For his Serato pressing (the third in the Artist Series), Fairey has created 4 orignal pieces that adorn each side of the double LP set. No music on this one, just the Serato control tone on each side. Limited to 2000 pieces, recommended.

OUR OPINION

Stanton's entry level cartridge which boasts an extremely high output for something in this price range: 10mV, which is about the same as a high end Ortofon. Pretty impressive. It also comes with Stanton's mark of durability (they really do make the most rugged cartridges on the market), which makes this an easy choice for beginners. It comes with a spherical stylus, so scratching is not a problem although the high tracking force will wear your records a bit. You can't beat this for the money though.

Reloop is proud to present its first digital mixing controller designed especially for Serato: Terminal Mix 4. By introducing the Terminal Mix 4, Reloop has broken new ground once again with this fully integrated 4-channel mixer offering a wealth of features, including 3-fold EQ with intelligent kill technique and filter modulation capabilities per channel. Any of the 4 channels can be easily assigned to the crossfader via the controls on the front panel, where you will also be able to adjust the crossfader curve.

In addition to the popular Trax Encoder, the master section is now equipped with four convenient management buttons which allow direct access to playlists, crates or further layout views without the need to touch your laptop. This means a desired track can be located and loaded instantly into any deck via the designated load buttons - a fader start* function can also be activated if desired.

As a further highlight, Reloop has developed brand new ultra-flat aluminium jog platters which with an impressive XXL diameter of 15.5 cm have also been enhanced with a non-slip vinyl-grip coating for even more control over your tracks. With a total of 3 modes (Pitch Bend/Vinyl/Quick Search) it's possible to easily switch between pitch correcting, scratching, or browsing through tracks on the fly. The entire transport section is fully equipped with rubberised buttons which offer a comfortable pressure point whilst also being extremely durable.

The performance section features an extensive 8 button layout which can be utilised over 2 separate layers for true versatility. On the first layer 4 hot cues can be fired off and 4 sample decks can be triggered simultaneously. Depending on the software used, other creative possibilities are available, for example the option of accessing hot cues/samples 5-8 on the second layer - or with future software updates this section can be enhanced even further with brand new performance modes (Cut'n'Slice) for live remixing.

The extensive FX section is equipped with 4 buttons, 3 rotary knobs, and 1 endless encoder to provide even more creative possibilities in the mix. The smart loop section also features 4 independent controls allowing users to quickly set beat-precise loops, adjust the size of the loops and even move the loops whilst in a live situation. Reloop also listened to the requests by many DJs and for the first time has integrated a 14 bit pitch fader with 100mm increments, allowing ultra-precise mixing and blending.

The audio section offers a vast array of connecting possibilities for your master PA (including balanced output jacks), a zone function and a DJ booth system. Also very practical are the 2 headphones connections (6.3 mm & 3.5 mm) which can be adjusted with a 1-band equalizer. A microphone connection with a 1-fold EQ for MCs, hosts or singers has also been integrated and can be adjusted via a flexible routing switching system. OUR OPINION

Finally, here's a viable, cost-effective alternative to the Technics 1200 (which is now discontinued). Audio-Technica has always been known for their turntables and turntable accessories, but this is their first turntable specifically designed for DJing. In terms of base features that are key for DJing, the AT-LP1240-USB hits all necessary marks: solid construction, powerful motor, accurate pitch / speed control, and a skip resistant tonearm. Check out the video below for our test of these features. The AT-LP1240-USB will definitely meet your DJ needs whether you are just beat match mixing or scratching doubles.

The key to AT-LP1240-USB's design is that it borrows its key functionality and design from the Technics 1200. The cast metal platter and rubberized base give the turntable that essential "heaviness feel". Even the black gloss finish seems more solid than the standard plastic top turntable faceplate. The high-torque motor rivals the force of the 1200, and the adjustable tonearm features similar controls (tracking weight, anti-skate, height adjustment) to the 1200. The quartz lock button is a popular feature borrowed from the 1200 MK5 model.

In addition, the AT-LP1240-USB includes many deluxe features that you will not find on the Technics 1200. The USB output and built-in pre-amplifier are excellent features for those who are ripping vinyl. The removable cords and under-platter closed design address some of the 1200's biggest flaws. The reverse play, dual start / stop buttons, and start / stop controls will appeal to DJs that need more control.

AT-LP1240-USB vs. TECHNICS 1200

Is the AT-LP1240-USB as good as the Technics 1200? The AT-LP1240-USB is a viable alternative to 1200 for DJ usage, however, it is not in the top class of the 1200. The 1200 features superior construction, more metal parts, and a higher quality tonearm. When you factor in price and availability, the AT-LP1240-USB becomes the realistic choice for many DJs. In addition, the look may not be the classic 1200, but the AT-LP1240-USB's sleek design beats out most of its current competitors.

LAB REVIEW

With the VCI-400, Vestax has decided to forgo the software specific hardware design and go for the an all-out controller that is fully customizable and works well with all the most popular DJ programs (Traktor, Serato DJ Intro, Virtual DJ, Abelton, DJay, and more). Vestax has definitely shifted the focus to high quality functionality with enough controls and features to accommodate future software updates.

The VCI-400 does an excellent job in delivering both the flashy deluxe features (lighted pad controls, LED channel meters, wide assortment of controls) and the solid foundational features (high quality jog controls, XLR outputs, excellent soundcard). In addition, the design is very intuitive with all the controls placed seemingly perfectly and marked clearly. Although there is a lot going on, it all makes sense like the placement of the tempo controls with the deck select directly underneath.

OUR OPINION

Although the price point may be barrier for the beginner or novice DJ, we can see this being a longtime workhorse for the working DJ. The feature set eliminates the need for MIDI add-ons and with its high-quality soundcard and XLR outputs, you're ready to plug it into a club system. In addition, we just love the true 4 channel layout, the filter knobs, and the layout (it definitely borrows from a traditional turntable-mixer setup).

The S-DJ05 Active Reference Monitoring Speakers are designed for DJing and music production. These speakers feature excellent sound quality, audio parameter control, built-in linear equalization and four switchable inputs, useful for DJs and producers who need to achieve the highest accuracy in musical reproduction. In addition, the S-DJ05 speakers offer users the ability to change settings such as sound characteristics and audio inputs via a unique manual controller.

Audio Quality

The compact speakers achieve a larger than normal listening area due to the use of a curved waveguide enclosure that directs the soft-dome tweeter's sound in a wider pattern for better imaging and staging. This means more listeners across a larger area of a room can hear the higher frequencies than with traditional designs. Additionally, the Bass Reflex enclosure extends the lower frequency range to provide more mid-bass and bass output. In order to reproduce the highest quality audio possible, the speakers are also equipped with strong high-force magnets for better control of the subwoofers, a low resonance chimney-style heat sink and a bi-amp circuit that drives the tweeter and woofer separately. The linear equalizer allows users to adjust the low and high bands from -6 dB to +6dB helping to enhance the tonal quality of instruments while producing music or recreate the low frequency sound of a club while DJing for a more realistic experience, important for critical listeners.

Control

Unique to Pioneer's DJ speakers, the included control accessory allows users to simultaneously operate the volume, power and four switchable input channels of both speakers. The dial style control knob also engages the equalizer and muting of both speakers.

Inputs and Extras

The S-DJ05 speakers feature four types of inputs (XLR, TRS and two sets of RCA) that let users connect various devices simultaneously, such as a computer, DJ equipment, portable device, etc. The various inputs eliminate the need to change cable connections so the speakers can be utilized with a broad variety of sources. The speakers also feature an environmentally-friendly Auto Standby feature that automatically detects input signals and switches the standby mode when input is not detected within 60 minutes. OVERVIEW

The CDJ-200 is a step up from Pioneer's CDJ-100, bridging the gap between their most basic professional CD player and the higher priced vinyl simulation models. This is an excellent choice for djs who need a high quality cd turntable with dj functions, but don't require scratching ability. You do have a digital jog dial which is fully functional for cuing, beat matching and controlling effects, but scratching is not a possibility with this unit. The CDJ-200 is also much smaller (11" x 8.5") than the vinyl-simulating models, which makes it perfect for traveling and cramped studio spaces.

FEATURES

While the lack of scratching capability will be a drawback to some, the CDJ-200 includes an efficient and useful set of features which will meet the needs of nearly everybody else. Functions include assignable cue point settings, +/-6/10/16 % pitch bend with master tempo control (aka key correction), digital jog break effects (jet, zip and wah), sampling & looping capability with easy to use adjustments, CD-RW and mp3s playback capability with folder search functions, and more. Many of these are either improvements over the CDJ-100 or simply new features.

OUR OPINION

Pioneer continues to be one of the top digital manufacturers, and their cd players are some of the most trusted on the market. The CDJ-200 looks great (people love the blue light), the quality is high, and the relatively small size is very welcome. It still comes in at an excellent price point, and solidifies Pioneer's stake in the market for non-scratch professional cd players.

FEATURES

The MPC 1000 features a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo sampler with 136 seconds of mono sampling time standard (expandable to 24m28sec). Sound wave patterns are displayed as wave forms, making it possible to edit samples both visually and aurally. Effects including pitch, LFOs, envelopes, time stretch and resample are available for use with all sounds. A new addition to the 1000 series includes two stereo effects and one master effect each of which are assignable to all sounds. These stereo effects include chorus, flanger, bit grunger, 4-band EQ (also available in master), compressor (also available in master), phase shifter, tremolo, flying pan and reverb. Another improvement over past MPC's is the inclusion of a high pass filter, and both the low and high pass filters on the 1000 are 2-pole per voice.

The sequencer section is where the MPC has really derived its great reputation. With a 100,000 note memory and a capacity of up to 99 sequences that can be recorded in either linear or pattern-style, the 1000 is an extremely powerful machine. It also features a step edit mode, a loop recording function and 16 level, full level, tap tempo, auto punch and undo sequence features, making it extremely fast and intuitive to work with.

The hardware on the MPC 1000 offers enough connections to satisfy the most demanding recording applications. 2 new hardware features on the 1000 make it more compatible with computer based studios than its predecessors. The first improvement is the Compact Flash port which takes cards that range from 32MB (included) to 2GB. The second is the inclusion of a USB port that supports storage on MAC and PC via the Mass Storage Class USB standard. Basically, M.S.C. is a file management system that allows you to drag and drop sound files from the MPC to your computer's hard drive and vice versa, via the USB port. These 2 features negate the need for those slow floppy and zip disks, a weakness of previous MPC models.

The back panel of the 1000 is equipped with stereo 1/4" INs and OUTs, four 1/4" individual OUTs, digital S/PDIF IN and OUT, two MIDI INs and OUTs, a headphone OUT and two footswitch INs. The dimensions of the unit are 13" by 8" and it weighs less than 8lbs. Its sample reading capabilities are compatible with the MPC 2000XL, MPC 4000, Z4, Z8 and the S5000/6000.

OUR OPINION

I can remember when the MPC 60 cost $3200 brand new out of the box. We've come a long way in these 15 years and as advancements in technologies are made, the consumer is the real winner in the end. The 1000 is a real deal production center, equipped with most of the features that made the MPC so legendary.

Some of the new features included with the MPC 1000 should be especially appealing to today's musician. The addition of a 2-pole high pass filter gives the user a new range of sound design possibilities previously unavailable to the MPC. On previous models, the internal effects were either limited or cost extra to buy the expansion boards. The different effects that come standard with the 1000 allow the user to more fully shape their sounds within the MPC, lessening the need for outboard gear or upgrades.

In our opinion, the greatest improvement with the 1000 is the inclusion of the Mass Storage Class USB standard and the Compact Flash port. For CPU users this will negate the need for floppy and Zip discs that can be slow and difficult to manage. The speed of being able to drag and drop sound files as well as the convenience of having all your samples at your finger tips, displayed on your computer screen, will save a lot of time and creative energy. The new methods of memory storage (Compact Flash card and USB) will ensure that the user's data doesn't get lost as formats change and that the MPC 1000 will be able to communicate with new equipment as it is released in the future.

Overall the most important element the 1000 retained from its MPC lineage is its ease of use. Its layout and sequencing section is intuitive, making it a fast learn. The trademark trigger pads and sequencing features make it a powerful, realistic drum programming tool. Portability is no longer an issue with the 1000's new compact size. Take it to djing gigs and trigger sound effects or homemade creations into the mix. For live bands the 1000 can add anything from more powerful drums to atmospheric sound scapes, all at the touch of sixteen buttons. By no means a lightweight, the 1000 will probably end up dominating the hardware based production market for years to come.

The ample layout which is optimized for the ergonomic operation methods of DJs, offers intuitive control for a fast and secure performance without the need to touch a computer. The deck-control section is amply equipped and offers ideal control of all advanced functions for perfect digital DJing with up to 4 virtual decks.
