Absolutely no Harlem Shaking was done while recording this record. A$AP Rocky caused waves of commotion via the interwebz in 2011/12 with the release of his mixtape 'Live.Love.ASAP.'producing one of the best Southern Rap records in the last 5 years. The only odd thing about that is he is from New York. This being his major label debut and him moving to LA doesn't change the dark, brooding sound that producer Clams Casino helped him champion just a year ago. Carrying most of the album on his shoulders, you can't have a rap album without guests. Santigold, A$AP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar, 2Chainz, Drake, even Skrillex dropped in. Stand out tracks include the Hit Boy produced 'Goldie', title track 'Long.Live.A$AP' is ridiculously banging, posse rap cut 'F*cking Problems', + the Skrillex co-produced 'Wild For The Night' is dubsteppy... but we can easily overlook that for Rocky. The album comes packaged in a beautiful gatefold sleeve with insert 2x12 translucent orange vinyl pressing. Recommended.

It's a meeting of the Adrians on vinyl for this limited Ubiquity RSD 12"! Arian Younge, who is best known for his funky work on the Black Dynamite OST and Venice Dawn, teams up with the prolific Adrian Quesada (of Echocentrics, Ocote Soul Sounds, Brownout and grammy-winning Grupo Fantasma) for a split EP of deep soulful cuts to move your mind, body and soul. When it comes to modern funk and soul with a classic aesthetic, these two are at the top of the food chain. Includes "The Love I Got" and "Last Word" with instrumentals for both on the flip. Animal Collective achieved widespread success with 2009's Merriweather Post Pavilion but have just released a handful of singles since then. Needless to say Centipede HZ has been a highly anticipated release since Deakin rejoined the group in 2010. The four members of Animal Collective moved back to their hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, in early 2011, to begin writing and recording the album. They traded in some of the pop sensibilities and ambient moments of Merriweather Post Pavilion for a more "live-band-feel," employing instruments like pianos and drum-kits. The result is a return to their more experimental roots, with traces of psychedelic rock, garage, and the avant-garde. With so many elements at play the music can come off cacophonously at first. There is a lot to take in, but for the tenacious listener the rewards are numerous. There are some transcendental indie rock songs hiding out beneath all of the chaos. Centipede HZ is all abstract expressionism in sonic form. Not quite as surreal as some of it's predecessors, but twisted and garish enough to make you like it.

If you're any sort of Animal Collective fan you've probably already added this baby to your cart. Their first real noise as a group since 2009's much lauded Merriweather Post Pavilion and it seems to be that it was worth the wait. The tracks play like two sides of the same coin. "Honeycomb" brings the positive, upbeat vibes that my upstairs neighbors seem intent on trying to recreate on a daily basis. The vocals are all super chatty but the pulsing cacophony the makes the bed of the track does a more than stellar job of keeping up. On the flip "Gotham" is like the cough syrup cousin, where everything is stretched out as far as it can go. Super deluxe marbled paper sleeve. Don't sleep.

Ariel Pink Haunted Graffiti return with their sophoromore effort for 4AD. Following 2010's highly regarded Before Today comes Mature Themes, a return to form of sorts for Ariel & Co. While Before Today found the band cleaning up their act with better (or less gritty) studio recordings and more accessible arrangements, Mature Themes brings back more of the lo-fi weirdness people loved Ariel Pink for in the first place. Influences range from 60's pop to AM radio gold, to lost slow jam gems (check "Baby," a duet with Dam-Funk!), and 70's psychedelic oddities. It's sort of a mixed bag as styles change from track to track, some retaining the bumpy disco vibe of the last album, while some throw out the beat all together in lieu of droning ambience ("Nostradamus & Me"). However you might feel about Ariel's stuff, one thing is certain - no one else is coming close to making anything that sounds like this! Well worth repeat listens for the open-minded listener.

Triple colored vinyl repress for Record Store Day 2013! Not only do you get hooked up with three different colored vinyls featuring the vocal versions and instrumentals for this limited pressing of A Quest To The Pharcyde, but you also get a special slipmat featuring the Bizarre Tribe logo. That should easily seal the deal, but if you're still hesitant to add to cart, it is rumored that only 150 copies were made, so act fast! Our original review: A full album of Tribe x Pharcyde mash-ups from Amerigo Gazaway. Ya'll should remember Amerigo from his last mash-up effort Fela Soul, and here on Bizarre Tribe he puts those blending skills to work on classics from two legendary rap groups. The combination of Tribe and Pharcyde works perfectly like peanut butter & jelly as heard on "Runnin," (now with the beat of "Electric Relaxation") "Bonita Keeps Passin' Me By" ("Bonita Applebum" raps over "Passin Me By"), "Ya Mama And Stuff," and "Otha Otha Fish." The flawless mixing and matching of raps and beats makes every track on here a win-win situation. Think of these as classics that never were, from a parallel universe. Recommended for hip-hop heads and mashup fans alike.

Beach House seeming keen on metaphor, have titled their latest as a description of their sound's progression, refinement, and maturing. Bloom, the band's fourth album and second on Indie stalwarts Sub Pop, is what it says it is, the flowering of a carefully crafted sound. With their lush, almost languid compositions, Beach House has always been a band that effortlessly wins over the ears of its audience, it's cinematic, impressionable, moody music. Victoria LeGrande's Nico-like, but softer, vocals have always glided over a delicate interplay of guitar and organ melodies. But with Bloom, and what has been gradually developed throughout their previous efforts, the instrumentation has grown and transitioned into its own. No longer are their songs intimate but crude bedroom recordings, LeGrande and instrumentalist Alex Scally are now taking advantage of studio sound, precise mixes, live, full drums, etc. And beyond that, an intimacy does manage to live on in the songcraft, LeGrande's lyrics, her vocal delivery, the band's incessant penchant for the sentimental. The album's most direct pop offering, "Other People" is an example of how the band will continue to pull us in, to suddenly empathize with the song's feelings. Its simple but irresistible hook, repeated effortlessly throughout, has the listener suddenly within its grasp. The album, then, is not unlike being arrested in a film's unfolding plot, a novel's heart wrenching narrative. From its opening Chapter, "Myth", to its delicate, secret (see "locked grooves") closing pages, Bloom will have you pleasantly stuck.

Hot Sauce Committee Pt.2! The 8th studio album from Beastie Boys - which actually contains songs that were supposed to be on Pt.1 (coming at some point in the future) - displays the iconic New York trio in all its animated pass-the-mike glory, with rhymes and beats that conjure the group's vintage sounds without coming across outdated or irrelevant. The funky keyboard-driven "Make Some Noise" is an instant party classic, and "Too Many Rappers" features Nasty Nas trading verses with Mike D, MCA, Ad-Rock; the four come together like "peanut butter and sandwiches." "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win" with Santigold is a breezy reggae-flavored cut, and the band pays tribute to its punk days (as well as the Six Million Dollar Man, obviously) with "Lee Majors Come Again". All the smack talking on the hook-less "Nonstop Disco Powerpack" is just awesome, and "Crazy Ass Shit," which is characterized by the child chorus hook, is another standout track. Most of the vocals the album are processed with a mixture of distortion, echo, and creative EQ-ing (courtesy of Phillippe Zdar), resulting in a raw, snarl-y product, and combined with the fact that the Beasties "sound hungrier than most musicians currently posting their first internet demos," Hot Sauce is exactly what the fans have been waiting for. This double LP version comes on 180g white vinyl with a 7" disc with 2 bonus tracks! Highly Recommended.

I feel biased writing about this. Being from the Golden State, I'm an easy target for singer Bethany Cosentino and guitar Bob Bruno's good-time anthems. With a strength in simplicity, and building on what the two started with on their debut, Crazy for You, the duo don't strive much newness here, and that's perfectly fine. The Only Place confronts a direction often mishandled, one that can lead to not-much-more than generic deviation, been there heard that. But with Cosentino's passion for the basics, this works. Her odes to California, to hanging out, all juvenile and sweet, somehow escape the doldrums of pop music's incessant repeating of itself. I think it's in their comfortability with what they are, that it escape irony or convention. Anyhow, and more importantly, it's an album full to the brim of melodies that you'll find yourself humming. These are songs built on basic structures, Bruno's guitar hooks, bopping along drums and basslines, earnest vocal sing-alongs. Highlights include “No One Like You", "Let's Go Home", sounds that almost conjure up a Spingsteen-inspired band playing at your imaginary college party, some strange but earnest combination of 90s indie rock and Beach Boys era surf- pop. It may all sound too cheeky at first glance, but give it a good listen on a hot summer's day and try to tell me it isn't exactly what you needed. Recommended, and beyond seasonally; a fundamentally fun record.

Bob Marley's less than two year span (1970-71) of recording with Lee Perry is undoubtedly his finest work and a magical moment in music history. These sessions have been bastardized with poorly executed cd comps and poor quality vinyl pressings (thus, the straight forward "Best Of The Upsetter Years" CD goes for a lot money, go figure). Enter our favorite Russian reissue label Lilith with this deluxe 180g pressing with CD version included (in addition, the CD features 3 bonus dub versions!). At 14 tracks, it's pretty thorough (no "Small Axe" however) and cleanly executed. Feel the magic, recommended.

With Awesome Tapes From Africa's second official release the label continues to shed light on music outside of the typical high-life and Afro-beat genres. It's refreshing to hear that there is more to African music than what usually makes it to mainstream Western ears. Here's what Brian Shimkovitz of Awesome Tapes From Africa had to say: Bola's music melds sheer force of spirit with a sound not often heard by ears outside the remote Upper East Region of Ghana. This man who grew up herding livestock in the savannah, far away from the tropical coast and cosmopolitan cities of Accra and Kumasi, has aligned himself with national and international means of expression to transform his hometown sound into something downright avant-garde. His bold fury stems from the kologo—a two-stringed lute with a calabash gourd resonator— and Frafra language vocals, emitted in raspy bursts. Traditionally, kologo performances occur at pito (local beer made from fermented millet or sorghum) bars, weddings, funerals, festivals or spontaneous jams on the street, which are the environments where Bola honed his craft as a solo musician. In recent years, he came into contact with people like his mentor Guy One who helped him get into the studio to document what is some of the most dynamic music to come out of Ghana since the emergence of hiplife in the mid-'90s. Volume 7, which came out in 2009, is just one entry in a brilliant series of recordings Bola has released on CD and cassette. Although he employs a traditional instrument and the age-old mode of griot story-telling, Bola embraces elements of up-tothe- minute mainstream Ghanaian music—drum machines, synths, bone-shaking bass. Inspired by pioneering kologo greats like King Ayisoba, Bola has taken a dynamic instrument used by traditional healers and herbalists to sing to god in search of advice and taken it to futuristic heights. Recommended.

Broadcast's soundtrack to Peter Strickland's horror film Berberian Sound Studio, finally in on import Warp wax! This original soundtrack had been in the works since before singer Trish Keenan's sad and untimely passing in 2011. The band ultimately completed the work using recordings made with Keenan, and the result is absolutely stunning. As a dense collection of short soundscapes and fractured interludes, this incredible, yet haunting piece picks up where their collaboration with The Focus Group (2009's Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age) left of. Gone are the quirky synth pop vibes from earlier works, fully replaced by eerie strings, creeping organs, and general sounds of terror and fear. Fans of Italian horror soundtrack masters Goblin, Popol Vuh, or even Portishead will have plenty to wrap their head around here. As you might expect, this soundtrack ended up being the perfect accompaniment to an incredible film. 39 tracks in all with free MP3 download, recommended.

Cookin' Gumbo is Captain Planet's first full-length on Bastard Jazz. The album expands on the vibe of his previous releases and explores the Captain's penchant for taking sounds from all corners of the globe and applying his hip-hop production sensibilities to making dancefloor/electronic music. Things open up on "Ram Ad Infinitum" with deep and spiritual Hindu vibes, complemented by a hard-hitting drum break and buzzing synths. Next up is "Get You Some," a catchy, sure-fire bossa-nova with vocals from up-and-coming LA soulstress Brit Lauren. The Brazilian vibe continues with the funky "Macumba," the party-starting, drum'n'bass/hip-hop-in-Rio style of "Fumando," and "Samba Radiante 2011," a total dancefloor reconstruction of a popular track from the Captain's first EP. Next we're off to Africa with "Ningane," a horn-driven slice of hard afro beat, and the electro Nigerian bomb that is "Lagos Speedway." We also call on Puerto Rico ( "Dame Agua," "Speakin' Nuyorican"), Japan ("One for Japan"), the funky American South ("Another Dollar," "On Yer Feet") and more on this funky worldwide journey.

Seventeen years after Chan Marshall's debut as Cat Power comes Sun, her ninth sutdio album. It's been six years since the release of The Greatest, her ode to her Southern roots that was recorded in Memphis. However, Sun does not find Cat Power looking in the same direction. Instead the singer and songwriter, who has gone through the trials and tribulations of adulthood, seems to be coming full circle and confronting the Cat Power of earlier releases. She's lived a life frought with stage fright, substance abuse, break-ups, and creative demons, and appears ready to break free of it all. Sun is the first Cat Power record to put synthesizers and drum programming up front and let the guitars take a rest. It's an album that exists outside of the current musical trends and still manages to be all Marshall's own. Incredible sophomore full length from Charles Bradley. If you heard 2011's No Time For Dreaming, then you already know Bradley is the truth. Now on Victim Of Love, "The Screaming Eagle of Soul" delivers more of that raw soul goodness you need in your life - moving past the previous themes of heartaches and pain to the great promise of hope and love. Bradley's voice just emanates soul, and paired with writer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Thomas "TNT" Brenneck, you've got an extremely potent combination that will lift your spirits anytime it's on. Check "Strictly Reserved For You," "Dusty Blue," "Confusion," "Hurricane," and "Victim Of Love." Seriously good stuff that demands heavy rotation, can't recommend it enough!

As Chrome Canyon, Morgan Z treads the fine line between Giorgio Moroder inspired soundtrack wizardry and overt retro futurism. The New York based artist became an obsessive analog synth collector after his glammy electro outfit Apes & Androids disbanded. Holed away in his his private Brooklyn studio he began to channel work of Vangelis and Wendy Carlos. He's remixed Phoenix, Passion Pit, and Foster the People, and turned out tripped out disco edits of George Benson and synthpop pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra. Elemental Themes is rife with analog synths, live drums, bass, guitar and Theremin all run through hand-built compressors, composed and arranged into a living, breathing whole. The artists you could call contemporaries to the Chrome Canyon sound would have to be early Air and Johnny Jewel's recent Symmetry project. But Chrome Canyon comes the closest to wholeheartedly embracing the soundtrack work of those legendary 80s synth pioneers. He does not shy away from the soaring leads and slowly pulsing rhythms. In fact he takes them to another place entirely, raising the bar for anyone who dare tread on his territory.

Referring to the title of his new full-length, Daedelus explains "I not only intended as a reflection of the LP itself, but also an outlook on life." In his career as a musician, he has never settled for the "drab factory pre-sets of genre," and this album is full of experimental beats that are custom-made to his envelope-pushing tastes. Just take a look at the guest list - Inara George (The Birds and The Bee) to Baths to Bilal. They provide diverse vocals over sometimes wobble bottomed, sometimes woozy psychedelia-laced, and other times melancholic and melody driven instrumentals that consist of complex and deep layers of sounds. From one track to the next, nothing remains same or ordinary, but Bespoke as a whole comes together and "fits perfectly," a testament to the genius of Daedelus. Truly some mind-blowing stuff here - for picks, check out "Overwhelmed," "One And Lonely," "Tailor-Made," "What Can You Do?," and "French Cuffs."

Double 180g pressing! Random Access Memories is easily one of the most anticipated releases in recent memory, and Daft Punk deliver in aces on all the hype. For their long awaited 4th studio album (the latest since 2005's Human After All), Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo call in legends of pop music history to help them create their most epic and ambitious work to date. From pioneering hit maker Nile Rodgers and synth icon Giorgio Moroder, to more recent super talents like Pharrell Williams, Panda Bear, and Chilly Gonzalez, Daft taps them all and take their sound to a whole new level with live instrumentation and complex arrangement - an evolution in electronic pop music. You probably already have "Get Lucky" with Pharrell and Nile on mental repeat, but checkout the funked out bump of "Doin' It Right" with Panda Bear," the arpeggio-laced disco odyssey that is "Giorgio By Moroder" featuring you know who, "Touch" and the throwback 80's vibe of "Fragments Of Time" with Todd Edwards. Smooth and sophisticated stuff throughout with the signature vocoder thrown in at just the right times. 13 tracks spread over two heavyweight LPs, housed in gatefold sleeve with booklet insert and download card. Recommended.

Full length debut from Dan Snaith's Daphni alias on his own Jiaolong imprint. Most people probably know Snaith from his other alias Caribou, but as Daphni, the Canadian producer explores dancefloor oriented realms to great success. Daphni first emerged on the scene with a 12" in 2011(already sought-after and pricey on discogs) and has since made waves with his unique and eclectic brand of dance floor music. Those that slept on the first Jiaolong 12" will be pleased to hear those tracks are contained on here on the full length, including the amazing soul-sampling jam "Yes, I Know," the heavy afro-fusion groove of "Ne Noya," and the lush polyrhythmic bounce of "Jiao." Further expanding the scope of Daphni's world are fresh tracks like "Ye Ye" that jacks it up with heavy bass rolls and tough drum programming, the hypnotizing synths of "Light," the drum heavy "Pairs," and the deep, textured goodness of "Ahora." Undoubtably dope material through and through that will work on the floor as well as the headphones. 9 tracks in all, recommended.

If you ever dreamed of taking a time machine to the mid 90s, rocking the mic at some underground show at La Pena in Berkeley and then smoke a bidi, Dave Dub is gonna be your shit! Forced to play shows with stoner metal bands because he was just to far gone for the rest of the hip hop community in San Jose, Dave Dub never really got his due in the 90s. Although there was plenty of communication with the proto-Stones Throw crew Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf, there was never any official deal, and Dub confined his particular brand of madness to cassette tape only. He disappeared from the scene after 92 and stopped caring about rap entirely. Eventually he headed to Jamaica to ride out Y2K (not a bad idea!) only to return to "San Hopeless." After nearly a decade apart he reunited with his original producer and collaborator, Tape Mastah Steph (who rumor has it that ex-Shipsetian Reals used to be roommates with). Steph convinced Dub to get back on the mic and return to the grit of his roots. The two created The Treatment using the tools they had back in the day - an SP-1200 and a vintage Ensoniq EPS. The results have a definite throwback feel that is reminiscent of the Bay Area underground scene of the 90s. However, Dave Dub's rhymes are more off kilter than the MCs of that era. The beats seem to have been conjured up out of some dark, murky swamp. The psychedelic hip hop of Dave Dub is a trip through the looking glass for any fan the underground West Coast scene.

Those that follow Deerhunter always know to brace themselves when the band drops a new album. Long known for stylistic jumps that take the band further down their own trail, each album appears as an artistic statement in its own right. So it may come as a surprise to some that instead of lurching ever forward Deerhunter has taken a left turn off course with Monomania. The album is dirty and raunchy, drenched in distortion and pure rock n roll. The ethereal bits of albums past have taken a backseat to the guitars and upfront vocals. They've definitely avoided repeating themselves and they've done so with great skill. And despite the slight detour, nobody is going to be disappointed. There are plenty of effective melodies and poignant lyrics. The album's unpredictability may be its greatest asset, as well. If Deerhunter had gone on to do what was expected of them I'm sure we all would have been a little disappointed. Monomania is a fitting piece of the puzzle for a band that has managed to consistently deliver greatness for the better part of the last decade.

Limited edition reissue for Record Store Day 2013! Now available for the first time on vinyl in the US. Destroyer's first release for Merge Records was a divisive point in front man Dan Bejar's career. Following the success of Streethawk: A Seduction, the Canadian moved from the Emeryville, CA based indie imprint Misra Records to North Carolina's powerhouse Merge. At the same time he moved from Vancouver, BC to the tranquil environs of Montreal. The results were a departure from the previous album's concise statements. This Night delivers a song cycle that is altogether anthemic and symphonic. And while it may not hit you in the gut at first blush, it's a release that grows on you and has stood up to the test of time.

Massive full length from DJ Koze! Amygdala has been garnering rave reviews all over the place, from the most fickle of electronic music sites to the local paper your mom reads. It's definitely going to be topping at least a few best of lists once the end of the year rolls around. Once you have a chance to listen to the tracks you'll know exactly why. Koze has been in the game for nearly 15 years and wherever he's gone he's brought along a sense of warm psychedelia. Whether it's the hip hop of his early days or his minimal techno heyday that element has always been present. The album is being presented as the German producer's Sgt. Pepper's and while that may be an inflated comparison it's a rather fitting one. While Sgt. Pepper's aimed to rebuild rock, Amygdala takes a similar approach to techno, proving that the genre can be fully captivating from end to end. Granted, the majority of the songs feature a softer edge to them than any floor filling techno banger. Koze's creative use of vocalists like Caribou and Matthew Dear add a depth of personality that can be missing from many electronic albums. There's a certain amount of mature restrain present as well. With its subtle take on techno Amygdala is sure to please. Limited edition 2LP pressing, includes 7" with bonus track "Auroville."

Lots of interesting tidbits about this record, but lets start with the music. DUMP is the solo side project from James Mcnew, bass player of Yo La Tengo. For "NYC Tonight," McNew brings back that '79 disco vibe and lays it on a cover of the GG Allin (aka "the most spectacular degenerate in rock & roll history") song of the same name. Quite a feat, but he totally makes it work! The track will easily get itself stuck in your head with it's catchy laidback lyrics, swingy melodies, and subtle-y stomping disco beat. Flip side features a collab remix by Shitaro Sakamoto (ex-Yura-Yura Teikoku) with instrumentals for both. Pressed up in SAM style disco sleeve with free MP3 download. Remastered reissue of Elliott Smith's 1994 debut LP. Roman Candle was recorded on a 4 track recorder in teh basement of Smith's girlfriend, and was initially intended to be a 7" release.  However, once the folks over at Cavity Search Records heard the tracks they knew that they had something special and so they decided to release it in its entirety.  The original sound on the record was pretty lo-fi, but this remastered version has some pretty clear sound, more comparable to the releases that came later in Smith's solo career. I'm sure there's some die hards out there that'll turn their nose up at the cleaner mastering, but if you're an Elliott Smith fan you owe it to yourself to hear this. 9 tracks total on quality 180g vinyl, packaged in a pic sleeve with lyric sheet. BONUS: Each copy of this LP includes a coupon redeemable for a free, high-quality download of the entire album from the Kill Rockstars website.

Pizza! The Fat Boys self titled 1984 debut gets the deluxe reissue treatment! Once a sensation of 1980s culture The Fat Boys were early ambassadors of rap music. Buff Love's beatbox set the tone for their hard beats and hilarious lyrics. Their subject matter ran that gamut from over-eating to comic book characters and girls. With their innate sense of humor they rightfully earned the title The Clown Princes of Rap. It's awesome to see The Fat Boys career given its proper due with this more than appropriate pizza box reissue. Includes Pizza Picture disc vinyl housed in it's very own Pizza Box, 8-1/2" x 11" 20 page booklet and a download card for bonus material and interviews. Recommended for hip hop heads and avid vinyl collectors.

Flying Lotus finally drops his much anticipated and heavily hyped third album on Warp! Cosmogramma raises the bar to outerspace heights and goes above and beyond all expectations from the prolific LA producer with mind expanding cosmic jazz melodies, futuristic beats and bleeps from beyond, and totally organic yet unpredictable arrangements that prove why Flylo is at the top of the class for the new school sound. If Los Angeles was the mission statement, Cosmogramma is the magnum opus - a self-described "space opera" that treats the ears to new possibilites in the sonic realm featuring collaborations with relative Ravi Coltrane, harpist Rebekah Raff, bass virtuoso Thundercat, string arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and vocals from Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Laura Darlington. There is also an undeniable spiritual jazz vibe soaked into the futuristic beat tapestries reminiscent of his aunt Alice Coltrane. This is something that needs to be heard in its entirety for the full effect but here are some picks: Check the opener "Clock Catcher" that sets the mood, "Pickled," the heavy head nod of "Zodiac Shit" and "Recoiled," the abstract funk of "Computer Face / Pure Being," the brilliant "And The World Laughs With You" ft. Thom Yorke, "Arkestry" with its freeform Sun Ra feel, the uplifting "MmmHmmm," future house grooves on "Do The Astral Plane," and with Thundercat, and the groovin' "Dance Of The Pseudo Nymph." 17 tracks total. Following up his brilliant Cosmogramma full length, Flylo drops this impressive EP titled Pattern+Grid World. Like Cosmogramma the tracks here are ambitious, but focused and fully realized, raising the bar once again in the realms of new school beats. This one's a no brainer for old fans and new listeners alike. From the chugging sonic soundscapes of the opener "Clay," to the cosmic jazz D&B workout "Kill Your Co-Workers," the slumpy outerspace funk of "Time Vampires" and "Jurassic Notion/M Theory," and the super accessible "Camera Day" (which first made its appearance as the back beat for Killer Mike's "Swimming"), it's great to see FlyLo is mastering his own style, while still expanding into territories unknown. 7 tracks, includes free MP3 download, recommended.

His influential Brainfeeder label is constantly pushing boundaries with eclectic, forward-thinking releases that shape and mold the scene, while his own work continues to evolve and grow exponentially. Now with Until The Quiet Comes, his fourth full length album, Flying Lotus delivers his most realized and coherent piece to date. Whereas Cosmogramma took us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy and beyond, Until The Quiet Comes brings us back to earth with a very personal and introspective sound rooted in cosmic jazz as much as it is in beats. From the opening notes of "All In," you can already tell you are in for something special. Lush arrangements and free flowing melodies seem to come natural for Flylo with nothing ever seeming rushed or forced ("Until The Colours Come, "Only If You Wanna"). Then come the heavy bump of the beats that work as a perfect counter balance to the mystic jazz vibes ("Until The Quiet Comes," "Getting There," "The Nightcaller," "Tiny Tortures"). Self-titled debut EP from Fugazi. From the ashes of Minor Threat came the influential D.C. punk sound of Fugazi. Heads might also know this one as 7 Songs, but whatever you call it, it straight up rocks hard. Features the ska-infected "Waiting Room" (one of Fugazi's most well-known tracks, as covered by RCHP), the post-hardcore funk of "Suggestion," "Bull Dog Front," "Bad Mouth," "Burning," "Give Me The Cure," and "Glue Man." Comes in full pic sleeve with iconic photography by Glen E. Friedman, just as it was released back in 1988. Also comes with free mp3 download.

Prepare to have your mind officially blown. The much anticipated full length debut from the muthaf'n Gaslamp Killer has landed and it totally exceeds all expectations. Over the years, GLK has grown quite a cult following as a respected DJ and producer. From co-founding the legendary Low End Theory night (where he is still a resident DJ) to touring the globe, his high-energy sets have become the stuff of legend. Now on Breakthrough, Gaslamp Killer takes his heavy, psych-influenced sound to the next level with a fully realized album of devastating beats and bugged-out psychedelia on Flylo's Brainfeeder imprint. Expect an intense trip through dark and ominous sonic territory with some of the heaviest live drum and production work from GLK himself, as well as guest appearances from kindred spirits Gonjasufi, Adrian Younge, Dimlite, Daedelus, Samiyam, Computer Jay, and more. The whole album should be digested in its entirety for the full effect, but check out "Holy Mt. Washington," "Dead Vets," "Flange Face," "Apparitions," "7 Years Of Bad Luck" and "Keep It Simple Stupid" for a taste of the madness. New York street gang turned peace making musicians, The Ghetto Brothers ‘Power Fuerza’ get the proper reissue from Truth & Soul Records. Protecting their block in the Bronx was the m.o., but once a member was murdered their outlook became that of positivity and change in the ghetto. Influenced by The Beatles, Grand Funk Railroad, and Eddie Palmieri’s Harlem River Drive, the GB’s combined the pop sensibilities with Rock, Latin, and Funk grooves. 'Got This Feeling' is a certified jammer for the top rock circles across the world, 'You Say That You're My Friend' goes for the heart felt Lennon songwriting we heard early in The Beatles catalog, and 'Viva Puerto Rico Libre' pays homage to the mother land of Puerto Rico in a Psychedelic Latin Funk explosion. This is as much a part of New York's vibrant musical history as some of the classics, you just didn't know about it til now. Remastered with liner notes from Ego Trip's Chairman Mao. Recommended

After whetting our appetites with "New York Is Killing Me," Jamie xx releases We're New Here, a thirteen-track full-length featuring The XX producer's reinterpretation of Gil-Scott Heron's 2010 album I'm New Here. The aforementioned track (also included here) perfectly fused short snippets of GSH's bluesy vocals with Jamie xx's future bass sensibilities, and pairings of equal quality can be found in tracks like "Home," "My Cloud," and "I'll Take Care Of U," which feature sophisticated beats, lofty, emotive synth work, and thick, heavy low-end work. Also check out "Running," as Heron's spoken word piece rides beautifully over a melodic and dark hip-hop/new school beats-influenced instrumental, or some of the interludes like "Jazz" and "I've Been Me," which are short but nevertheless capture the essence of this project. Recommended.

Gil-Scott Heron is a legend. You might know of him from his revolutionary street poetry of the 70's, his influential spoken word albums, or maybe just heard about the hardships of his life and times in New York City. Anyway you look at it, his words have affected the lives of many, and here he is in the new decade of the new millennium, reaching out to a whole new generation of people with a brand new album. Plenty of artists go to retirement and comeback, but Gil-Scott Heron has really impressed with I'm New Here. His scuffed and often tired voice tells of the hardships he has dealt with over the many years in a soulful bluesy manner - sounding so experienced, yet fresh over the minimalist modern beats and sound-scapes. Can't really pick and choose tracks here - this is the type of album you have to enjoy as a whole, but if you want a couple standalone highlights check out "New York Is Killing Me," "I'll Take Care Of You," or "Me And The Devil." Powerful stuff. Recommended.

One of the more intriguing skulls designs Ive seen over the last few years, wearing a blooming crown and emerging from flames is bordered by a milieu of foreign languages. Now, thinking about the music, Im starting to gather that the confusing image is altogether appropriate. Claire Boucher, Grimes, comes from todays new school of electronic, dream pop a school owing equal parts to Madonna, Bjork, and Aphex Twins ambient works. But just as the mysterious letters that adorn the covers skull, leaving behind the roaring fire, Grimes music is a foreign, fresh take on the aforementioned. Boucher warps and distorts the common conventions of electro and synth pop, weaving them into her own fantasies. Bouncy beats are held up by spacious and soft vocals, often times pitch-shifted and delayed, echoing on throughout. Strange samples flutter around verses, soaked in stereo sound tricks. Its a highly intriguing listen, and not merely for its production but furthermore for its melodies and hooks, its a highly infectious pop record once alls said and done. One both for the home listen (make your daily routine a good touch weirder) and for the clever DJ looking to work in the obscure. Highlights include the sure-classics Genesis, Circumambient, Be a Body, and Nightmusic, all prime for a space stations dance floor, the crowd looking back through the window at how distant other music seems.

Grizzly Bear's music has always been infused with nuance and detail. The quartet has grown from their debut on Ed Droste's home recorded Horn Of Plenty to showcase the talents of all involved. From their haunting vocal harmonies to their multifaceted instrumentation the band creates intricate tapestries infused with baroque melody that beckon the listener in. For their fourth proper album, Shields, Grizzly Bear have shaken off critics' assumptions that they are all flourish and no substance. Songs like the pair of lead-off singles, "Sleeping Ute" and "Yet Again", expose the band's emotional core in a way we have not heard before. At times it feels as if the compositions want to take off in multiple directions at once, but the tend to resolve at just the right moment. Chris Bear's drumming underpins the frantic and ethereal soundscapes created by Chris Taylor, while Droste seems to have a new found grittiness in his vocals. The real standout of Shields though, is Daniel Rossen. His folksy playing has grown to incorporate strands of jazz and prog-rock that add layers of depth to Grizzly Bear's sound. While Shields may be more demanding than Grizzly Bear's past albums it is ultimately stronger and more accomplished than anything that has come before. Homeboy Sandman makes his full length debut on Stones Throw! On First Of A Living Breed, the Queens MC shows and proves with smart, quick witted raps, tight beats, and a grassroots aesthetic that is kind of rare in this day and age. Does his name sound familiar? You might've seen it around as it has been making media rounds recently - from writing about hip-hop on HuffPo, to being praised as an "artist to watch" in Rolling Stone. Though this is his first offering on a major indie like Stones Throw, Homeboy Sandman has actually been around for a minute. After going to law school then dropping out to be a school teacher, HS eventually jumped into the indie circuit back in 2007 with his first album, only to be touted as "sharp lyricist" by XXL the year after. It was around this time I actually first heard of Homeboy Sandman while riding the subway where photocopied postcards with his name on it were all stuck up all over - a real testament to his grassroots rep! Fast forward a few years later and here he is on Stones Throw, perfecting his craft by providing captivating and conscious flows over ill production from the likes of Jonwayne, Oddisee, 2 Hungry Bros, 6th Sense, Oh No, and more. This is what hip hop needs at the moment. 14 tracks, recommended.

Radio pop if Clear Channel didn't exist. The duo formerly known as Teen Inc combine the pop sensibilities of Timbaland, 90's era Prince, and the background music to every sexual fantasy scene from your favorite film. Whispery vocals over staccato half time rhythms with nary a pop diva in sight. Like Frank Ocean and Miguel breathing some much needed life into the genre, INC. touches on the latter, but adds a different depth of warmth. The brothers Aged have worked with producer, songwriters Pharrell and Raphael Saadiq as session players in the past and now their time has come to let us get a glimpse into their world. Recommended.

Unadulterated. First release from the official imprint of the Dilla estate. This single announces the release of an upcoming lost vocal full-length. These two tracks, recorded in early 2000, were produced by Dilla himself and found on 2" tape shortly after his passing in 2006. This first pressing features clear vinyl and the a Jeff Jank / Mason London sleeve with fold-over plastic sleeve (subsequent pressings will be standard). Recommended.
