The TMA-1 Studio Headphones are based on our most popular and bestselling DJ headphone, the TMA-1 DJ Headphones. The Studio model takes all the proven strengths of the TMA-1 and adds the studio monitor functionality. The two main features of a quality studio monitor are comfort (for long critical listening sessions) and a neutral / flat sound output (we'll explain this later in review). In terms of comfort, the Studios feature enlarged, over-the-ear ear cups that come in both foam and synthetic leather. The foam ear cups are better for sound isolation, while the synthetic leather ones give you a bit more comfort. In terms of sound response, the Studios deliver a quality flat output, meaning the sound is equally balanced between low, mid, and high frequencies. When you create music, you want to make sure your sound is flat to ensure it sounds good on all systems. Think of it as the baseline, so when someone plays your song on a boombox or a high end stereo system, your sound will be balanced (the user can always up the bass or treble).

What does a flat response actually sound like? In terms of the TMA-1 Studios, for everyday usage you probably won't notice the difference. In fact, the Studios will sound crisp and clear, much better than most standard headphones out there. For DJing, you will not notice much of a difference except a bit less bass (but still plenty enough to DJ with). The label "studio montiors" should not dissuade you from purchasing these for any application. The bottom line is that they sound great and they would be awesome to have on your desk or in the airport. Please Note that studio monitors like these are "big" headphones, they may not be the best for everyday commuters.

Originally released in 1995 by Aphex Twin, I Care Because You Do was his third full length effort. It was the first of his albums to break away from being a solely ambient affair and featured a wider variety of material. Preceded by the single "Ventolin," which was released on its own with multiple mixes, the record serves as the first sign post of Aphex Twin's particular sense of humor. "Ventolin" - the noisy middle finger to the electronic music world - serves as the track I Care Because You Do is centered around. The tracks preceding it, especially the Philip Glass orchestrated "Icct Hedral," seem to be looking back at what has come before. And what comes after ushers in a new era of productions by Richard D. James. "Come On You Slags!" corals the tinnitus mimicking noise of "Ventolin" into a mellow harbinger of breakcore, complete with porn star samples, while "Start As You Mean To Go On" issues a template for much of the non-4-on-the-floor dance music that would come after it. As the album reaches its final tracks we get to what many people will say is their favorite of Aphex Twin's. "Alberto Balsam," built around a repeating steel drum melody, is one of the first instances of James capturing the emotion of Selected Ambient Works Volume II and repackaging it into a beat and melody driven piece. Worth it for this track alone, I Care Because You Do is one of the essential records in any true head's collection. Recommended.

Another essential IDM album, another feather in the cap for Aphex Twin. His fourth full length as Aphex Twin finds the storied producer moving further away from the ambient of his earlier releases and diving head on into drum n bass territory. James' innate ability to combine emotive melodies with intricate drum programming is showcased on the Richard D. James Album, the apex of this being "To Cure A Weakling Child." "Goon Gumpas" provides the antidote for the heavy drum machine wizardry with its string figure leading the charge. The mid 90s seem to be an era when Aphex Twin could do no wrong. The techno bad boy led the charge of the IDM world, lived in a bank and even bought a tank. Many of the tracks on the Richard D. James Album were picked up by ad agencies and used in commercials. The US government even turned to Aphex Twin and used the album opener "4" in an anti-drug PSA! Through all of this he maintained his individuality and gained an infamous reputation with music journalists. You can hear some of that come through on a few of the more goofy tunes such as album closer "Logan-Rock Witch." This being a true to form vinyl reissue of the original LP it is sadly lacking the chimerical "Milkman." But that should not dissuade you from picking this up. Crucial for the completest, an imperative for the collector. Recommended.

Nearly 20 years after its initial release, Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II has maintained its status as one of the landmark albums of electronic music. Picking up where Selected Ambient Works '85-'92 left off, it is appears that this album was composed over a much shorter period of time. There is more cohesion between the individual tracks and the record's sequencing leads to a grander statement than its predecessor. Although it may have confounded those fans looking for the intense gabber workouts and techno explorations that Aphex had made his mark with, Selected Ambient Works Volume II follows in the path set out by early electronic and ambient pioneers like Brian Eno, Erik Satie, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley with tremendous success. The pieces are at once eerie and soothing, balancing subtle dissonance with mournful drones. There's a dark and creepy underbelly to the whole affair. And while all that may sound dark and brooding, there is an uplifting quality to the work. The album was released without any track names, save for "Blue Calx," just a color coded chart for each side with an associated picture on the sleeve. Over the years fan impetus led to each track being given a name based on the image representing it (i.e. "Rhubarb" for track 3). Unfortunately, the elusive "Stone In Focus" - track E2 on the original vinyl release - is missing from this reissue. Selected Ambient Works Volume II is one of the highlights of Richard D. James' prolific career and a must for any fan of ambient electronic music. Includes a semi-gloss single-sided paper insert. Recommended.

The long-awaited compilation of tracks from left-field disco genius Arthur Russell has finally arrived from Soul Jazz, and despite a few minor reservations that only a confirmed disco nerd like myself could have, it's well worth the wait. Russell was a classically-trained cellist and composer steeped in the American experimental avant-garde tradition of composers like Philip Glass. He made some of the most compelling, challenging, and beautiful dance music ever committed to record after being turned on by visits to NYC clubs like the Loft, Gallery, and Paradise Garage. "Go Bang," recorded as Dinosaur L is present here in the superior Francois mix, is perhaps one of the most simultaneously atonal, dissonant, and funky records to ever become a dancefloor favorite– a maelstrom of near-free jazz dirty Rhodes chords and a driving four to the floor beat propelling ominous, desperate declarations that "I want to see all my friends at once/I wanna go bang!" It was a big Paradise Garage favorite, and its dark, druggy and sexy vibe was hugely influential to early house tracks like Sleazy D's "I've Lost Control." Russell's most well known track, Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face," shouldn't require too much of an introduction here, and if it does, just read my dissertation in the 12" review (I expect your 5-page paper with annotated sources next week, Spasticon). One of the greatest dance records ever, period. What distinguishes Russell as an artist (and further endears him to collectors) is the fact that he was also capable of creating softly beautiful tracks like "Keepin' Up," "In The Light Of The Miracle," and "Let's Go Swimming;" tracks that successfully integrated his interest in dance music with experimental, often minimalist compositions. "In The Light Of The Miracle" is one of the prizes of this collection; originally available on a stupid-rare promo-only pressing, "Miracle" is a serenely gorgeous, airily restrained 13-minute epic that defies categorization or description. Also includes essential, tough–to-find gems like "Pop Your Funk" (see 12" review), and "Wax The Van." The few minor complaints I have (the omission of Russell's first release, "Kiss Me Again" by Dinosaur, lack of material from the rare "World Of Echo" LP, weird track sequencing) are completely mollified by the dearth of brilliant material here, and the sheer value that the collection gives. Highly, highly recommended. 11 tracks spread over 3 LPs.

The AT-PL60 is an excellent value and has been a bestseller at our store for several years now. This feature-packed turntable comes with everything you need out of the box including cartridge and cables. The USB output allows for easy plug and play usage with your computer (Audacity software included for PCs, MAC users can download it for free online). In addition, the aluminum platter is a great feature (most turntables at this price range have a light, plastic platter), and the included dual magnet cartridge is also an upgrade at this price range. Lastly, the most key feature for out of the box users is the built-in switchable phono/line preamp that allows connection to a stereo system equipped with either a phono or line-level input (most turntables you have to have a separate pre-amp or amplifier with turntable input). What a flashback! My friend let's me borrow this World Famous Beat Junkies mixTAPE (actual cassette) back in 1999 and a half an hour after getting it, I'm laying in my car listening to the whole damn thing. I couldn't get over the fast cuts, the sick hip hop selections, the drops, juggles, and scratch solos. Babu straight fucked my head up, just like he did an entire generation of scratch DJ's and turntablists. He along with J-Rocc, Melo-D, Rhettmatic, and D-styles defined the signature LA DJ style, and their sound has reached far and wide. Still sounds so fresh on this crisp CD version of the original mixtape on my desk. The sounds are like liquid nostalgia and the vibe is still on point. Nobody puts work into mixes like this anymore. This could be recorded on an 8 track mixer for all I know. Expect all the indy hip hop hits that defined the era, flipped, mixed and reconstructed by Babu: Arsonists' "The Session," Jungle Brothers' "How You Want It - Remix," Charizma & PB Wolf's "My World Premiere," Siah & Yeshua Dapo ED's "Gravity," J-Live's "Braggin' Writes," Kool Keith's "Lovely Lady," Eastflatbush Project's "Tried By 12," and much more. Hits hits hits. This comp spans over 15 years of hits that from the teenage starburst "Shine Eye Gal" (1979) all the way to the surprisingly spry "Living Dangerously" with Bounty Killer (1995). In between you have massive tunes such as "Murderer (Original Mix), Black Roses," and "Under Mi Sensi." It doesn't stop there with Junjo-staples "Prison Oval Rock, Shine Eye Gal," and "No Fuss No Fight." (The obvious exclusion is "Here I Come (Broader Than Broadway)," but you should look for that one on 7 or 12 inch anyway.) 14 tracks in all.

Super deluxe 180g double LP pressing of "Check Your Head." Best Beastie's album ever? I guess you can debate it, but there's no arguing that this one is definitely up there. I can go on about it, but better yet read what we said about it when we got an import pressing a couple years back: "Out of print for a while now, we jumped at this UK repress of my favorite Beasties album. That's right, fuck Paul's Boutique and Wesleyan College. The Beasties live the American dream here, picking up instruments and playing skater thrash band, badass black funk-rock band, and crafty city rappers, all at the same time. I'm not quite sure there's anything else quite like it. Even though I've gotten tired of the aging cult of Beastie, I still put this on when I want to get hyped up for heated recreational sports sessions (that's right chall!). Every track is standout, but if I have to assign those pesky blue numbers, it would go something like this:  "Jimmy James, Gratitude, Somethin's Got To Give, Stand Together," and "Groove Holmes." Double vinyl. Recommended." Worrd.

Way back when I was still in high school I remember highly anticipating the release of the Beastie Boys' Ill Communication. After pretty much wearing through the tapes for Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head, I was in desperate need of some more Beastie Boys material. The day it was released I think I cut out of school in the middle of the day and made my way towards Amoeba in Berkeley to get my fix. One of the stand out tracks was "Get It Together" with the Eugene McDaniels sample and Q-tip trading off verses, a classic piece of hip hop history. The Buckwild Remix brings some real D.I.T.C. magic to the affair. He might just be one of the most under rated producers of his era. Frequent Beasties collaborator Mario Caldato Jr. flips the Grand Funk Railroad "Nothing Is The Same" sample for the A.B.A. Remix. You also get album cut "Resolution Time" and the inescapable "Sabotage." Includes instrumentals for "Get It Together" and the remixes. Classic material.

Now available on remastered, 180g vinyl! Nice and loud double LP pressing of Ill Communication complete with perfectly reproduced artwork. This album caught the Beasties in top creative form - experimenting with the music, but still keeping the quality high and their feet grounded, no matter what style they attempted. It not only contains some of their hypest crossover tracks ever like "Sabotage" and "Sure Shot," but also the super funky Q-Tip collabo "Get It Together" and the hard Biz Mark collab "Do It." Jazzy breakbeat groovers like "Root Down" and "The Scoop" are also present as well as some of their early instrumental jazz-funk-fusion noodlings ("Ricky's Theme" and "Sabrosa") and tracks that hark back to their punk rocker days ("Heart Attack Man"). 20 tracks total, worth every penny.

Probably my favorite single off the first Beastie album, I always loved the combo of the shout-along powerhouse "No Sleep" with the semi-cutesy "She's Crafty." Now, I've been a reactionary Beasties hater for years now (those fans, and those last couple albums, woah), but stuff off Licensed To Ill is like worldwide property. It's so far removed from what they're doing now and so ingrained in the "very fiber" of any late 20-something (or old man 30 something like me) that you really can't pass judgment on it. This shit exists in an indestructible bubble.

Every couple years, a new wave of Beastie Boys reissues comes out- some legit, some imported and reconfigured, some that die with their boots on- presenting the collector / dj with an ever expanding universe of Beastie possibilities. Need "Cookie Puss" and the instrumental for "Pass The Mic" on one twelve inch? It's probably out there somewhere. Even the trail of official Def Jam singles is maddeningly robust (there's at least 3 configurations for every single off the first album- check Discogs), but at the end of the day, the reason why there's so much Beastie's stuff is cause these things never get old. The shit from the first album can be whatever you want it to (so flexible): floor filler, remix fodder, jock jams, white people funk, karaoke fire starter, etc. This one sticks to the original configuration, with "Paul Revere" on one side, "It's The New Style" on the other, with instrumentals for both. Side 1 is mislabeled.

Again a non-lp remix job, this time utilizing some Donald Byrd soul. The Beatminerz on production took the simple obvious shit and flipped it into classic material. Read somewhere that producers would come up to them and be like "damn, wish I flipped that first." Sometimes genius is seeing the obvious. They used to play this track at the old Giant Step parties mixed in the acid jazz beats. Definitely in my top 10 singles of all time. Welcome to Bucktown USA where the weak get dissed everyday. Remix, Instrumental with "Murder MCs" on the flip.

Another classic Black Moon 12". Its very telling that none of these classic 12" is more classic than the others- indicative of the Beatminerzs board supremacy back in 93. Again another obvious but simply genius Blue Note sample (Ronnie Laws Tidal Wave) lays down the jazzy vibe for this floor jumper. The b-side is "Fuck It Up," a 12" exclusive cut that has always been one of my favorite instrumentals. Instrumentals included for both tracks including the MW Smooth Mix (altered drums) of "Who Got the Props."

Crate Digging 101. Two undisputed classics from Bob James back to back on 12". When it comes to James' much sampled catalog, it doesn't get much more essential then "Mardi Gras" and "Nautilus." Upgrade that old worn out Alpha Omega copy with this one that has convincing CTI labels. Cop doubles and get busy!

Let's get one thing straight - I hate Turntable Lab. They suck. They dig through your crates, pick the hottest shit, order it - and sell it to every fucking geek in Kansas. With that said, I gotta give it up to Bozo Meko, cause this record is the shit. I was probably wearing Spidey Man undies and pissin in my bed when this shit came out, but I gotta review it. Word is that Mark the 45 King did all this edits on here, but I'm not positive. The A side is just "The Bridge Is Over": 3 mixes, who cares. Flip it over for the real. "Brazillian Rhyme," the classic, gets edited and extended, making it one of the top 5 feel-good party songs of all time. I swear by this shit. Next is the classic Take 6 "Spread Love" remixed with those infamous drums. Finally, we get a re-edit of Mandrill's "Fence Walk," a dope cut that gets too wild to mix if you play the original, here walla re-edited for easier mixing. I can't say enough about how essential this record is (sorry no crap about other Bozo releases and how rare they are).
