The TMA-1 Studio Headphones are based on our most popular and bestselling DJ headphone, the TMA-1 DJ Headphones. The Studio model takes all the proven strengths of the TMA-1 and adds the studio monitor functionality. The two main features of a quality studio monitor are comfort (for long critical listening sessions) and a neutral / flat sound output (we'll explain this later in review). In terms of comfort, the Studios feature enlarged, over-the-ear ear cups that come in both foam and synthetic leather. The foam ear cups are better for sound isolation, while the synthetic leather ones give you a bit more comfort. In terms of sound response, the Studios deliver a quality flat output, meaning the sound is equally balanced between low, mid, and high frequencies. When you create music, you want to make sure your sound is flat to ensure it sounds good on all systems. Think of it as the baseline, so when someone plays your song on a boombox or a high end stereo system, your sound will be balanced (the user can always up the bass or treble).

What does a flat response actually sound like? In terms of the TMA-1 Studios, for everyday usage you probably won't notice the difference. In fact, the Studios will sound crisp and clear, much better than most standard headphones out there. For DJing, you will not notice much of a difference except a bit less bass (but still plenty enough to DJ with). Updated USB version of Audio-Technica's direct-drive turntable. With Technics prices at an all-time high, the Audio-Technica AT-LP120 USBs offers a secondary, more inexpensive option with features the 1200 does not have. Firstly, you will notice that the AT-LP120s looks very similar to the 1200. Audio-Technica has basically "borrowed" the 1200's popular layout and design. The major difference is that the AT-PL120s' body is mostly constructed of plastic (vs. the metal of the 1200); however the key parts remain metal (platter and tonearm). In addition, the AT-LP120 USBs retain some of the 1200s most popular features including a high-torque direct drive motor and 3-way adjustable tonearm assembly. Additionally, the AT-PL120 features direct USB connection for digitizing vinyl (software included), built-in pre-amp, -/+ 20% pitch adjustment, 33/45/78 options, and reverse play button; and includes a cartridge, slipmats, and dust cover.

The ATLP120 USB is one of the more professional USB turntables we carry; definitely a viable alternative to 1200s with some excellent features for recording and listening (not found on the 1200). Having the pre-amp and cartridge included also made setup much easier and the added USB connectivity makes digitizing vinyl a snap.

OUR OPINION

Finally, here's a viable, cost-effective alternative to the Technics 1200 (which is now discontinued). Audio-Technica has always been known for their turntables and turntable accessories, but this is their first turntable specifically designed for DJing. In terms of base features that are key for DJing, the AT-LP1240-USB hits all necessary marks: solid construction, powerful motor, accurate pitch / speed control, and a skip resistant tonearm. Check out the video below for our test of these features. The AT-LP1240-USB will definitely meet your DJ needs whether you are just beat match mixing or scratching doubles.

The key to AT-LP1240-USB's design is that it borrows its key functionality and design from the Technics 1200. The cast metal platter and rubberized base give the turntable that essential "heaviness feel". Even the black gloss finish seems more solid than the standard plastic top turntable faceplate. The high-torque motor rivals the force of the 1200, and the adjustable tonearm features similar controls (tracking weight, anti-skate, height adjustment) to the 1200. The quartz lock button is a popular feature borrowed from the 1200 MK5 model.

In addition, the AT-LP1240-USB includes many deluxe features that you will not find on the Technics 1200. At the heart of Base are 32 pressure/velocity sensitive pads with aftertouch, 9 touch sliders, 8 touch-sensitive buttons and 8 momentary buttons to control your set. The controls are fully editable and are illuminated with RGB lights that provide colorful and creative ways to play drums, synths, loops, sequence, change presets and navigate your set. The touch faders offer LED feedback that keep you updated on current values and adapt when you dynamically reassign the faders to your software. Monkey Banana's Turbo 5 Monitors are not only stylish in appearance, but also feature serious engineering to for top sound performance. The Bass-reflex acoustic design combines maximum efficiency and optimal bass extension via 50W amp and 5 1/4" magnetically shielded PP ceramic cone. Clear highs are provided via 1" natural silk dome powered by 20W HF amplifier. All the while, the MDF material ensures proper damping of vibrations from the drivers and the unique hexagonal design produces clear sound reproduction. After careful calculation and experimenting, Monkey Banana found that the non-regular hexagonal structure is most effective in minimizing standing waves inside the enclosure. (Standing waves can create audible distortion that can compromise the overall sound quality of the speaker.) All internal surfaces are lined with blended wool to further damp the structure of the cabinet. Audio Quality

The compact speakers achieve a larger than normal listening area due to the use of a curved waveguide enclosure that directs the soft-dome tweeter's sound in a wider pattern for better imaging and staging. This means more listeners across a larger area of a room can hear the higher frequencies than with traditional designs. Additionally, the Bass Reflex enclosure extends the lower frequency range to provide more mid-bass and bass output. Reloop is proud to present its first digital mixing controller designed especially for Serato: Terminal Mix 4. By introducing the Terminal Mix 4, Reloop has broken new ground once again with this fully integrated 4-channel mixer offering a wealth of features, including 3-fold EQ with intelligent kill technique and filter modulation capabilities per channel. Any of the 4 channels can be easily assigned to the crossfader via the controls on the front panel, where you will also be able to adjust the crossfader curve.

In addition to the popular Trax Encoder, the master section is now equipped with four convenient management buttons which allow direct access to playlists, crates or further layout views without the need to touch your laptop. This means a desired track can be located and loaded instantly into any deck via the designated load buttons - a fader start* function can also be activated if desired.

As a further highlight, Reloop has developed brand new ultra-flat aluminium jog platters which with an impressive XXL diameter of 15.5 cm have also been enhanced with a non-slip vinyl-grip coating for even more control over your tracks. With a total of 3 modes (Pitch Bend/Vinyl/Quick Search) it's possible to easily switch between pitch correcting, scratching, or browsing through tracks on the fly. OVERVIEW

The Technics 1200MK2 has been the industry standard for 25+ years. The Technics 1200 remains the preferred choice for all types of djing.

FEATURES

This is the turntable that first established the type of high torque (motor strength), accurate pitch (speed control), quality tone arm (aids in skip resistance), and superior sound that is required by djs; and after 25+ years it is still the standard by which all other turntables are judged. Every other turntable that has come since has patterned their design off this legendary piece of equipment, and the reason is simple: the 1200MK2 is about as close to perfection as you can get with a piece of machinery. It functions beautifully and the durability and construction are unmatched. The body and major components are made of steel. The bottom of the body is made of a dense rubber that eliminates distortion and feedback and adds extra weight for stability. Most of the basic parts are readily available and user replaceable.

MK2 vs. MK5

The differences between the MK2 and the newer MK5 versions are fairly minor and mostly aesthetic. They are as follows: the MK2 still has the "click" at zero on the pitch control;  the MK5 has a protected, inset on/off switch; the MK5 has an extra tonearm adjustment knob; the MK5 includes a slipmat; and the MK2 includes dust cover hinges. Other than that, they perform identically.

OUR OPINION

Our #1 recommendation. There is simply no replacement for a Technics 1200 turntable, and it's almost cooler to have this original MK2 model, without the unnecessary "new features" of the newer M3D and MK5 models. Regardless of model number, Technics still makes the best turntable available, and they are used in 99% of all venues. Resale value is also very high. Some newer turntables may have more features, but this is the superior overall product. When you use a 1200, you know you are using the best.

OVERVIEW

The 1210 M5G is subtitled the "grand master" and takes over the top of the line position for Technics' line of turntables. The major improvement here, and the feature which is exclusive to the 1210M5G, is the pitch control. It is now completely digital, which means you should never have the problem of mismatched pitch ranges, and it also gives you the ability to choose between two separate pitch ranges: the standard +/-8 range and the larger +/-16 range. OUR OPINION

The Technics 1200 turntable is still our #1 recommendation, in any model number. This "grand master" edition has finally made some serious improvements to the basic 1200 scheme, with the digital pitch control a particularly useful step. Aside from that, the M5G is the most unique 1200 this side of the limited edition gold 1200s and retains all the strengths of previous models. The feel and durability are unmatched. It is the best turntable available, and one that is used in 99% of all venues. Some newer turntables may have more features, but this is the superior overall product, and is the preferred choice for all types of djing. With the VCI-400, Vestax has decided to forgo the software specific hardware design and go for the an all-out controller that is fully customizable and works well with all the most popular DJ programs (Traktor, Serato DJ Intro, Virtual DJ, Abelton, DJay, and more). Vestax has definitely shifted the focus to high quality functionality with enough controls and features to accommodate future software updates.

The VCI-400 does an excellent job in delivering both the flashy deluxe features (lighted pad controls, LED channel meters, wide assortment of controls) and the solid foundational features (high quality jog controls, XLR outputs, excellent soundcard). In addition, the design is very intuitive with all the controls placed seemingly perfectly and marked clearly. Although there is a lot going on, it all makes sense like the placement of the tempo controls with the deck select directly underneath.

OUR OPINION

Although the price point may be barrier for the beginner or novice DJ, we can see this being a longtime workhorse for the working DJ. The feature set eliminates the need for MIDI add-ons and with its high-quality soundcard and XLR outputs, you're ready to plug it into a club system. In addition, we just love the true 4 channel layout, the filter knobs, and the layout (it definitely borrows from a traditional turntable-mixer setup).
