2007 edition, featuring a new afterword by author Ashley Kahn. Kind Of Blue is the most popular straight-jazz album of all time, the one that even those people who don't really listen to jazz but want to seem smart, hip and cultured...
expand review can connect with. Even 45 years after its initial release in August 1959, it remains the standard-bearer for an entire culture, and continues to sell in the neighborhood of 100,000 copies a year. This book is part of a recent tendency in music-related publishing, the "making of" study of classic albums. No matter how many times you've heard this record, Ashley Kahn's thorough and impassioned excavation of the facts and details regarding its creation, and the context in which it was made, will fascinate and enlighten. Not a mean feat considering that everybody on the record except the drummer is now dead, as well as most of the CBS staffers and engineers who were present at those two historic sessions in March and April of 1959. The book studies each of the five tracks on Kind Of Blue in hair-splitting detail, and also provides an excellent perspective on the jazz and popular-music industries of the day. Rare, never-before-seen pictures that must be seen to be believed seal the deal. 230 pages. -greg caz

I've never seen blogland so geniunely excited about a DVD release. Something about Bad Brains elicits a pure, gutteral response from music nerds and past generation skaters; and plus, no more shoddy bootleg VHS tapes from Bleeker Bobs or Kim's. This official...
expand review DVD captures the best of three Bad Brains perfomances that happened on 3 consecutive days in 1982, beginning on Christmas Eve. Bad Brains live proves to be worth the hype, with the thrash banshee HR singing like the devil's child and incredible intensity from the band. The footage is much better than I expected with multiple angles shot with professional cameras. CBGB's is well lit during the performance, allowing you to see in detail the '83 crowd sans security crew, as they freely wander the stage and go dumb. Awesome. 22 songs plus interviews. -mgmnt

expand review band's logo, its music and its identity, how a band's logo can endear or villify them to fans, and who the hell actually designed some of these things. This book's got it all, from the most forehead-slappingly obvious graphics (the immortal designs of bands like the Stones, Black Flag, Chicago, Motorhead, Yes, etc.) to the great lost/underappreciated logos of our time. The book is divided up by genre - Rock, Hair Bands, Heavy, Extra Heavy, Punk, Alternative, Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, Country, Electronic, Reggae - and each logo has the year of design, record label and designer (where available) listed right underneath. Also includes interviews with Gerard Huerta, T42Design, Invisible Creature, Chris Bilheimer and more. See if you can spot all the dope logos by our 20 Jay neighbors at Morning Breath. expand review We first heard this mutant - half breed - mongoloid a couple years back on a Mad Decent Radio mix, but it's been under wraps since. Wicked wicked drums is all I have to say. "Must Be A Devil(2)" has a spaghetti western feel about it, another one of Diplo's strange concoctions that creeps into your brain. (It's a sort of rework of Pixies' "Hey" with ex-Bonde Do Role frontwoman Marina on vocals.) On the flip we get four remixes of "Wassup Wassup" featuring rising Bmore vocalist Rye Rye. I think DJ Sega(3) takes the honors amongst the big names (Crookers, Bart Bmore), watch for this kid. -the mgmnt

expand review definitely worth a look. CD1 puts a spotlight on the man's lesser-known early years with his first band Koola Lobitos (check the deceptively straightforward "Highlife Time(1)" and "Omuti Tide(2)," about an alcoholic who loses his job to the drink) and the earliest incarnation of Africa 70 ("Swegbi and Pako(3)," "Obe!(4)"). CD2 delves further into the Africa 70 material with essential catalog tunes like "Water No Get Enemy(5)" (from the classic Expensive Shit/He Miss Road LP), "Why Black Man Dey Suffer(6)" and "Roforofo Fight(7)." The third disc is a DVD with the 1984 documentary "Teacher Don't Teach Me No Nonsense," which includes a laidback interview with Fela plus live material taken from his appearance at that year's Glastonbury Festival in England. (Watch for the queens' famed dance routine at the end of the title track.) It all comes housed in a double gatefold digipak with a 12-page booklet that's got detailed liners, some lyrics, a discography and even a foreword by Fela's first daughter, Yeni Kuti.
