Limited repress of this sought-after sound fx comp from Strada Records Japan. Strada pressed this up back in 2005 in ridiculously small numbers and since then it has been kind of a big deal with the big disco and house DJs (who were able to get a copy!). It is basically an indispensible mixing tool - especially if you are going between tempos, need something cool and sweeping for an intro or outro, or just want to mess with the crowd with some trippy sound effects. Regardless if you're mixing disco, house, techno, reggae, whatever.. the record comes through in the clutch. Features long electronic sweeps, sea side ambience, air raid sirens, winds, disco bomb sounds, jets, kids laughing on LSD, etc. This one won't leave the bag anytime soon!

Backstory: released by UK tastemakers Honest Jon's in 2010, the archival compilation Shangaan Electro broadcast to the world a South African newness of high tempo (somewhere around 180), electronic dance music. Laden with drum machines and quick, synthesized melodies, it became one of the most intriguing and interesting listens of the year. From there, Honest Jon's expanded and encouraged its influence in a series of "meets Shangaan Electro" that saw producers of a variety of styles worldwide offering their take on the "New Wave Dance Music of South Africa." And thus, following in the footsteps of such masters as Detroit's Theo Parrish, footworker DJ Rashad, Ricardo Villalobos, and more, we arrive at Actress' own revision. Definitely further out than his past hits, "Harrier ATK" and "Maze" this sees Actress going further down the post-dubstep, tropical, techno, what-have-you, rabbit hole. The A-side provides a darker edge to the dance style, filtering its sounds through a labyrinth of mutated minimal groove, a highly recommended next-level track. B-side stays a bit closer to the original's stylings, adding bits and pieces of funky flux. Certainly cuts for those with more unknown and exotic curiousities.

Amy Winehouse always seemed to have a soft spot for The Specials. She even jumped on stage during The Specials performance back in the summer of 2009 and made history. This 7" features two great Specials ska tunes covered by Amy Winehouse and recorded live; "A Message To You Rudy" is from the 2008 Rock In Rio Madrid show, while "Monkey Man", backed by Jools Holland's Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, was recorded live on Later in 2007. Updated version of the very popular camo Audio Technica headphones. The MK2 is very similar to the original, with slightly rounder earpieces and bolder logos/markings. These special camouflage colorway headphones have become a cult classic, previously only available in Japan or in very small run import batches. Aside from their unique look, the ATH-PRO5MK2 features 40mm drivers, sturdy construction, and comfortable padding. Sound quality is above average for this price range, with strong bass and clearly defined mids. Sophomore full length from Geoff Barrow's Beak project. II or ">>" continues the trio's exploration into the realms of modern kraut-inspired rock. With a bleak and minimal sound kit Beak are able to conjure the energies of krautrock pioneers such as Can, Amon Duul, and Neu all in one room and in one take (with very few overdubs). It's impressive to say the least the way they are able to move from a driving motorik rhythm, then to discordant stoner metal, then into a droning ambient track. Though the style is very different, the same energy that was prevalent in Portishead (Barrow's other project) can also be found here (sans female vocals of course). 10 tracks on import double vinyl or CD, well recommended.

Chicago house rarities repressed! Bernard Badie is responsible for a handful of Chicago house classics throughout the early 90's ("Time Reveals" with Dajae being the most infamous), but only the deepest collectors are up on this one. The original Bernards Got The Funk 12" was released back in 1988 on Bernard's own DJB label and is a shining example of raw house from the Windy City, a sound that is still very relevant to this day (especially with the current trends in retro house). Check the moving chords and deep strings on "My First Love," while "Come To Me" takes it deeper underground with raw vocals and emotive synth work. Fans of classic material from Mr. Fingers, Frankie Knuckles, or Virgo Four should be all over this one. Limited repress from Germany's Mojuba label, housed in stamped paper sleeve.

Disco secret weapon revealed! Apparently this record has been a staple in DJ Harvey sets for years now, but has been incredibly hard to find due to a tiny private pressing on Morrhtyhm back in 1980. Thankfully, UK's Trunk Records has done a faithful repress (pic sleeve and all) so all the disco nerdus can get the goods at the nice price. The jam here is the title cut "It's Broken," that rocks hard on the quirky disco rock tip. Definitely a rare specimen of disco! Other tracks worth investigating: the slow motion cosmic groove of "Jungle Talk" and the uber-creepy, but hilarious "Van Man." Don't miss it!

Out of the dystopian reality of late 1970s France came a creative and irreverent spirit. Artists like Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Henriette Coulouvrat pushed he boundaries of post punk while experimenting with new technologies that were appearing at the time. Along with those new technologies came a vision of a utopian future. One free from the disillusionment of the cold war and France's dismal economic state of affairs. While things may or may not have changed for the better the music that was produced from these circumstances is just as powerful today as it was back then. With the sounds of new & cold wave continuing to make their presence felt it only makes sense to turn towards the originators of these genres. Includes a fold-out color poster with bands info and unreleased photos. Limited to 500 copies.

Subway is Bruce Davidson's groundbreaking work of 80's NYC photography, now in its third edition with ten previously unpublished images. Here is our original review from 2004: Outstanding photography book from Bruce Davidson, collecting his work on NYC subways during 1980 and 1981. Much like Jamel Shabazz's photographs from this time period, Davidson's photographs easily bottle up the moods & fashions of the day, but there's something much darker about this book. Yes, the NY subways were bombed to hell in 1980 (and Davidson captures that perfectly), but it's more than that. You can feel the no air conditioning summer heat, smell the subway fried garbage, rats & piss, crumpled brown paper bags & nameless funk that gets into everything. There are some cool breeze moments too, when the light breaks through, somebody smiles and a flash of warmth spreads out; but this book tends to blow your head off. You sense a fight coming, look for something over your shoulder, feel the darkness. So New York in the 80s, powerful stuff. 118 pages with introduction by Fab 5 Freddy, hardcover.

This isn't really a traditional "mash up" album (sorry if you were hoping for another Grey Album), rather, Bullion took snippets of songs from the Beach Boys' classic Pet Sounds and chopped them up with snippets from J. Dilla's catalog to create a new school beats masterpiece (seriously). Check the samples if you don't believe me - I'm partial to "Don't Talk," "You Still Believe In Dee," and "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times," but the whole album is damn solid. Fans of The Beach Boys, Dilla or both definitely need to take a listen to this. 13 tracks, plays at 33. Recommended.

Split 7" from Future Classic featuring awesome disco-fied covers of massive electro pop tunes. Cadillac is up first with the daunting task of covering Daft Punk's epic "Too Long," but the Australian band manages to pull off a slick and sophisticated new disco version that adds a smooth tropical vibe into the mix. On the flip, New Navy takes on Telepopmusik's "Breathe," keeping the uplifting energy of the original intact, while adding a propulsive disco rhythm, pumping guitars and bass, and huge breakdowns. Both sides are winners on this one. Recommended.

Live recording from the Tago Mago sessions, circa 1971. Can hit a creative peak with the around the time of Tago Mago and this live recording of an in-studio jam at their Inner Space Studio in Cologne is more proof. You can really hear Damo Suzuki working the vocals in this recording and the rest of the band keeps the drum heavy, stream of conscious grooves flowing. Essential listening for fans of groove heavy kraut jams and general bugged out psych. Two side-long tracks on limited edition red vinyl pressing from Russia, housed in clear plastic sleeve.

It's rare that I call a balearic record "the bomb," but this one really deserves it. Carly Simon's "Why" is one of those tracks that just works in every way. From the perfectly balanced backing beat (produced by Nile Rodgers/Chic!) with enough funk in the groove to keep it moving, while still maintaining that sentimental mood (thanks to the catchy as hell synth hook), to Carly's lovely longing vocals - this is pure balearic perfection. Original copies are rare and sought-after, so get this nice import repress while it lasts. Instrumental version by Chic on the flip. Recommended.

Mind-blowing musical find! This one's been causing a stir on the net ever since it was discovered (and rightfully so). Charanjit Singh's Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat is one of the most interesting and incredible musical discoveries in recent memory. Sounding like a cross breed of the toughest acid techno grooves with the futuristic electronic sensibility of AFX's Analord put to through a classic Indian Raga filter... circa 1982. That's right, this was created in 1982! Charanjit Singh was a Bollywood soundtrack composer who originally hoped to capitalize on the disco craze of the time by matching up the ragas to electronic disco beats. He produced these tracks on a totally classic acid house set up consisting of a TB-303 bassline, TR-808 drum machine and the Jupiter-8 synthesizer - halfway around the world and 5 years earlier than acid house pioneers Chip E and Phuture. The futuristic quality of these tracks is insane. Check the sounds and prepare to get your mind seriously blown. Huge thanks to the guys at Bombay Connection for unearthing this treasure of a release. 10 tracks total - not to be missed. Highly recommended.

Winner of Wired's "Best Mobile Gizmo" award. Chill Pill speakers are highly portable, pocket-sized speakers that can be transported in "pill" form (ingeniously held together by magnets). When you want to play music, simply pull apart the pill and untwist the tops to release the mini-subwoofers. In addition, all the needed cords (stereo plug, USB input) are built into the speakers with their own coil system.

For its size, the Chill Pill offers loud and clear sound. I plugged in my iPhone and the sound filled a medium sized room. The manufacturer boasts that the quality of the sound is better than standard desktop computer speakers. The Chill Pill also expands to reveal mini-subwoofers for enhanced bass.

The curatorial wizardry of Dante Carfagna releases true magic on Personal Space: Electronic Soul 1974 - 1984, their new collection of incredible finds, gems of unheard, private-issue soul from the 70s and 80s, all with an emphasis on synthesizer, sequencer, and drum machine usage. Setting itself far above most recent reissues, itǃs a compilation that explores the creation of an identity amidst what was a new age of sounds. Unique atmospheres, moods, emotions, are pioneered by circuitry, a prime example being the Makers' "Don't Challenge Me". Lulling the listener into its call-and-response of synthesized composition and sultry vocals, the track has been melting ears around here. Jeff Phelps, Key & Cleary, Starship Commander Woo Woo's "Master Starship" (basically, THE jam) further highlight these uncharted territories of emotional weirdness - a wholly new kind of soul music prime for introspection, mind-wandering and thoughtfulness (thoughtlessness). Highly recommended, a must-have for anyone whoǃs been digging anything from Stones Throw, Now Again Records, etc. Also of note, awesome packaging is just always a plus, with a beyond choice photo from NASA gracing the comp's cover.

Highly sought after Italian cosmic heater alert! Originally released in 1981 on the tiny Ivory Coast imprint, West African Music, both tracks offer a near minimal techno approach that proved to be way ahead of their time. Codek's "Closer" might be the pick here with its chugging rhythm, monotone vocals and deadly arpeggios. Excellently primed for the dancefloor. Flip the record over and prepare for something completely unexpected. Falsetto chants lead the way for off kilter rhythms and all manner of funky synth squiggles and punchy drum programming. Limited edition repress.

A rhythmic expedition into territories unknown. Cut Hands is the alias of William Bennet, previously a pioneer in the field of noise (see Whitehouse), Afro Noise is his newest, latest, and arguably most different, accessible, project. The record sees Bennet, a noted scholar on Africaǃs regional musics, exploring various types of percussion and rhythm native to areas such as Ghana and the Congo. Arrays of Ghanian instruments, djembe drums, carve out their space in-between grainy synthesizers, bass, and a powerful palette of effects. Comparisons to sorcery, voodoo might be cheap, but do seem worth a mention, as this is most certainly some form of acoustic alchemy and Iǃm left still not really knowing how to describe it. If my ears themselves were more eloquent maybe, but right now itǃs unfamiliarity and awe. Most assuredly a must-hear, especially given recent reissues of Throbbing Gristle, the exploding interest in alternative and industrial synth music, and archival explorations from labels such as Awesome Tapes from Africa, Sofrito, Analog Africa, etc. Track highlights include ǃ_Stabbers Conspiracyǃ_ for its unrelenting rhythm, ǃ_Rain Washes Over Chaffǃ_, for its cinematic tension.

William Bennet has described his Cut Hands project, a geographical rhythmic spectacular, as originating from his desire to inject ǃ_Haitian vaudou musicǃ_ and ritual drumming into a club set he was once doing in Glasgowǃs renowned Optimo venue. The record, coming a few years after and divided upon release into two volumes, is itself an exploration, a fusion of electronics and sourced, researched, traditional African forms of percussion (see Volume 1 review for a bit more exposition). The tracks on part two almost act as a calm after the storm, more ambient in parts, more conventional as a whole, still altogether as scintillating and suspenseful as the first though. And while a companion piece through and through, still has its own highlights, the ritual dance readiness of ǃ_Impassionǃ_, the tranquility of ǃ_Ezili Fredaǃ_, the epic final notes of ǃ_Rain Washes Over Every Thingǃ_. Again, a must-explore if youǃve been into anything from archival reissues of regional music to compilations of industrial dance hits.

Bet you don't have this limited edition, import-only Interstella 5555 figure set! Your favorite "One More Time"-singing, blue-skinned aliens from the epic Daft anime are now available in "harder, better" figure form. This bad ass box set contains all the band members complete with their instruments - Stella and Arpegius both with guitars, Octave and his spaced out double keyboard, Baryl and his drumset, PLUS Shep, the alien star pilot that helps save the band from peril here on Earth. The detailing on each piece is top notch, with clean painted details that truly accentuate Leiji Matsumoto's classic character design. Plus, the figures feature movable heads and limbs, similar to those old Robotech figures from the 80s, so you can pose 'em however you please (that is if you actually open the box). Only 5555 produced worldwide. Recommended.

Now in black! Small enough to fit in your pocket (about 3" tall), this mau5 is one of the coolest portable ipod speakers we've seen. Regardless of if you're into the mega producer's big room sound (I certainly am), it's hard to deny the appeal of the unique design, which is inspired by the titular costume head Deadmau5 wears while performing. Internal rechargeable battery (four to eight hours of usage after an hour or charging), includes audio cable, usb cable, multiple units can be linked to create better sound.

Africa 50 Years of Music compiles an astonishing number of cuts from throughout the continent. It exists as a celebration of the wave of independence that swept the African continent in the second half of the 20th century and showcases its musical diversity. Everything is of high quality, from early North African rai to classical Egyptian music and the rumba of the Congo. The scope of the project is large, but the curators did a masterful job. They keep an ear towards the celebratory feeling of independence rather than the disaffected youth of today. There is something for everyone here, even seasoned collectors will undoubtedly get turned on to something new. Limited edition 5LP box set.

Incredible, never thought I'd see a volume two, but Soulscape just had someone hand-deliver these from Seoul! The first volume of this Korean diggers' series sold out very quickly, and with good reason, you're not going to find this stuff anywhere else (still have my Peter Luger porterhouse bet open). Soulscape gives us a little background: "The Postwar Korean Peninsula was a melting pot where different cultures from the east and west collide. The music business grew significantly as clubs were founded around the US military bases and musicians playing for the clubs had interpreted and localized rock, jazz, soul, and boogaloo in various styles. However, such unique music was suppressed and vanished for the political interests of the military regime in the mid 70s an it still remains discontinued and underestimated." DEEP! Essential for Koreans and record heads now in deluxe reissue with gatefold jacket. 40 tracks mixed, one hour, recommended.

Deluxe reissue of Soulscape's first Sound Of Seoul mix, now in gatefold jacket! Internet celeb Mr. Kim introduced me to this mix by Seoul's DJ Soulscape. You should pick this up on principle alone; I'd bet a Luger porterhouse that you'll won't find a mix of Korean rock, soul, disco, and boogaloo anywhere else (of this caliber too). From Korean heritage myself, this definitely reveals a side of motherland that I've never experienced. Thanks, Soulscape. Over one hour, untracked. Recommended.

Sweden's Drop Out Orchestra make their debut on BSTRD BOOTS with top notch disco house reconstructions of sure fire party jams. Up first is a monster remake of Daft Punk's "Around The World" (aka "International Track") that really puts the "disco" in the mix with added strings, slappy bass, and an international vocoder roll call. Can't miss with this! Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" might be the butt of many Rickroll gags, but Drop Out Orchestra's disco dub version is no joke! Their remake revitalizes this 80's hit for the modern dancefloor (and it actually works!). On the flip, Diana Ross & The Supreme's get the sexy slo-mo disco treatment on "My World Is Empty Without You" and Cortex's "Freaky" gets an added bump for extra bounce. BSTRD BOOTS hit a homerun with this one. Recommended.

Lots of interesting tidbits about this record, but lets start with the music. DUMP is the solo side project from James Mcnew, bass player of Yo La Tengo. For "NYC Tonight," McNew brings back that '79 disco vibe and lays it on a cover of the GG Allin (aka "the most spectacular degenerate in rock & roll history") song of the same name. Quite a feat, but he totally makes it work! The track will easily get itself stuck in your head with it's catchy laidback lyrics, swingy melodies, and subtle-y stomping disco beat. Flip side features a collab remix by Shitaro Sakamoto (ex-Yura-Yura Teikoku) with instrumentals for both. Pressed up in SAM style disco sleeve with free MP3 download. Manufactured by Presspop, the guys who brought you the Lee Perry doll!

Electronium was originally released as a boxset a few years ago, but is back as a single LP!  Fans of early electronics and general synth nerdery (modules!) will be all over this as the album focuses largely on the work of Raymond Scott, an experimental composer and pioneering electronic instrument inventor. Scott is responsible for inventing several early electronic instruments, including the Electronium (after which this comp is named) and the Clavivox, and also served as a mentor for Bob Moog! As for the music, hip-hop fans will instantly recognize "Lightworks" as the sample source for that Dilla track, while "Wield Piece" and "Don't Beat Your Wife" offer more examples of early electronic weirdness. There's plenty to dig into here from Scott, but the comp also features the work of Dick Hyman (famous for his moog cover of James Brown), as well soundscapes from Oneness of Juju, Alex Durbin, Trip Motion Picture, and an unreleased track from Pink Floyd! 21 tracks total, chock full of great material for producers and fans alike.

Deadstock score of this obscure Eric B solo 12" from 1995. Yeah this was probably dollar bin material in 1996, but 15 years have treated this 12" real nice. That photoshop 2.0 cover and double-brested suit are kinda cool now, but what I'm about is that banging Eric B beat that samples Maze's party classic "Before I Let Go." Surprisingly, the vocal version ain't too bad (featuring a spry Freddie Foxx!), but the Dub Version is where it is at, my furry friends. Also includes the instrumental. Original pic sleeve pressing. Recommended.

A Truly entrancing artifact of the past few decades, Evan Pyramid snuck up on us here at the office. Now a mainstay in mornings lacking energy, its mid tempo groove odysseys have us zipping around with a newfound efficiency. The story goes, from the comprehensive and enjoyable gatefold liner notes, that a late 70s Andre Evans, a sort of journeyman session musician, suffered so heavily from a breakup that he confined himself to glasses of wine and Marvin Gaye. What came out was "Never Gonna Leave You", a highly unique piece of futuristic soul that refuses to unlock itself from its passionate, if somber, momentum. From the liner notes, to pique intrigued ears, "Andre was able to achieve an undeniably unique sound by overdubbing rhythmic guitar parts while using the technique of muting guitar strings." A vague enough citation sure, but I can't justifiably give away too much about the song, its mysterious hypnotic quality has to be heard to be fully understood. Beyond "Never", the rest of the album continues as a collection of Evans' singles and unreleased material throughout the 70s and 80s. "Dip Drop" and "Rubber Band" play out as the dancefloor anthems, ready for any barbecue afterparty or birthday party shakedown. The clear rival to the burner-quality of "Never" comes from "No I Won't", a more upbeat showcase of Evans' hypnotic soul-step. With a soaring female lead, a warbled, synth-string melody, and the same guitar-magic employed on "Never", the song will sneak its way into your head. Tailor-made for the end-hours of DJ sets. All told, a good collection, and story, of rescued obscurity. Recommended.

Debut release from the Sunkissed Recordings label, and imprint dedicated to compiling the finest balearic moments from various artists. For this first volume, Sunkissed focuses on the work of bluesy rockers Fleetwood Mac, giving us a fantastic selection of sun-touched gems from their catalog. Kicking it off is the 12" extended dance version (mixed by the legendary Arthur Baker!) of the Fleetwood classic "Big Fun". Check that super tough drum programming, topped off by absolutely epic vocals and melodies that will send chills down the spines of the dancefloor denizens. Worth it for this one alone, but there's a lot more where that came from! "Ricky" is up next, a moody number that was a staple at the early Ibiza parties, while "Keep On Going" closes out the A-side on a swingin' uptempo groove. On the flip, things get chilled with the mellow vibes of "Hypnotised," and the sensual "Brown Eyes," before giving one last hurrah for the dancefloor with the stomping blues number "World Turning." All in all, a perfect addition to your sunset party crate. Recommended.

The second incarnation of the hugely popular Buddha Machine features nine new loops, but unlike its predecessor, it features a "pitch bend" wheel so you can manipulate the box's drones and tones to your liking. This lo-fi wonder won't blow you away with sound quality or high-techness, but it has undeniable character: simple, fun, and relaxing (not to mention the music + audio applications).  We've sold hundreds of the Buddha Machine!

FM3, the Beijing-based electronic duo who invented the machine and played the 9 loops here, have moved 50,000 units+ worldwide, with customers like Daft Punk, Brian Eno, Low, Sunn O))), Gorillaz and Mike Patton. Runs on two AA batteries (not included) and features a 1/8" output. Recommended.
