Reissue of one of the of the most sough-after and influential Detroit dance records from the early 80's. A Number Of Names' "Sharevari" is one of those classic dance records that ends up on everyone's list eventually, yet is frustratingly tough to find on OG press. Originally recorded back in 1981 at the crossroads of disco, new wave, house, and techno - the track fused lo-fi drums, sinister synths, and raw vocals to create a unique and freaky vibe unlike anything else at the time. As the story goes, "Sharevari" is a song about the stylish, forward-thinking Detroit club scene, specifically a club called Charivari (named after a New York clothing store), that laid the groundwork for the techno revolution to come. See the video below for a glimpse into this scene. The track still kills it to this day, and always manages to bring all the real freaks out on the floor! Includes the original vocal version with the instrumental on the flip. Essential.

I really lost my shit when I first heard this. Heads in the know tell you that this their best, most complete album. No weaklings, just solid beats and lyrics like 2 day old shit. Excursions, Buggin Out, Rap Promoter, Butter, Verses From the Abstract, Show Business, Vibes and Stuff, The Infamous Date Rape, Check The Rhime, Everything Is Fair, Jazz (We Got), Skypager, What?, Scenario.

Absolutely no Harlem Shaking was done while recording this record. A$AP Rocky caused waves of commotion via the interwebz in 2011/12 with the release of his mixtape 'Live.Love.ASAP.'producing one of the best Southern Rap records in the last 5 years. The only odd thing about that is he is from New York. This being his major label debut and him moving to LA doesn't change the dark, brooding sound that producer Clams Casino helped him champion just a year ago. Carrying most of the album on his shoulders, you can't have a rap album without guests. Santigold, A$AP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar, 2Chainz, Drake, even Skrillex dropped in. Stand out tracks include the Hit Boy produced 'Goldie', title track 'Long.Live.A$AP' is ridiculously banging, posse rap cut 'F*cking Problems', + the Skrillex co-produced 'Wild For The Night' is dubsteppy... but we can easily overlook that for Rocky. The album comes packaged in a beautiful gatefold sleeve with insert 2x12 translucent orange vinyl pressing. Recommended.

This guy can't lose right now. From killing it around the globe on the ones and twos, collaborating with Armand as half of Duck Sauce, and co-founding one of the biggest indie labels (Fool's Gold), A-Trak is kind of ruling the DJ scene. His latest release on Fool's Gold is "Money Makin'," a collab track with Mad Decent's Dillon Francis destined to tear it up from the club to the stadium and everything in between. Riding a super-catchy electro house beat with chant-able raps, you can pretty much play this in any setting to raise the feel-good energy levels through the roof. On the flip comes the dirty raps of "Piss Test" with Juicy J and Danny Brown holding down mic duties properly. This one might not be as party-friendly, but definitely something to roll too. Includes instrumental and accapella for "Piss Test," and radio edit for "Money Makin'." Comes on limited split colored vinyl. Recommended.

A couple fresh mixes of Aaron "FIT" Siegel's detroit house hit. The first release of "Tonite" on FHXE has been killing it for a minute, and now we are treated to two more mixes for further dancefloor wrecking. The OG Mix is similar too the original mix on the FHXE 12", but with less vocals and a solid intro for mixing. Definitely the one to play out. The DD mix is on the flip and totally reconstructs the groove from the ground up for a different, somewhat deeper, but equally effective, feel. Features L'Renee on the vox and Omar-S on the mix and the edit.

In-demand white label spawns the offical pic-sleeve single from the joint collaboration of Werk Discs and Ninja Tune. Love this new approach from Actress: it's super-textural, chill out music that brings Aphex Twin to mind. The 11 minute plus "Voodoo Posse Chronic Illusion" initially starts jaggedly, but Actress is able to transform the zigs and pops into a hypnotic calm. "Floating In Ecstasy" pops off immediately, sounding like a build-up to a medieval battle. Does anything else sound like this? The final cut, "Dream Come True", is my favorite here: super-sluggish like wearing a extra-heavy mink coat. Look out for the Ghettoville album coming later this year. Recommended.

Mick Boogie, author of such great mixtapes as Broiled Salmon (Ghostface) and Brooklyn Soul (Jay-Z vs. Marvin), brings his hip-hop blend skills to this excellent Adele remix album. Adele's 19 is undeniable; chubby white newcomers don't win Grammies (she did). Dubsteppers have targeted Adele several times with remixes, but this is the first hip-hop style remix I've heard. It's super crisp and refreshing and can be summed up on "Day Dreams" which is blended with Slick Rick beats. Throw in Boogie's blend tricks, and it's an instant scratch-off winner. Boogie goes as far as adding emcees, check "Chasing 1988" with Nas samples and original lyrics by 6th Sense and "First Love" with Naledge. I also like how Boogie maintains the classic blend style using Al Green drums on "Melt My Hear," the Sucker MC's break on "Tired," and even some Long Red on the dowtempo-version of "Make You Feel My Love(6)." 9 tracks in all, recommended.

LAB REVIEW

The TMA-1 Studio Headphones are based on our most popular and bestselling DJ headphone, the TMA-1 DJ Headphones. The Studio model takes all the proven strengths of the TMA-1 and adds the studio monitor functionality. The two main features of a quality studio monitor are comfort (for long critical listening sessions) and a neutral / flat sound output (we'll explain this later in review). In terms of comfort, the Studios feature enlarged, over-the-ear ear cups that come in both foam and synthetic leather. The foam ear cups are better for sound isolation, while the synthetic leather ones give you a bit more comfort. In terms of sound response, the Studios deliver a quality flat output, meaning the sound is equally balanced between low, mid, and high frequencies. When you create music, you want to make sure your sound is flat to ensure it sounds good on all systems. Think of it as the baseline, so when someone plays your song on a boombox or a high end stereo system, your sound will be balanced (the user can always up the bass or treble).

What does a flat response actually sound like? In terms of the TMA-1 Studios, for everyday usage you probably won't notice the difference. In fact, the Studios will sound crisp and clear, much better than most standard headphones out there. For DJing, you will not notice much of a difference except a bit less bass (but still plenty enough to DJ with). The label "studio montiors" should not dissuade you from purchasing these for any application. The bottom line is that they sound great and they would be awesome to have on your desk or in the airport. Please Note that studio monitors like these are "big" headphones, they may not be the best for everyday commuters.

BUTTON FUNCTION

When used with an iPhone / Blackberry the button works with a single push to answer incoming calls and hang up. As Akai's answer the Korg's Nano series, the LPD8 holds up very well and actually has a few advantages. While both feature ulra-slim profiles and portability, the LPD8 combines pads AND knobs in one unit (although the knobs are rather short) whereas you would have to buy 2 Nanos (the PAD and KONTROL) to get these features with Korg. It is also slightly shorter than the nanoPAD and features a nice matte finish with rounded corners. Recommended.

For their latest collaboration, the label has compiled all 5 volumes(!) of Kent's Disco Demands series into one massive 5 CD set (and you know if anyone has enough rare disco gems to fill 5 CDs worth of material, it's Al Kent). Along with impossible to find original cuts the compilation features a ton of exclusive re-edits that Kent has made a name for himself with. Here's what he had to say about the release: "The Disco Demands series started sometime in the early 2000s - I couldn't give you an exact year because it didn't feel like a big deal, so I never noted it. I simply wanted to put out a compilation of some records I really liked and maybe make a little of the money back I was spending on them. Buy some food and stuff. There's always been Disco comps around of course but there was rarely anything that strayed too far from the standards; the same songs kept appearing over and over again, or the comps would feature records you could pick up anywhere for little money. I've never seen the point in that. I gave up judging a record on its value or rarity a long time ago but surely there's more to disco than Exodus, Martin Circus, Mass Production and all those Salsoul, West End and bloody Prelude records. So it was a nice surprise to find that there were other people out there who thought the same way. Volume 1 was pretty straightforward - just some nice records, with the only edit being an instrumental of "Disco Socks"; a strange, thinly veiled reference to the disco sucks movement. Italo synth-pop classic repressed! This is Mr. Robotnick's most famous album containing his biggest hit "Problems D'Amour" which has been moving dance floors for decades now. The rest of the album doesn't slouch either with other gems including "Dance Boy Dance," and "Hola Macci Kola." Super clean pressing on 180g vinyl, with hand numbered pic sleeves - limited to 500 copies. Considering that this came out in 1984 and he's still doing remixes for people today( including Fool's Gold), I'd say that's pretty damn influential! Do yourself a favor and pick this up while it lasts. Highly Recommended.

Aloe Blacc is back and now he's got a live band backing him, namely Truth And Soul's The Expressions and El Michels Affair. The result is "I Need A Dollar" and it sounds amazing as Aloe is proving to be a true soul man, just look at him on that cover! Much more than just an average rehash of retro styles, this is authenic soul that everyone can relate to (especially these days). Limited black label pressing of Aloe Blacc's "Your Love Is Killing Me" as re-imagined by Mano Le Tough. The Berlin-based producer gives the track a hypnotic and moody house make over that takes the vibe much deeper, while maintaining the soul of the original. This one has been in high demand ever since it made its rounds on digital venues. No doubt this will win the crowd over on a discerning dance floor! One-sided vinyl pressing via Permanent Vacation, recommended.

Maybe you're looking at the cover of Alternative Funk and wondering what the hell it is. Don't be ashamed, I did the same thing when it came in. Back in 1984 a label called Vox Man compiled these tracks and stamped that label on them. It's turned into a highly sought after document of what these days gets called minimal wave from around the world. There's a bunch of great material on here. From the stretched out funk of Randal Kennedy's "Smith's Room" to the mutant deconstructed Casio on "Control Panel" by Process Blue there are some truly inspired moments. One of the most crowd pleasing tracks on the comp is the "Genius Of Love" aping "Fitness School" from Tranquil Eyes. But the tracks are all over the place, giving you bits of punk-funk, new wave and experimental electro. Some of the most recognized groups on here are going to be Vox Populi! and Psyclones who both deliver on the synth funk promise even if it gets a little off kilter at times. This is clearly a must have for anyone who is bent on catching up with underground music from the past. Recommended.

Mind-blowing compilation of vintage afro sounds courtesy of Frankfurt's excellent Analog Africa imprint. Afro-Beat Airways: West African Shock Waves Ghana & Togo 1972-1978 features an impeccable selection of rare organ-driven Afro-beat, cosmic Afro-funk and raw, psychedelic boogie, primed and ready to scorch your ears and the dancefloor. To put these tracks together, Samy Ben Redjeb, founder of Analog Africa, crisscrossed the lengths of Ghana and Togo in search of the producers and artists ǃ or their relatives. In the process he recorded a dozen interviews, scanned 90 pictures and transferred 120 master tapes! The result is this amazing collection of songs totaling in 73 minutes of heavy West African sounds AND a 44-page full color booklet that highlights each artist with photos and anecdotes. Features tracks from K.Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas, Apagya Show Band, Rob, Cos-Ber-Zam, De Frank Professionals, Uppers International, Ebo Taylor and many more. Anyone with even a passing interest in vintage African Music would do well to check this out! Recommended.

Analog dopeness from the depths of Brooklyn, Red Hook to be exact! That's where the Analog Players Society studio resides and where they recorded this prime slice of broken beat-house-jazz fusion. The live element is what really shines through here as the skittering drums set the pace, then that fat bass synth kicks it and hits right on time with Cecilia Stalin's lovely scat style vocals. Finally Ethan White's keyboard work ties it all together as the cherry on top, uplifting the vibe of any club / lounge / bar scenario. On a side note, they really couldn't have been more timely with that title, what with Sandy's recent visit to our fair borough! Includes the instrumental version on the flip, exclusive to this 45. Recommended.

Here's a little something from Detroit that we were able to get our hands on. Deep and jazzy house workouts from A Drummer From Detroit (bka Andres). There's a heavy Latin influence throughout most of the two sides with the last few minutes of side 2 descending into some prototypical, yet decidedly catchy Andres style house. Loose, sample based and downright funky. Not to be missed. Recommended.

Classic material from Andres and Mike Grant repressed! These days, Detroit producer/DJ Andres needs little to no introduction. His "New For U" 12" was easily one of the biggest records of 2012, and everything he touches is solid. Now unless you were up on your Detroit house back in the early 2000's, chances are you slept on Andres' "Out In The Open" 12". Lucky for you Moods & Grooves has repressed the track for the debut volume of their Classics series, and it still bumps some 10+ years later with an irresistibly funky, soul-infused vibe. Flipside takes it deeper with the Mr. G "There's Hope mix" of Mike Grant's "Struggle For My People," originally released back in 2001. Recommended.

Debut release from Andres' own freshly minted La Vida label. For those that don't recognize the name, Andres has been killing it for years now as a producer with releases on Moodymann's Mahogani and KDJ imprints to more recently with those MJ reworks on Spills. As DJ Dez, he's also respected as one of Detroit's finest DJ's (he's Slum Village's DJ too) working it behind the decks like no other. So really it should come as no surprise that with his first release on his own label, Andres comes through with that heat! On "New For U," Dez blends soulful strings with a bumping disco house groove to get the party feelin' right. Next up "Drama On The Corner" bumps with deep burning soul loops over tough, steppin' drums, while "Jazz Dance" turns it up one mo 'gin on a feel good jazzy house tip. Detroit represent! Recommended.

Andrés follows up his stunning New For U 12" with his second offering on his own La Vida imprint. "Skate This Way" is a house track that continues his tasteful use of strings with an effort that is sure to ignite the dancefloor. Both "Second Time Around" and "Hart Plaza" were originally released on KDJ Records. However, we get new versions with additional keys courtesy of Detroit's own Amp Dog Knight (bka Amp Fiddler). It's a release that will leave you wanting more from Andrés. Recommended.

UK vocalist Andrew Ashong makes his vinyl debut on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature. He goes even further collaborating with Parrish himself on the lead track "Flowers." Ashong definitely has a sweet Shuggie Otis-type quality to it, and the instrumentation is a perfect blend of rnb and future Detroit styles. Also features "Take It Slow" with some Zapp-esque basslines, and the acoustic-bap of "The Way She Moves." Recommended.

Friend of the Lab Andrew Kuo creates work that embodies the Lab. His perfectionist / imperfectionist charts remind me both of Peter Seville record covers and the nano-thought processing speed of a record nerd. This first anthology of his work collects a grip of those highly acclaimed graphic charts (as featured in the New York Times) plus his more painterly endeavors. But beyond the musical connection, Kuo's work really taps into the complex post-collegiate life we're all trying to navigate. After examining several of his charts, you'll really get a sense of Kuo, bright mismatched colors and all. Essential for music heads, art lubbers, grid mongers, and all of the above. Hardcover, 12.2 x 11.2 x 1.2", 208 pages. RECOMMENDED. 

Andy Stott's latest for label Modern Love continues in the dark, Dub Techno format we have come to know from his previous two efforts. The difference with his newest offering is the featured vocal performance from his childhood piano teacher. The unusual request seemed to be a perfect match, with her breathy, angelic vocals adding another layer that contrasts the heavy oceanic bass with a lighter mood. The album is not chipper in any sense, but it is his most accessible album to date. Luxury Problems is the perfect soundtrack for the oncoming Winter months. Beautiful, yet menacingly harsh at the same time. Recommended.

Now repressed on clear emerald vinyl. Andy Stott's universally praised Passed Me By was originally released back in 2011 and pretty much single-handedly raised the bar on the dub techno / slow house front (people are still trying to catch up). His slow and meticulously produced tracks take you to another world, one that is far from removed from the typical bump of the dancefloor, but a rather disjointed reality of seemingly unrelated sounds that somehow meld into a cohesive whole. Like me, you might not "get it" right off the bat, but you are well rewarded once you let go and allow the sounds to take over. 7 tracks in all, housed in incredible pic sleeve. Highly recommended.
