide support for their hazy brand of house. The latest to step out from the Canadian north are label founders, Pender Street Steppers. The duo of Liam Butler and Jack Jutson have teamed up with Andrew Morgan's PPU imprint for two tracks of their trademark boogie and new age inspired house. It's a satisfying pairing, what the Steppers bring to the table seems like something Mr. Morgan might dig up and reissue on his own. Their tracks don't so much work you over as take you along for the ride. Warm analog chords move around the synthetic sax samples of "Openin' Up" while percussion rolls around the beat. It all builds up in a way that gives the track a genuinely live feel. "M Flight" has a more jazzy feel, especially towards the end. The Pender Street Steppers have more to draw on than just house and techno, and it shows in their music. Thankfully they don't seem to take themselves too seriously. Recommended.
